SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Meet at the camp store \n9:00 PM SPIDER EYES- Meet at the Open Air Chapel and bring a flashlight as\nwe hunt for the deadliest hunter on eight legs\, SPIDERS! Will you be\nable to spot a spider in the dark? Bring water. Children under 10 must\nbring a parent.\nTUESDAY\, JUNE 6\n9:00 AM OH DEER! – Discover more about some of the biggest wildlife in the\npark. Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path\, the Whitetail\nLoop. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike\, so be sure to wear\ncomfortable clothes\, good hiking shoes\, and bring some drinking water.\nMeet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman\nRoad\, Blountville TN). \n10:30 AM LAKE SHORE ROUNDUP – We can help wildlife\, and clean up their\nhome at the same time! If they could talk\, the critters would say\n“THANK YOU!!” Meet at the main bath house. \n1:00 PM TRASH TO TREASURE – Here’s a new way to recycle! We can take\nthe junk that makes our park look ugly\, and create our own “animals”.\nPick up some trash on your way to the main bath house. \n2:30 PM NEVER-ENDING CIRCLE WALK – Nature is the “master recycler.”\nLet’s discover some of nature’s endless cycles. Meet at the Campfire\nCircle on the east end of the campground. \n4:00 PM THE THREE R’S – Do you know the Three R’s? For the serious painter as well as the beginner\,\nthis is the chance to artistically re-create our natural surroundings. Feel free to\nbring your own supplies if you have them! Meet at the Open Air Chapel (main\nbath house if it’s raining). \n1:00 PM HABITATS AROUND US – Let’s look for clues to who is “at home” near our\nhomes. Come join us for a short habitats stroll. Meet at the camp store. \n9:00 PM LONG-LOST SPECIES – A surprising number of animals and plants have\nfaded away\, and are now only part of Tennessee’s history. Come discover the\nbittersweet story of extinction in our region. Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on\nsome “ghosts from the past\,” at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool entrance if it is\nraining.\nTHURSDAY\, JUNE 8\n9:00 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of\nnature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the\nwoodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll caravan to\nthe start of the trail. \n11:00 AM LIFE UNDER LOGS – Every corner of this earth is a home – and rotten logs are\nsome of the best! Help us “dig into” this unique habitat. Meet at the main bath\nhouse\, and be ready to get your hands dirty. \n12 NOON LEAF ART – Explore the artistic side of nature as we make leaf rubbings and\ndecorate frames for our artwork! Meet at the main bath house. We’ll supply the\nmaterials\, you supply the creative fingers. \n2:00 PM WALK ON THE SUNNY SIDE – Warm summer sunshine feels great\, but too\nmuch can be a “real pain!” Find out how plants and animals use the sun\, and\nkeep from being burned. Come spend several hours in one of the most\nbeautiful and wildest parts of the park. Be sure to wear good walking shoes\,\ncomfortable clothes\, and bring some drinking water. Meet at the park’s\nMountain Bike Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman Road\, Blountville TN)\n10:00 AM PLANT DEFENSES – They don’t look too stressed\, but even plants have their\ntroubles! Find out how our green neighbors deal with the troubles of life. Meet at\nthe Open Air Chapel to begin our short walk. \n11:30 AM DANDELION DINING – Come enjoy a picnic lunch with us as we discover the\namazing uses of Dandelion\, and even enjoy some free Dandelion Tea! Discover how energy cycles through all living things on Earth\, and how\nthose that are gone still contribute to the environment.
