SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool entrance if raining\, to\nimmerse yourself in the world of the Virginia Opossum. \nTUESDAY AUGUST 1\n9:00 AM HIKE THE “WAHOO” TRAIL – Enjoy about 4 miles of strenuous hiking\nalong an awesome trail! Come spend several hours in a beautiful and wild\npart of the park. Be sure to wear good walking shoes\, comfortable clothes\,\nand bring some drinking water. Meet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking\narea (at the end of Freeman Road\, Blountville TN). \n9:30 AM “FUZZ\, PRICKLES & BUMPS” – Let’s use our sense of TOUCH to\nexplore the forest. Meet at the camp store to begin our “touch & feel” hike.\n12 NOON PARK CRITTER SUNCATCHERS- It’s high summer here in the park\nand the sun shines all day. Come catch some of the bright summer sun\nwith a colorful park animal decoration. Meet us at the Main Bathhouse.\n2:00 PM LEAVE NO TRACE – We can enjoy the wilderness\, and leave the land as\nbeautiful as it was. Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll carpool to\nthe start of the trail. \n9:30 AM LAKESIDE HIKE – Let’s enjoy a peaceful morning hike and find some different \nhabitats along the Lakes trails. Meet at the main bath house. \n11:00 AM FINGER PAINT FROGS – Come discover all about the importance of our\nparks frogs while creating your own froggy masterpiece! Meet at the Boundless\nPlayground. \n12 NOON CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore\nthe cool\, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Duration 30 minutes. \n12:30 p.m. “Cemetery Symbolism” – Death and mourning practices differ across customs and\ntime periods\, but many aspects have carried over into current tradition. Join Andrea Price as she\ndiscusses funerary and mourning practices common in the 18th century while searching for\nsymbols in the Carter Family Cemetery. Meet at the Carter Mansion. Duration: 30 minutes.\n2:30 p.m. “Finger Weaving” – Finger weaving is a technique that has been used by Native\nAmerican groups for thousands of years. Join Andrea Price as she travels down the park’s half-mile loop\nwalking trail and hear about the events that make Sycamore Shoals so special. Duration: 1\nhour\n2:30 p.m. “Frontier Barbie: The Making of Colonial Dolls” – From corn husks to\nelectronics\, children’s toys have evolved in the last 250 years. Join Andrea Price as she discusses\nthe tradition of making dolls out of corn husks and participate in making one yourself! Meet in\nthe park visitor’s center. Duration: 30 minutes. \n3:00 p.m. “Carpentry of the Federal Period” –Humans have utilized wood to create various\nkinds of objects and shelters since the dawn of time. Duration 30 minutes. \nFriday\, August 4 th\n10:00 a.m. “Hat Making” –Headwear has always been an area for those on the cutting edge\nof fashion trends to modify and make their own. Duration 30 minutes. \n12:30 p.m. “Creek Crawl” – Cool off from the summer heat at Sycamore Shoals! Join Andrea\nPrice as she guides a crawl into a creek off the Watauga River in order to check the water’s\nquality\, identify important species\, and beat the heat. Please bring a towel as well as clothing and\nfootwear you would not mind getting wet. Meet at the park visitor’s center. Duration: 1 hour.\n2:30 p.m. “Colonial Kid Games” – Ready to play like a frontiersman? Join Andrea Price as\nshe takes part in the games children would have played growing up at Fort Watauga.
