Unicoi: Heritage Day
October 19, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
FREEUnicoi, Tenn. — Visitors will step back in time at the annual Heritage Day Saturday, October 19, from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bogart-Bowman Cabin, located at 5012 Unicoi Dr.
Hosted by the Unicoi History Group and the Town of Unicoi, the event is designed to celebrate
southern Appalachian heritage and give visitors a glimpse into the daily life of settlers during the 1700-1800s.
“This is a special event for us,” said Pat Lynch, president of the Unicoi History Group. “We dress in
period clothing and love showing the children and parents the real roots of where we come from here in the
valley.”
Guests will tour exhibits that demonstrate blacksmith forging, beehive-oven biscuit baking, fire-side
cooking, quilting, basket-weaving, apple-butter cooking, corn shucking and more. Mary the Town Cow will be
welcoming visitors from her pen and sheep will be on display too!
“There is so much to learn in Unicoi,” said History Group member Lesia Willis. “We work hard to share
our heritage and make sure younger generations hear the stories and see the ways in which things were done
before technology took over.”
Heritage Days is open to the public Saturday, but the event is also held Friday for registered school
groups. Classes choose either a morning or afternoon session and are guided through the exhibits for a quick
lesson on each activity.
