Spoken Word Open Mic
May 8, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Spoken Word Open Mic returns to the Historic Eureka Inn with special guest host, Jimmy Neil Smith, founder of the International Storytelling Center and the National Storytelling Festival. Smith will be joined by co-host and executive producer, David Joe Miller, founder of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild.
This May 8th open mic will be dedicated as “Founders Night” in celebration of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild’s 25th anniversary. Anyone can sign up to tell a ten minute story, recite a ten minute poem or read ten minutes of their written work in front of our live audience. Sign up begins at 6:30pm for the 7pm show at 127 West Main Street in downtown Jonesborough. If the weather permits, the event will be held outdoors in the courtyard, otherwise it will take place in the parlor.
Spoken Word Open Mic originated in Asheville, NC. in early 2015 when Miller began producing storytelling and poetry shows at New Mountain SOL Bar. The audience requested an open mic format where anyone could take the stage, grab the mic and tell a story or recite a poem to a supportive and enthusiastic audience. These spoken word open mic formats have continued almost monthly in both Asheville, NC. and Jonesborough.
The show is best suited for participants and audience ages 16 years or older, due to possible adult content of the stories and poetry. There is never a theme, never any competition and never any censorship. The open mic will continue on the second Wednesday of each month and is always free and sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. David Joe Miller of Asheville.
