Tennessee Statehood Day
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Washington County and the Town of Jonesborough will host a special community event celebrating Tennessee Statehood Day on Friday, June 5, at 12 p.m. in front of the Washington County Courthouse in downtown Jonesborough.
Although Tennessee officially observes Statehood Day on June 1, the local celebration on June 5 will commemorate Tennessee becoming the 16th state admitted to the Union in 1796.
The program will begin at noon and feature remarks from Washington County Mayor Joe Grandy and other community leaders highlighting the significance of Tennessee’s history and heritage. Additional remarks on the history and significance of Tennessee Statehood Day will be shared by Judge Kiener, Washington County Historian; Anne G’Fellers-Mason, Program Manager at the McKinney Center; and Paul Harris, Jonesborough Tourism staff member and Heritage Alliance tour guide.
As part of the celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to view the Commemorative Washington County Unite Quilt following the program inside the Courthouse. Created in honor of America’s upcoming 250th birthday, the quilt celebrates the shared history, heritage, and community spirit of Washington Counties across the United States. The quilt will be displayed on the first floor of the courthouse for two weeks before continuing to its next destination as part of the nationwide America 250 commemoration. Representatives from the Washington County Archives will be on site after the program to share the history and significance of the quilt.
Community members are invited to attend this free event and join in celebrating Tennessee’s rich history and heritage in downtown Jonesborough. For more information about the event, visit Jonesboroughtn.org.
