Holiday Soup and Songs

November 26, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Holiday Soup and Songs: A McKinney Center Fundraiser

Where can you get dinner, a show, and take home a one-of-a-kind, hand-made creation, all while helping a worthwhile cause?  Holiday Soup and Songs- the McKinney Center’s annual fundraiser!

Kick off the Holiday Season on November 26th, 2018 at 6pm at the McKinney Center, 103 Franklin Ave., Jonesborough, with the Jonesborough Yarn Exchange and the Jonesborough Novelty Band in their annual Christmas Caroling Sing-Along.  This year’s show is perfectly seasoned, as audience and cast sing together a collection of favorite Christmas Carols that are sprinkled lightly with holiday stories. All who attend will receive a song book so they may sing along to every holiday tune, including classic standards as well as newer songs borne from the Appalachian region to include “I Wonder as I Wander.” The Yarn Exchange cast will shed light on how some of these carols came to be, while Terry Countermine and the Novelty Band take audiences on a sentimental musical journey.

Before this journey begins, guests will enter the front doors to a dazzling display of one hundred and fifty one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic bowls, all created by more than a dozen different local potters, as well as community volunteers during several “community bowl-making days” held at the McKinney Center. These beautiful bowls, which will be on display prior to the show, are an art exhibit of their own. From hand-built to wheel thrown, and every color glaze imaginable, there is a style and color to fit everyone’s home. Once audience members walk through the display, they get to choose their favorite bowl, and then move on to where the real fun begins.

After choosing their own unique bowl, guests will continue into the banquet hall to encounter an all-you-can-eat home-made soup buffet. Half a dozen different soups will be available, including gluten-free and vegetarian, all prepared by local gourmet cooks. Main Street Café will be providing two of these delicious home-made soups. Guests may try one or all of the different flavors. Also on the menu will be a fresh green salad with vegetables.

The sing-along will begin after dinner, while guests enjoy a cup of coffee from the Corner Cup Coffee Shop and a delicious dessert. From the stories to the bowls to the music to the food, this entire event is locally made. The warm, family atmosphere will let you know that the Christmas Season has indeed begun.

Tickets are only $25, and will support two local entities: The Jonesborough Yarn Exchange Radio Show and the McKinney Center’s outreach program. The Jonesborough Yarn Exchange is dedicated to collecting and sharing Jonesborough’s rich cultural heritage and stories through a monthly radio show presented at the International Storytelling Center and broadcast on local NPR station WETS 89.5 and online at wets.org on HD Channel 1. The McKinney Center is dedicated to providing excellent instruction in the arts to adults and children by the region’s finest artist-teachers. Two great causes are benefitted in one fun event.

Guests may purchase tickets online at bit.ly/soupandsongs or by calling the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center at (423) 753-1010, or by visiting in person. Seating is limited to one hundred and fifty seats for this event, so advance tickets are recommended
