All About Seeds Day

The Appalachian Resource Conservation & Development Council (ARCD), in partnership with Utopian Seed Project, will host an “All About Seeds Day” on October 8th at the Appalachian Highland Volunteer & Training Center in Johnson City, TN. The morning session, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will explore Seed Economics for farm operations, covering the value of seed production and considerations for integrating it into a farming business. The evening session, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., will focus on Seed Saving for backyard gardeners, teaching participants how to harvest, store, and preserve seeds for future growing seasons. Participants are invited to come for the morning session or afternoon session or both! As weather patterns, growing conditions, and agricultural challenges continue to evolve, preserving and selecting regionally adapted seed varieties is more important than ever. This workshop will provide practical education for both commercial farmers and home gardeners interested in strengthening local food systems through seed stewardship. Join ARCD and Chris Smith, of Utopian Seed Project for a day of learning about the importance of seed diversity and the role it plays in building resilient farms and gardens across Southern Appalachia. Participants will explore seed varieties well-suited for the future of farming while gaining practical knowledge for their own operations.
