DESCRIPTION:2022 PICK ALONG SUMMER CAMP\nREGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the Birthplace of Country Music Museum’s Pick Along Summer Camp\, students will learn foundational skills from expert instructors on the same style of acoustic instruments played on the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings – banjo\, guitar\, or fiddle. Campers also get to explore the museum\, learn about the music of Bristol and our region\, receive instruction in singing and dancing\, and work on projects with WBCM Radio Bristol while also making new friends! Students are given the opportunity to hone their skills as budding musicians while busking in Historic Downtown Bristol and will give a final performance for their grown-ups at the museum at the end of camp week. \nPick Along Summer Camp is designed for students aged 8-16. You’ll make a big difference for our earth\, and\nbegin to earn your Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house.\nBe prepared to get dirty! \n6:00 PM CHARCOAL ART – With a few artistic tools\, and a bit of drawing skill\,\nyou can create a beautiful picture of what our park was\, and is\, and will\nbe. Meet at the main bath house to create a park masterpiece! \n8:30 PM NIGHT SENSES – Nature is full of sights and sounds and scents! Let’s\nopen our senses to night discovery. Bring your flashlight to the main bath\nhouse to start our walk through the night. \nTUESDAY\, JUNE 21\n9:30 AM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places\, and get\nsome new views of our park land. Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll\ncarpool to the start of an invigorating hike. \n11:00 AM BIKE RIDE TO SHIPLEY CEMETERY – Years before this was a park\,\nit was the Shipley family farm. As we visit their family cemetery\, and the\ngreen hills beyond\, we can get a better feeling for their land and their\nlives. Pedal on down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear\na bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!\n1:00 PM SEED ART – Come discover all the things you can create from tree \nseeds! Meet at the main bath house for some “crafty” fun. \n3:00 PM BOAT FLOAT – Are you ready to sail across ponds and puddles? Meet at\nthe main bath house to build your own bark boat. Then we’ll stroll on\ndown to the shore and watch them set sail. \n5:00 PM TENNESSEE SYMBOLS “JEOPARDY” – Let’s try out this natural\nversion of the famous game show. Test your skills and see how much you\nREALLY know about our state. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main\nbath house if it is raining. \n6:00 PM MEET THE OWL – Meet a real live feathered hunter. Come to the Open\nAir Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is raining\, meet at\nthe main bath house. \n9:00 PM LAMP-LIT NIGHT HIKE – Take a “de-light-full” hike through the\nnight. We’ll light up the trail with old-timey kerosene lanterns\, and\ndiscover a “new world” of life after dark. We’ll supply the lanterns\, but\nchildren should bring flashlights instead for safety. Meet at the park’s Mt\nBike Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman Rd\, Blountville TN)\nNOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground\, unless otherwise specified. \nWEDNESDAY\, JUNE 22\n9:00 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail! Enjoy\nbeautiful vistas of the summer fields\, as we search for signs of the unique\nhabitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll caravan to the\nstart of a two hour hike. \n11:00 AM NATURE TRAVELERS – How do trees\, plants and animals “hitch a ride” to \nnew places? Let’s go along for the ride! Meet at the main bath house. \n1:30 PM MEET THE SNAKES – They’re not the fearsome creatures you’ve been led to\nbelieve! Come out and learn the facts about these interesting and helpful\nanimals. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (At the main bath house if it’s raining).\n3:00 PM MAGNIFYING GLASS WALK – Use your eyes and some handy little \nmagnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath\nhouse to begin a short discovery walk. \n4:30 PM TREE COOKIES – Let’s read a small slice of nature! The inside of a tree holds\nmany clues to the outside of the land! Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath\nhouse if it is raining. \n6:00 PM OPEN FIELDS – Green summer fields are full of living stories. Come explore \nlife in Tennessee grasslands. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. \n9:00 PM SPIDERS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated journey through spider country. Get a close\nlook at these amazing creatures\, from the comfort of your seat. Meet at the Open\nAir Chapel\, or pool entrance if it’s raining. \nTHURSDAY\, JUNE 23\n9:30 AM WAKE UP LAKE SHORE – It’s wake-up time on the Lake Shore Trail! Meet at \nthe main bathhouse for a refreshing morning stroll. \n11:00 AM LIFE UNDER LOGS – Every corner of this earth is a home – and rotten logs are\nsome of the best! Help us “dig into” this unique habitat. Meet at the main bath\nhouse\, and be ready to get your hands dirty. \n1:00 PM THE CITY THAT ALMOST WASN’T – A SMALL corner of our park played a\nBIG role in the story of Kingsport old & new Come for a short hike to read this\npathway of history. Meet at the Camp Store. \n3:00 PM PAPER MAKING – Here’s a great way to recycle\, and create your own hand-\nmade paper. Meet at the main bath house. \n5:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest. Meet at \nthe main bath house for a short\, refreshing hike. \n6:00 PM WEATHER OR NOT – People have always wondered about the weather\,\nespecially what kind of weather is coming. Come share some old-timey weather\nfolklore\, and some modern-day wisdom to help you guess what weather to\nexpect. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it is raining.\n7:30 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could be\nhiding in it? Come see and try out some of the tools that foresters use to study\nand protect our native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if\nit is raining. \n9:00 PM FOREST TREES – Take a “hike” from the comfort of your seat. Enjoy a “tour”\nof our nearby forest habitats using words and pictures. After the slide show\,\nwe’ll share a demonstration of how to identify our local trees. Meet at the Open\nAir Chapel\, or pool entrance if it is raining. \nFRIDAY\, JUNE 24\n9:00 AM HIKE TO CHILDRESS TOWN – A vigorous hike over the high ridges will\nbring us to the ruins of the first settlement in the park. This will be a three to\nfour hour hike\, so wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Drive to the\ncamp store\, and we’ll carpool to the start of the trail. \n11:00 AM TURTLE TALK – Meet some real\, live “shelled friends” and find out more about\ntheir amazing lives. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it is\nraining. \n1:00 PM GRAND-DADDY WHO? – Granddaddy Long Legs may be creepy crawlers\, but\nthey are also an important part of the forest community. Come take a short hike\nto search for our little grand-daddies\, and to discover more about these\nmisunderstood leggy neighbors. Meet at the camp store. \n2:00 PM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore\nthe cool\, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the\ncamp store\, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet! \n6:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the\nearly settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main\nbath house if it’s raining. \n7:00 PM TRADITIONAL BASKETS – We use bags to carry our goods from the store\, but\nour Appalachian ancestors used baskets! Take a peek at some old-time baskets\,\nthen make your own basket to keep! We’ll make ours out of invasive\nhoneysuckle\, so we can help clear the forest of some non-native plant pests\, and\nmake some great little baskets at the same time. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\,\nor main bath house if it’s raining. \n9:00 PM TENNESSEE TALL TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we\nshare some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool\nentrance if it is raining. \nSATURDAY\, JUNE 25\n9:30 AM RIVERBANK STROLL -This green river valley has seen generations of\ntravelers. This morning\, we’ll travel together\, and search for signs of the wildlife\nand the people who came before us. Meet at the main campground bath house.\n11:00 AM TRAVELING TRADERS – From beads to beans\, our ancestors depended on\neach other for supplies. Come find out about those who traded goods along the\nGreat Indian War and Trade Path. Then try trading beads to make bracelets.\nWe’ll supply the beads\, you supply the trading and crafting skills. Meet at the\nOpen-Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it’s raining. \n2:00 PM BIKE HIKE TO HOLSTON BLUFFS -Enjoy the peaceful morning\, the\ninviting roads\, and some hidden corners of our park. Pedal on down to the camp\nstore. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under\nmust be accompanied by an adult! \n4:00 PM MICRO-PARKS – Here’s your chance to plan and share your own nature park.\nYou might even get “paid” by your “customers”! Bring your best park managing\nskills to the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it is raining. \nSATURDAY\, CONTINUED\n6:00 PM FOLK MEDICINE – How did folks deal with their ills before there were\npharmacies or doctors? Our Appalachian region is rich in tradition\, including the\ntradition of folk medicine. Perhaps you know some traditional medicines or\nhealing methods passed on to you. We would love to listen and learn! Children\ncome to listen\, and adults come to share your family traditions. Meet at the\nOpen Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it’s raining. \n8:00 PM SUNSET HIKE – Watch the sun go down across the green hills. This is a short\,\nbut rather steep hike. Bring a flashlight for the walk back down. Meet at the\npark’s Mountain Bike Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman Rd\, Blountville\nTN). \nSUNDAY\, JUNE 26\n9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open\nAir Chapel\, or at the pool entrance if it is raining.
