Affrilachia: Live Radio Performance
February 26, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$5The Yarn Exchange is back this month with an episode dedicated to Black History month and stories of “Affrilachia”. Frank X Walker coined the term Affrilachia to describe the unique contributions of African Americans who have contributed to developing the culture of the Appalachian region, and how those contributions have helped shape the entire country. Stories from Jonesborough’s own community members will be featured in the program, as well as other prominent Tennesseans, to include Mary Fields, the first African American woman who became a postmaster on a U.S. Postal Star Route in the old West. She was also known as Stage Coach Mary, as she delivered the mail in her wagon pulled by a mule, and carried a rifle- and knew how to use it– to ward off robbers, who were notorious for stealing U.S. mail during this time. Musical guests will be the popular singing group from Bethel Church, “We Five”.
The program will perform live at the International Storytelling Center on February 26 at 7PM. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by calling 423-753-1010 or online at jonesborough.com/tickets
