The Earls of Leicester Concert
September 29, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Grammy Award winners The Earls of Leicester presented by Jerry Douglas, will perform on Saturday, September 29th at 7:30 pm at Niswonger Performing Arts Center.
The Earls of Leicester was born out of dobro master Jerry Douglas’ lifelong passion for the music of Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys. The Earls’ mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Flatt and Scruggs, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing their self-titled debut, the Nashville-based band far surpassed their own expectations, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association.
The six-man band includes Douglas plus acclaimed writer, producer, and solo artist Shawn Camp on lead vocals and guitar; renowned banjoist Charlie Cushman; veteran bluegrasser Jeff White on vocals and mandolin; Barry Bales (Douglas’ longtime Union Station bandmate) on vocals and bass; and fiddler extraordinaire, Johnny Warren. The Earls of Leicester have discovered a kind of magic that, when harnessed, allows moments once relegated to memories to roar back to life. Douglas describes his and his bandmates’ hotfooting in vivid detail, from Cushman “creeping up the middle” to Warren’s deep-rooted antics. “Johnny will come swooping in from the side singing the quartet or come around the back and go between the singers to play a solo,” Douglas said. “There’s a lot of choreography employed on stage. Johnny does that because that’s the way his father did it, and that’s the way he’s going to do it.”
The Earls of Leicester will release a live album the day before their concert from the recordings of their two-night run at Country Music Hall of Fame’s CMA Theater. The new album offers up a selection of songs that fully capture the pure joy and supreme musicianship that propel their every performance. The album follows the band’s 2016 release “Rattle & Roar” and their eponymous 2014 album. With “Rattle & Roar”, the Earls conjured up a fresh batch of Flatt and Scruggs songs, delivered with the Earls’ now signature blend of homage, virtuosity and perspective. It is overwhelmingly clear that 21st century listeners can’t get enough of the Earls’ re-creations of songs deep rooted by a pioneering duo more than half a century ago.
