Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

MONDAY, MAY 30
7:00 PM WEATHER OR NOT – People have always wondered about the weather,
especially what kind of weather is coming. Come share some old-timey
weather folklore, and some modern-day wisdom to help you guess what
weather to expect. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it
9:00 PM NIGHT SENSES – Nature is full of sights and sounds and scents! Let’s
open our senses to night discovery. Bring your flashlight to the main
bath house to start our walk through the night.
TUESDAY, MAY 31
9:00 AM RIDGETOP HIKE – Enjoy some fine high views of the summer forests
and fields under the bright sunny skies. This is a fairly short, but very
steep hike. So wear good hiking footwear, bring some water, and meet at
the Mountain Bike Trail parking lot.
11:00 AM NATURE ART – You’ll be amazed at how creative you can be with
nature’s own “crayons”. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to create your own
natural masterpiece. If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.
1:30 PM FIELD STUDIES – This green world at our feet is teeming with
amazing life. Let’s get a closer look! Meet at the campfire circle, east end
of the main campground.
3:00 PM TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag
games work. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it
is raining, meet at the main bath house.
5:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest.
Meet at the main bath house for a short, refreshing hike.
7:00 PM NATURE “JEOPARDY” – Let’s try out this natural version of the
famous game show. Test your skills and see how much you REALLY
know about nature. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if
it is raining.
9:00 PM STAR GAZING – There’s a universe waiting to be discovered just above
our heads. Let’s look up and wonder at the stars. Meet at the campfire
circle, east end of the main campground. In case of rain, meet at the pool
entrance for some night sky legends.
NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1
9:30 AM FOREST DISCOVERY HIKE – Be a forest detective! Come explore the web of
connections along the forest trail. Meet at the main bath house.
11:30 AM JUNIOR RANGERS: TRAIL CLEANUP – Make our park a cleaner, healthier
environment! You’ll make a big difference for our earth, and begin to earn your
Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to get dirty!
3:00 PM SOIL CREATURES – Discover the amazing world of life in the ground at our
feet. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to “dig into” a new world.
5:00 PM RIVERBANK STROLL -This green river valley has seen generations of
travelers. This evening, we’ll travel together, and search for signs of the wildlife
and the people who came before us. Meet at the main campground bath house.
7:00 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could be
hiding in it? Come see and try out some of the tools that foresters use to study
and protect our native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if
it is raining.
9:00 PM FOREST TREES – Take a “hike” from the comfort of your seat. Enjoy a “tour”
of our nearby forest habitats using words and pictures. After the slide show,
we’ll share a demonstration of how to identify our local trees. Meet at the Open
Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
THURSDAY, JUNE 2
9:00 AM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places, and get some new
views of our park land. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the start of
an invigorating hike.
11:00 AM ISOPODS – How much do you really know about “roly-poly” bugs? Let’s catch
and learn about these critters, and then have a race to see whose is fastest! Meet
at the main bath house.
3:00 PM INSECT ART – They’re more than just creepy crawlers. Take a closer look –
insects have some amazing colors and patterns! Let’s use insects as “living
models” for our art. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is
6:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and plants
all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to
show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the main bath house if it
9:00 PM PLANTS & POLLINATORS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on native
wildflowers, and the “busy bugs” who help them thrive. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.
FRIDAY, JUNE 3
8:30 AM BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS – Come wake up to our feathered neighbors.
Meet at the main bath house to begin a stroll through bird country! (The first 12
people to come get free doughnut & juice!)
10:00 AM BIKE RIDE TO SHIPLEY CEMETERY -Long years before this was a park, it
was the Shipley family farm. As we visit their family cemetery, and the green
hills beyond, we can get a better feeling for their land and their lives. Pedal on
down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet.
Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!
FRIDAY, JUNE 3, CONTINUED
11:30 PM CRITTER PATHS – Be a critter detective! Find out what’s been wandering
through the campground habitats. Meet at the camp store.
2:00 PM TRAVELING TRADERS – From beads to beans, our ancestors depended on
each other for supplies. Come find out about those who traded goods along the
Great Indian War and Trade Path. Then try trading beads to make bracelets.
We’ll supply the beads, you supply the trading and crafting skills. Meet at the
Open-Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
3:30 PM WASPS & HORNETS – Yes, they do sting if you bother them! But they are
really amazing creatures when you get to know them, from a safe distance…
Let’s get a close, stingless look at these common, important, misunderstood park
critters. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
6:00 PM EARTHBALL GAMES – Let’s have a ball – a six foot tall ball!! Meet at the
Open Air Chapel for some lively, cooperative games. If it rains, we’ll have some
smaller ball games at the main bath house.
7:00 PM POISON IVY – Don’t let fear of a little itch keep you out of the lovely summer
woods! Learn to be safe around this “sneaky” plant. Meet at the Open Air chapel,
or main bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire, and
some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the
main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool
SATURDAY, JUNE 4
Celebrate NATIONAL TRAILS DAY with a day full of trail activities

SUNDAY, JUNE 5
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
