Heritage Tourism Information Center Ribbon Cutting
December 6, 2018 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pmFREE
BLOUNTVILLE, TN – Sullivan County will host a special ribbon-cutting and unveiling of a new sign to be installed for the future Heritage Tourism Information Center at Blountville. The event will be held at 4:30 PM on Thursday, December 6, 2018, in downtown historic Blountville at the tourism center located at the corner of Hwy. 394 and the Blountville Bypass.
Formerly the Old Sheriff’s Home, the newly restored Heritage Tourism Information Center is set to officially open in Spring 2019.
The Old Sheriff’s Home is part of the Blountville Historic District and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This 1870s era structure has undergone several phases of preservation efforts using funds awarded from TDOT to the county. The first major improvement was the structural support of the roof trusses and new metal roof. The second phase included repointed the exterior brick work, replacement windows and doors as well as interior structural improvements. The final phase of restoration will leave the building ready for occupancy, including new hardwood flooring throughout, painting, trim, 19th century black and white basket-weave tile and period lighting. The building is unique in that the exterior and interior walls are four-brick thick made from clay on-site.
Originally the building was the home of the county sheriff with a small jail cell on site. Over the years the county used the building for various offices. While the structure has been vacant for more than 20 years, it will come to life serving as the new Heritage Tourism Information Center where visitors may begin a tour of the historic district or obtain information about other sites in Historic Sullivan.
The public is cordially welcome to join us in this special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 PM on Thursday, December 6, 2018, with a tour of the building immediately following the dedication. Historic Blountville Christmas Tree Lighting with the Blountville Middle School Choir will follow at 6 PM in front of the historic Sullivan County Courthouse.
