From Reelfoot Lake to Fall Creek Falls to Warriors’ Path and every state park in between, our First Day Hikes are designed for all ages and abilities and are offered at all times of day. Start a New Year tradition with your family today. Tennessee State Parks’ First Hikes are part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes initiative in all 50 states.

David Crockett Birthplace State Park

Limestone, TN
Jan. 1 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
What better way to start the New Year than to take a hike along the beautiful Nolichucky River? Join a ranger for a walk on the Crockett Shoals Overlook Trail and the Homestead Trail. The combined length is 1.85 miles, and will end with hot chocolate to toast in the New Year. Dress warmly!

 

Doe Mountain Recreation Area

Mountain City, TN
Jan. 1 at 2 p.m.
All are invited to join Mayor Taylor at Doe Mountain Recreation Area January 1st at 2 p.m to ring in the New Year with a healthy new habit! Meet at Doe Mountain Recreation Area and enjoy a short hike with friends, neighbors, City & County Officials, and others followed by hot chocolate and cider afterwards! There will be door prizes including Johnson County Farmers Market gift cards and more as well as special activities for the kids! (All fees will be waived once you’ve signed the Doe Mountain Recreation Area waiver.)

 

Panther Creek State Park

Morristown, TN

Join Ranger Mayfield for a Ranger led hike along Point Lookout trail. Point Lookout trail is a moderately difficult 1.9 mile loop with an amazing view overlooking beautiful Cherokee Lake. While on the trail we hope to see many different types of wildlife that is often found around the park. We will be meeting at the first picnic area at the top of the hill as you drive towards the overlook.   Please remember to bring water with you and wear appropriate footwear.

 

Roan Mountain State Park

Roan Mountain, TN
Jan. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon
Roan Mountain is celebrating the New Year with a resolution to hike.  Join Park Ranger Phil Hylen for a beautiful 1.5-mile morning trek up to Ravens Rock.  Ravens Rock offers a beautiful winter overlook of the park and mountain landscape.  Hikers will start and end their adventure at the Campground Picnic Shelter 3 across from the camper check-in station.  There will also be a warm fire to greet participants along with hot chocolate and coffee on the front and tail end of the hike.  This is a free event, but we request that you sign up on this page by clicking the green Register button to help us have a count of our participants.

 

Rocky Fork State Park

Flag Pond, TN
Jan. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Come ring in the New Year at Rocky Fork! We will be leading a “winter expedition” to the Lower Higgins Creek Waterfall, in the Cherokee National Forest. This waterfall is normally frozen into complex and beautiful designs. This is a strenuous 1 mile round-trip hike. Please come dressed for the mountain weather, on a January day can be quite windy and cold!  There are also numerous unbridged creek crossings, none of which are more than one foot deep. Bring enough food, water and warm clothing (and a spare pair of socks)!

 

Sycamore Shoals State Park

Elizabethton, TN
Jan. 1 from 9 to 10 a.m.
Join historic interpreter Chad Bogart for a New Year’s Day visit to the oldest frame house in Tennessee. Built circa 1775, the historic Carter Mansion boasts architectural details which are quite elaborate when compared to most homes on the frontier. Enjoy the beauty of this site and learn about 18th century New Year and 12th Night traditions and superstitions. The event is free, however a reservation is required. The Carter Mansion is located at 1031 Broad Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Tour is subject to cancellation in the event of significantly inclement winter weather.

 

Warriors Path State Park (SOLD OUT)

Kingsport, TN
Jan. 1 from midnight to 2 am.
Start off the New Year right – on a “de-light-full” hike through the night. We’ll light up the midnight trail with old-timey kerosene lanterns, and discover a “new world” at the beginning of a new year. After our night-time discovery hike, we’ll toast the new year with hot cocoa!  This is a moderate 2 mile hike that is open to both adults and children. Note that, for safety, only adults will carry the kerosene lanterns. Children should bring along a small flashlight. Be sure to come dressed for the weather, and to wear sturdy hiking boots.
