SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Tennessee Ernie Ford 100th Birthday Celebration - Special Display
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the anniversary of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s 100th birthday\, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum will have several objects\, photographs\, and items of memorabilia on loan from Tennessee Ernie Ford Enterprises and the museum’s collection on display during the entire month of February. This display will supplement the section of the permanent exhibit\, including a short film\, focused on Ford’s life and career. \nFebruary 13\, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s birthday\, and his hometown has come together to celebrate that milestone with a variety of events and activities\, including a musical performance\, a conversation with Ford’s son Buck\, a special church service\, show screenings\, a commemorative stamp\, and birthday cake! \nBorn in Bristol\, Ernest Jennings Ford was known by many names throughout his life: “Ernest” by his mother\, “Ernie” by his relatives\, friends\, and neighbors\, and “The Ol’ Pea-Picker” as a public stage name during the 1950s\, based on his catchphrase “Bless your little pea-pickin’ hearts.” But he was most well known as “Tennessee Ernie Ford” – a tribute to his Tennessee home and heritage. \nFord’s career spanned radio\, recording\, and television\, resulting in three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and numerous other awards and honors\, including a Grammy and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His song “Sixteen Tons” – a particular favorite of fans and music historians – was an unexpected hit on the pop charts in 1955 and a defining moment in his career. With Ford snapping his fingers and a unique clarinet-driven pop arrangement by Ford’s music director\, Jack Fascinato\, “Sixteen Tons” spent ten weeks at number one on the country charts and seven weeks at number one on the pop charts. In an interview in 1990\, Ford noted that this record had sold over twenty million copies\, and in 1998 his version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2015 it was honored by being included in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry.

SUMMARY:Abingdon: Barter Theatre Presents: Morning After Grace
DESCRIPTION:Morning After Grace \nBy Carey Crim \n“A big-hearted romantic comedy that tackles love\, loss\, and second chances.” \nAngus and Abigail fall into each other’s lives after meeting at a funeral in Florida. Not the first place you’d expect to find romance after clocking plenty of miles on the road of life\, but startling surprises come in unpredictable packages. Strangers just the day before\, Abigail thinks she may finally be ready to take another chance on love\, but Angus has a few issues to work through first. Enter neighbor Ollie\, formerly a baseball player for the Detroit Tigers who now enjoys golf and yoga. Nothing is as it seems with this trio and every disclosure reveals a new perspective. This charming and big-hearted comedy takes us on an unexpected journey toward a new lease on life. Just when they think they’ve got it all figured out\, well-traveled people can be rookies when it comes to learning the good stuff. “…a beautiful vignette about life…treated \nwith kindness\, humor\, and lots of love.” FEBRUARY 7 — MARCH 31
