SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Watauga Valley Railroad Dining Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Watauga Valley Railroad Museum will host a special dining experience on restored vintage railroad dining cars on Saturday\, June 25 at 5 p.m.\, 5:45 p.m.\, 7 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. at the Watauga Valley Historic Railroad yard. \n\nThe nostalgia of a bygone era will be relieved in these beautifully decorated railroad dining cars.  The Watauga Valley Railroad Museum will provide a unique opportunity for fine dining and entertainment on the restored Clinchfield 100 and Moultrie dining cars. \n  \nThe highlight of the evening will be a dinner followed by storytelling by an authentic Railroad Storyteller.  Guests will be greeted by railroad songs by the band called the Trunk Monkeys. \n\nTickets are $56 each per setting. Please specify time and menu option when purchasing tickets. All tickets must be purchased in advance of the event\, and there are no refunds. Diners may choose a table for two or four. Tickets are available by calling the Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423.753.1010 or visiting Jonesborough.com/tickets. \n  \nDue to limited parking at the rail yard in Jonesborough\, all patrons will park at the Jonesborough Senior Center at 307 E Main Street and will be shuttled a short distance to the dining cars at no extra cost. The dining cars will be in the rail yard on static display and will not move. \n\nPlease note that both vintage heritage passenger cars were built before the American with Disabilities Act. Due to their historic significance and age\, they are exempt from ADA Compliance requirements. Please consider suitability when ordering tickets. \n\nThis event is a fundraiser for the Chuckey Depot Museum in Historic Jonesborough. \n\nThe Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum (WVRHS&M)\, the town of Jonesborough\, Tn. and the Heritage Alliance have partnered to preserve the former Southern Railway train depot from Chuckey\, Tn. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 for its historic architectural significance. Built by Southern Railway in 1906\, the depot had been privately leased since 1959\, but was situated on land owned by Southern successor Norfolk Southern\, who notified the building’s owners of its plans to demolish the historic structure because the lease had expired. The owners of the building gifted it to the town of Jonesborough\, and it was moved from Chuckey to Jonesborough. It now serves as a museum. Although the railroad is still prominent in Jonesborough\, the town’s depot was razed in the 1970s. \n  \n### \nAbout the Chuckey Depot Museum: The mission of the Chuckey Depot Museum focuses on regional railroads in its exhibits\, like the Southern\, Clinchfield\, and East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. This exhibit gives the Museum a chance to showcase items that come from all over the country\, including a map of railroads in Ohio and a stock certificate for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. The Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, Tennessee\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. The Chuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 South 2nd Avenue. For more information\, please call 423.753.1010. The Depot’s regular hours are Thursday-Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society. \n\nAbout the Town of Jonesborough: A unique 18th century town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee\, Jonesborough’s natural beauty\, charming architecture\, and storytelling heritage have attracted visitors worldwide. Stay a day\, a week or forever\, and create your own stories in beautiful Historic Jonesborough. Visit www.jonesborough.com for more information.

SUMMARY:High On A Hillside Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:JOHNSON CITY\, TN – The first annual High On A Hillside will take place June 25th\, 2022 at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in\nJohnson City\, TN. The event seeks to embrace and celebrate the musical heritage of the region while showcasing\nmodern\, progressive music\, and providing a fun\, family friendly opportunity to showcase local food vendors\, and\ncraftsmen and women. \nThe 2022 High On A Hillside will feature three musical acts playing six full sets totaling nearly 8 hours of live music.\nHeadliners will include The Brothers Comatose and Kitchen Dwellers\, with special guests Urban Soil. The Brothers\nComatose forge their own path with raucous West Coast renderings of traditional bluegrass\, country and rock ‘n’ roll\nmusic. The five-piece string band is anything but a traditional acoustic outfit with their fierce musicianship and rowdy\,\nrock concert-like shows. The Brothers Comatose is comprised of brothers Ben Morrison (guitar\, vocals) and Alex Morrison\n(banjo\, vocals)\, Steve Height (bass\, vocals)\, Philip Brezina (violin)\, and Greg Fleischut (mandolin). When they’re not\nheadlining The Fillmore for a sold-out show or appearing at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, the band is out on the road\nperforming across America\, Canada\, Australia\, and hosting their very own music festival\, Comatopia\, in the Sierra\nfoothills. \nKitchen Dwellers twist bluegrass\, folk\, and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories\, rich mythology\, American\nwest wanderlust\, and psychedelic hues. The Montana quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin]\, Torrin Daniels [banjo]\, Joe Funk\n[upright bass]\, and Max Davies [acoustic guitar]—have captivated audiences at hallowed venues such as Red Rocks\nAmphitheatre and performed alongside everyone from Railroad Earth and Twiddle to The Infamous String Dusters in\naddition to playing festivals such as Northwest String Summit\, WinterWonderGrass\, and more. \nHailing from North Carolina\, Urban Soil weaves Americana\, rock and soul into their explosive live shows and polished\nrecordings. Their studio albums reflect the uncompromising energy that Urban Soil consistently delivers live\, and are a\nstimulating representation of the band’s skillful-yet–visceral sound. Urban Soil has the unique ability of capturing the\nenergy of their live shows and translating it to their studio recordings\, resulting in an electrifying experience with every\nlisten. \nAccording to Courtney Andrews\, one of the festival’s directors\, “High On A Hillside is a celebration of the musical heritage\nof this region. Where it all started and where it is going. We plan to bring the best up and coming artists in the\nprogressive bluegrass\, folk\, rock and country sphere\, right here to Johnson City. As the event grows\, attendees will enjoy\neven larger acts. This city was integral in the creation of bluegrass and country music. We deserve a marquee music\nevent celebrating that contribution\, and High On A Hillside aims to be that event”. \nThe event is family friendly and will feature local craft vendors\, amazing food trucks\, craft beer and seltzer from\nTennessee Hills Brewstillery\, events and activities for everyone. Event staff have partnered with Highlands Axe Company\nas well as Tri Cities Social Sports who will set up free play areas for giant jenga\, cornhole\, and more. They will also be\nhosting a free cornhole tournament where teams can win great prizes. A family flag football game will also take place.\nDetails and sign up information will be posted on the event website soon. \nHigh On A Hillside takes place June 25\, 2022 at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City\, TN. Gates open at 2:00 PM and\nthe music will start at 3:00 PM. Tickets are on sale now at www.highonahillside.com .
