Warrior’s Path: Summer in the Park

Welcome to Warriors’ Path State Park! We hope you will enjoy your visit!
While you are with us, we invite you to take advantage of the rich natural beauty
and wealth of opportunities for enjoyable recreation here at the park.

 

NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.

 

TUESDAY, JUNE 19
11:30 AM PICNIC HIKE – Let’s “feed” our eyes and ears on park scenery, and then
feed ourselves a picnic lunch. Bring your bag lunch to the camp store,
and we’ll carpool.
2:30 PM RECYCLE FOR THE BIRDS – Stop! Don’t throw away that empty milk
carton! Bring it to the Open Air Chapel and we’ll recycle it into a useful
bird feeder. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
4;30 PM BIRD WALK – Our park’s feathered creatures have some fascinating
stories to tell. We’ll use our eyes and ears to help us “listen in”. Meet at
the main bath house to begin a walk through bird country!
7:00 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could
be hiding in it? Come see and try out some of the tools that foresters use
to study and protect our native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or
main bath house if it is raining.
9:00 PM FOREST TREES – Take a “hike” from the comfort of your seat. Enjoy a
“tour” of our nearby forest habitats using words and pictures. After the
slide show, we’ll share a demonstration of how to identify our local trees.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20
9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest.
Meet at the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.
3:00 PM PLANKTON – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for
the micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this
incredible world of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main
bath house, and we’ll stroll on down to the shore.
4:00 PM “WONDERFUL WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kidfriendly
water play and learning activities. Meet at the Open Air Chapel
and be prepared to get VERY WET!
5:30 PM MAKE A STAR WHEEL – Want to learn the names of the stars and
constellations? Want a new view of the night sky? Come to the Open Air
Chapel to make your own guide to the starry heavens. In case of rain,
meet at the pool entrance.
7:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest.
Meet at the main bath house for a short, refreshing hike.
9:00 PM STAR GAZING – There’s a universe waiting to be discovered just above
our heads. Let’s look up and wonder at the stars. Meet at the campfire
circle, east end of the main campground. In case of rain, meet at the pool
entrance for some night sky legends.
THURSDAY, JUNE 21
9:30 AM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places, and get some new
views of our park land. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the start of
an invigorating hike.
1:00 PM NATURE JOBS – People have different jobs, and so do animals and plants. In
fact, every living thing has a job to do! Let’s take a short hike to find out who is
“at work” out there. Meet at the camp store.
3:00 PM WEIRD SCIENCE – Come awaken your inner scientist and observe some weird,
wacky science experiments. No lab needed! Meet at the Open Air Chapel or he
main bathhouse if it’s raining.
5:00 PM MAGNIFYING GLASS STROLL – Use your eyes and some handy little
magnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath
house to begin a short discovery walk.
7:00 PM WEB OF LIFE – Every living thing is part of the web! Help us get really “tied
up” in our work as we build our own living web. You’ll see natural places like
you’ve never seen them before! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house
if it is raining.
9:00 PM NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY – We all love taking pictures – especially on
vacation! And photographs are a perfect way to preserve memories of beautiful
outdoor places. Find out how to use even the simplest camera as a way to
conserve natural memories. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a slide-illustrated
nature photography “lesson.” In case of rain, meet at the pool entrance.
FRIDAY, JUNE 22
9:30 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail! Enjoy
beautiful vistas of the summer fields, as we search for signs of the unique
habitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the
start of a two hour hike.
1:00 PM SPOTLIGHT STROLL – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural
discoveries. Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit walk.
3:00 PM BIKE RIDE TO SHIPLEY CEMETERY -Long years before this was a park, it
was the Shipley family farm. As we visit their family cemetery, and the green
hills beyond, we can get a better feeling for their land and their lives. Pedal on
down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet.
Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!
4:30 PM PREDATOR/PREY – Explore the competition between hunter and hunted.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if is raining.
6:30 PM TRACKING – Find out how to be a “wildlife detective” – how to read the tracks,
dens, and other signs of our fellow creatures. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or
main bath house if it is raining.
9:00 PM NIGHT WALK ON THE GOLF COURSE – It’s a whole different world out
there at night! By day, it’s a busy place full of golf carts and clubs. But at night,
it’s a peaceful field full of wildlife discovery. Tonight is our chance to explore
these rolling grassy hills, during the dark side of the day. Bring a flashlight and
drive to the camp store and we’ll carpool.
SATURDAY, JUNE 23
SPECIAL EVENT TODAY – DRAGONFLY DAY – SEE POSTERS FOR DETAILS
(This is a free event, but pre-registration is required.)
9:30 AM BIRD’S EYE VIEW – Take a hike to the Overlook and look at our world from a
different perspective. Don’t forget your camera! Meet at the camp store, and
we’ll carpool to the trail.
1:00 PM HUMAN KNOT – Do you know your knots? Bring friends and family to tie and
then untie a giant human knot, the more people the better! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel or at the main bath house if it’s raining.
3:00 PM TEA TIME – Enjoy an old-timey favorite – Sassafras tea! We’ll also “brew up”
some memories of the old days along the Warriors’ Path. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel (or main bath house if it is raining.)
5:00 PM LEAVE NO TRACE – We can enjoy the wilderness, and leave the land as
beautiful as it was. Find out how to camp and hike, and leave no signs of your
presence. Meet at the campfire circle, or main bath house if it is raining.
7:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-atheart!
Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural
world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire, and
some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the
main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool
entrance.
SUNDAY, JUNE 24
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
