Its not often that you hear of a grape stomp taking place in Northeast Tennessee, but Watauga Lake Winery has turned the age old tradition of winemaking in to an event attracting folks from all over the country.

Wayne and Linda Gay opened Watauga Lake Winery in 2012 in the historic Big Dry Run Schoolhouse located in the mountains of Butler, Tenn.  The winery is known for the flavorful combinations of grapes that are produced locally at Villa Nove Vineyards, just a few miles down the road from the winery.  Villa Nove Vineyards (also a popular wedding and event venue) consists of more than 4,000 grapes on 35 acres of land overlooking Watauga Lake. By 2013 and 2014, the winery had already created a name for itself by winning one gold and two silver medals at the Wines of the South Competition. By 2015, Watauga Lake Winery had been awarded nine combined medals from Wines of the South, Mid-Atlantic Southeastern Wine Competition, Asheville Food and Wine Festival and named Best of Tennessee. Fast forward to 2017, and the local winery has received ten more combined honors from Asheville International Wine Festival, Wines of the South and Mid-Atlantic Southeast Wine competitions. Watauga Lake Winery now produces 60,000 pounds from 10 varieties of grapes each year and crafts 16 different wine labels.
