Chuckey Depot Museum at Jonesborough to Open Train Talk Exhibit
June 28, 2018
The Chuckey Depot Museum at Jonesborough has just announced the opening of a new exhibit, Train Talk, which focuses on various communication tools, verbal and non-verbal, utilized by the railroad. The Town of Jonesborough will host the exhibit opening at the museum on Thursday June 28 at 6 p.m. The exhibit will run through January 2019.
The exhibit allows exploration in how railroad technicians communicated during the day, at night, across distances and during challenging weather conditions such as heavy rain, dense fog and snow. The Train Talk exhibit will help museum visitors gain an appreciation for the bells, whistles, flags, lanterns and lights effectively used by the railroad for decades prior to modern electronic communication methods.
The Chuckey Depot Museum’s regular hours are Wednesday through Friday, 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is also taking part in Jonesborough Days Festival and will have extended hours during that time: Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 1, 1 to 8 p.m.
The Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey, TN and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough, where it opened as a museum in October 2017.
Chuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 S 2nd Ave. For more information call 423.791.3869. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society.
