Warrior’s Path: Summer in The Park

Welcome to Warriors’ Path State Park! We hope you will enjoy your visit! While you are with us, we invite you to take advantage of the rich natural beauty and wealth of opportunities for enjoyable recreation here at the park.
NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified
MONDAY, JUNE 4
4:30 PM BIKE RIDE TO THE DUCK ISLAND – Meet at the camp store and
we’ll pedal on down to Duck Island! We’ll have a chance to watch the
ducks, and discover more about their fascinating behavior! Note that
ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under must be
accompanied by an adult!
7:00 PM NATURE JOBS – People have different jobs, and so do animals and
plants. In fact, every living thing has a job to do! Let’s take a short hike
to find out who is “at work” out there. Meet at the camp store.
9:00 PM STORY HOUR – Evening is a perfect time to share a story! After a busy
day enjoying all the excitement of your camping trip, come hear some
great nature stories under a big shade tree! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, (or pool entrance if it is raining.)
TUESDAY, JUNE 5
9:30 AM LAKE HOLLOW HIKE – Let’s enjoy the rich discoveries of land and
water life along the Lake Hollow trail. Meet at the main bath house.
11:00 AM ANIMAL FOODS – Park wildlife can’t go shopping at Walmart or Food
City – but they do need to eat! Come find out more about what our nearby
“critters” are having for lunch. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it is raining.
2:00 PM BUILD A BOAT – Are you ready to sail across ponds and puddles? Meet
at the main bath house to build your own little boat. Bring your creative
fingers!
5:00 PM BOAT RACE – Come to race the boat you made at 2 PM, or come to
cheer on the racers. Meet at the camp store, and we’ll stroll on down.
7:00 PM FIELD SWEEP – This green world at our feet is teeming with amazing
life. Help us “sweep up” some field discoveries. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE SEASONS – Enjoy a tour of all four seasons in the hills of
Tennessee. With words and pictures, we will experience the excitement
of year-round discovery. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if
it is raining.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6
9:30 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.
1:00 PM MAGNIFYING GLASS HIKE – Use your eyes and some handy little magnifiers
to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath house to
begin a short discovery walk.
3:00 PM JUNIOR RANGERS: TRAIL CLEANUP – Make our park a cleaner, healthier
environment! You’ll make a big difference for our earth, and begin to earn your
Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to get dirty!
4:30 PM BEE’S KNEES – Sure bees make delicious honey, but what else do they do?
Find out why bees are so important and what they do for us. We’ll even make
our own little pet bees that won’t sting! Buzz over to the Open Air Chapel or at
the main bath house if it’s raining.
6:30 PM 4-LEGGED FRIENDS HIKE – Let’s get some exercise for ourselves and our
dogs as we go hiking with man’s best friend! Bring along your dog or come to
share the love of other dogs. Note all dogs must be on a leash. Meet at Main
Bath House.
9:00 PM FIREFLY WATCH – Come to watch (and gently catch & release) our glowing
friends! See who is the best “lightning bug wrangler.” Bring a flashlight and
meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the pool entrance.
THURSDAY, JUNE 7
9:30 AM DUCK ISLAND RUN – Let’s get the morning moving! Bring your legs over to
Duck Island for some running and walking.
11:00 AM WONDERFUL WILDFLOWERS WALK – Early summer is a perfect time for
blooming things! Come for a hike among the beautiful wildflowers of the park.
Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.
3:00 PM NATURE “JEOPARDY” – Let’s try out this natural version of the famous game
show. Test your skills and see how much you REALLY know about nature. Meet
at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
5:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest. Meet at
the main bath house for a short, refreshing hike.
7:00 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could be
hiding in it? Come see and try out some of the tools that foresters use to study
and protect our native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if
it is raining.
9:00 PM FOREST TREES – Take a “hike” from the comfort of your seat. Enjoy a “tour”
of our nearby forest habitats using words and pictures. After the slide show,
we’ll share a demonstration of how to identify our local trees. Meet at the Open
Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
FRIDAY, JUNE 8
9:30 AM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places, and get some new
views of our park land. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the start of
an invigorating hike.
1:00 PM SOIL CREATURES – Discover the amazing world of life in the ground at our
feet. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to “dig into” a new world.
3:00 PM BIKE RIDE AND STREAM STOMP – Come explore life in the muddy places.
That cool creek water sure will feel good after a warm bike ride. Pedal on down
to the camp store, and we’ll ride down to the creek. Be sure to wear old clothes
and shoes – we will get wet and muddy! Note that ALL riders MUST wear a
bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!
5:00 PM ULTIMATE FRISBEE – Join us for an extreme game…some might say, the
“ultimate” hobby. Meet at the playground entrance and we’ll head up to the
fields together.
7:00 PM PEOPLE TRACKS – Wildlife leave tracks and signs, and so do we. But we can
choose what kind of signs we leave! Let’s go on a short adventure to find some
helpful and harmful people tracks. We’ll see what great tracks we can leave.
Meet at the camp store.
9:00 PM NIGHT SENSES – Nature is full of sights and sounds and scents! Let’s open our
senses to night discovery. Bring your flashlight to the main bath house to start
our walk through the night.
SATURDAY, JUNE 9
9:30 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail! Enjoy
beautiful vistas of the summer fields, as we search for signs of the unique
habitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the
start of a two hour hike.
6:00 PM EARTHBALL GAMES – Let’s have a ball – a six foot tall ball!! Meet at the
Open Air Chapel for some lively, cooperative games. If it rains, we’ll have some
smaller ball games at the main bath house.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire, and
some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the
main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool
entrance.
SUNDAY, JUNE 10
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
