Warriors Path: Summer in the Park
June 20, 2017 - June 25, 2017

TUESDAY, JUNE 20
12 NOON BIKE HIKE TO THE OVERLOOK -Let’s travel together, on bicycle
and on foot, to search for signs of the people and the wildlife that have
traveled here. Pedal on down to the camper check-in station. Note that
ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under must be
accompanied by an adult!
3:00 PM CRITTER SNACKS – Let’s make a snack for our feathered and furry
friends! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, and you’ll be able to bring back
home your own little “critter feeder.” In case of rain, meet at the main
bath house.
5:00 PM FIELD DAY GAMES – Hula-hoops, bouncy balls, jump ropes, and
Frisbees! Come down to the Open Air Chapel for a fun evening of games!
(In case of rain, meet at the main bath house).
7:00 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could
be hiding in it? Come see and try out some of the tools that foresters use
to study and protect our native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or
main bath house if it is raining.
9:00 PM FOREST TREES – Take a “hike” from the comfort of your seat. Enjoy a
“tour” of our nearby forest habitats using words and pictures. After the
slide show, we’ll share a demonstration of how to identify our local trees.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21
9:30 AM FUN RUN – Interested in becoming a runner? Get started with a brisk
morning jog around Duck Island. All experience levels welcome! Lace up
your running shoes and meet at the camper check-in store
12 NOON BEACH SEARCH – The lakeshore is full of tiny beaches, full of signs of
wildlife and clues to the people who once traveled here. Each wave brings
us new things to find! Meet at the main bath house to begin our natural
“treasure hunt.”
2:00 PM CHALK CRITTERS – What’s at home here? Decorate the park with
sketches of park wildlife “at home” in their habitats. Meet at the main
bath house.
5:00 PM KICKBALL – Come have a kicking good time! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel and we’ll walk on over to the field.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire,
and some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east
end of the main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor
“campfire” at the pool entrance.
THURSDAY, JUNE 22
9:30 AM RIDGELINE HIKE – Come hike the high ridges to get a new view of our park.
Enjoy the ancient forests, the excitement of wildlife activity, and the peace of the
deep green woods. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.
11:00 AM MAGNIFYING GLASS HIKE – Use your eyes and some handy little magnifiers
to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath house to
begin a short discovery walk.
1:00 PM CRITTER PUPPETS – Wish you could take home your own park animal? Well,
you CAN make your very own paper bag critter puppet instead, and even “feed”
him! We’ll bring the supplies, you bring your creativity to the main bath house.
3:00 PM ID THE TREE – “Wood” you like to know what tree you are camping under?
You don’t want to “leaf” the park without finding out! Meet at the main bath
house, and we’ll learn some local trees together.
5:00 PM SPOTLIGHT STROLL – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural
discoveries. Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit hike
7:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-atheart!
Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural
world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE WILDERNESS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated tour of Tennessee’s
wild, scenic places and the special values they hold. After the slide show, well
have a demonstration of how to read wildlife signs. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.
FRIDAY, JUNE 23
9:30 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail! Enjoy
beautiful vistas of the summer fields, as we search for signs of the unique
habitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the
start of a two hour hike.
11:00 AM PARK BIKE TOUR – Want to discover more about Warriors’ Path State Park?
Come along for a bike tour and see what YOUR State Park has to offer! Note
that ALL riders MUST wear a helmet. Children 10 and under must be
accompanied by an adult.
1:00 PM CRITTER PATHS – Be a critter detective! Find out what’s been wandering
through the campground habitats. Meet at the camp store.
3:00 PM HOLSTON BLUFFS RAILROAD TOUR – Our park is tied to history through
the rails! Let’s hike the old RR grade, and hear the stories of these early
railroaders lives. Meet at the benches in the center of the OVERFLOW
CAMPGROUND.
5:00 PM WATERMELON SEEDS – Come enjoy a fresh summer treat and show off your
seed spitting skills. Meet at the main bathhouse for a friendly and delicious
competition!
7:00 PM TGIF EVENING WALK – End the week on a high note with a hike in the
woods. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.
9:00 PM NATURE’S FIREWORKS – Whether we call them fireflies or lightning bugs,we
sure do enjoy seeing how such a little “bug” can light up the night! Tonight we
can enjoy their “light show” and find out more about their amazing lives. Meet at
the campfire circle, east end of the campground. In case of rain, meet at the pool
entrance.
SATURDAY, JUNE 24
SPECIAL EVENT TODAY – DRAGONFLY DAY – SEE POSTERS FOR DETAILS
(This is a free event, but pre-registration is required.)
11:00 AM PACKING FOR THE TRAIL – Not sure what you need for the trail? Come
learn about what you DO and DON’T need to pack for a fun hike. Meet at the
Open Air Chapel (or main bath house if it’s raining).
12 NOON LAKESIDE TRAIL HIKE – Let’s take a shady walk to find animal habitats
along the lake shore. Meet at the Campfire Circle, east end of the campground.
2:00 PM LEAF ART – Explore the artistic side of nature as we make leaf rubbings and
decorate frames for our artwork! Meet at the main bath house. We’ll supply the
materials, you supply the creative fingers.
4:00 PM PARACHUTE GAMES – Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively,
cooperative games with the giant parachute. If it rains, we’ll have some smaller
games at the main bath house.
6:00 PM WATER|WAYS STARTS TODAY! – The Smithsonian Institute is
bringing a traveling exhibit called “Water|Ways” HERE to Warriors’ Path
State Park this summer: From this evening through August 6 you can
enjoy this amazing interactive exhibit at the park’s Recreation Building on
Duck Island.
8:30 PM MEET THE OWL – Meet a real live feathered hunter. Come to the Open Air
Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is raining, meet at the main
bath house.
SUNDAY, JUNE 25
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
