SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Reading Appalachia: Voices From Children’s Literature
DESCRIPTION:Coming February 2019! Reading Appalachia: Voices From Children’s Literature\, a new special exhibit coming to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum! \nWalk through the pages of your favorite storybook in Reading Appalachia: Voices from Children’s Literature\, a groundbreaking exhibit on Appalachian children’s books and stories. \nSporting life-size characters from Appalachian children’s books\, this exhibit looks at the seminal titles from the late 1800s through the modern story of Appalachia – you’ll feel like you’re walking through the pages of a storybook. Children can stand eye-to-eye with characters from Journey Cake Ho\, A Mountain Rose\, When Otter Tricked the Rabbit\, When I Was Young\, and others. \nThe exhibit also includes representative clothes and toys from Appalachia\, music\, and hands-on activities that bring the subject to life for kids of all ages. Children are encouraged to try on masks of storybook characters and find themselves in a story. They can create their own story of childhood set in Appalachia and hear the voice of old-time storyteller Ray Hicks along with some of their favorite authors and illustrators. Each panel includes an interpretation of the text from a child’s perspective. \nAll are invited to walk into the pages of a story of childhood in Appalachia! \nReading Appalachia was organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Knox County Public Library; it is made possible through the generous support of Clayton Homes\, the Jane L. Pettway Foundation\, Friends of the Knox County Public Library\, and the University of Tennessee’s Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature. \nThe exhibit will be on display in the museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery from February 1 to June 30\, 2019. It will be complemented by a variety of engaging public programs and can serve as a wonderful educational resource for school groups and educators.

A Tennessee State Museum curator-led talk about the exhibit will be open to the public on the evening of Thursday\, February 21.
