Teaberry Road Cleanup
April 27, 2019 @ 12:00 am
VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED FOR TEABERRY ROAD CLEANUP IN ROAN MOUNTAIN! Please share! 🙂
As many of you know, I recently received a phone call from Carter County Commissioner Patty Woodby describing a horrible situation of illegal dumping and dead animals on the right-of-way along Teaberry Road, along with the debris from the dump site rolling downhill on to Mr. Mark Forbes’ property. The county has since properly disposed of the dead animals. An arrest was made on Tuesday, April 16th, of the guilty party associated with the death and dumping of the dogs on Teaberry Road. The remaining trash, however, still needs to be cleaned up!
Commissioner Patty Woodby, Carter County citizen Beverlie Margle, and Keep Carter County Beautiful (KCCB) are organizing and scheduling a community cleanup event of this illegal dump site on Saturday, April 27th, starting at 10 AM. KCCB will provide trash bags, gloves, and other supporting items. County Solid Waste Director, Benny Lyons, will provide a 40 Yard roll-off dumpster. **Seniors in high school can attend. This cleanup event is not suggested for children younger than that.
Location: Participants can access Teaberry Road the intersection of Dark Hollow Road and Hampton Creek Road (directions below). Superintendent of Carter County Schools, Dr. Kevin Ward, has given volunteers attending this cleanup event permission to park across the street from Cloudland High School in the school parking lot.
I would highly recommend to car pool as much as possible because parking on Teaberry Road is very limited to not at all. Volunteers planning to carpool can meet at the parking lot across from Cloudland High School by 9:45am for the commute to Teaberry Road. Drivers will need to stop on Teaberry Road when they come to the large dumpster provided by Carter County Solid Waste Director, Benny Lyons. (In case you’ve never traveled on Teaberry Road, the paved road does turn to a gravel road.) Close-toed shoes or hiking boots should be worn. Work gloves and trash bags, along with several trash grabbers, will be provided by Keep Carter County Beautiful. At least one wheelbarrow will be needed. A safety review will be given to volunteers at the dumpster site at approximately 10:00am. Volunteers will only be collecting trash items from areas easily reached.
Cleanup is anticipated to end around 12:30pm, after which volunteers can commute back to the Roan Mountain Community Park shelter behind the Roan Mountain Post Office to enjoy a meal arranged by Commissioner Hill. Keep Carter County Beautiful will also have giveaway items.
