DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center has curated its Halloween Haunts and Happenings exhibition\, highlighting artwork by thirty-two regional artists that is meant to give you the creeps! Brought together by the McKinney Center staff\, this group of artists from across the region spans a range of practices\, including woodwork\, sculpture\, painting\, photography\, digital media\, and more. Their interpretive expressions reflect the mood of the season. \nArtists in the exhibition include: Amythyst Willis\, Anna Koetter\, Annabelle Trivette\, Becca Burns\, Brooke Roberts\, Caitlin Lovin\, Carol Ann Henderson\, Christopher Paul\, Dan Skalicky\, Danielle Byington\, Dawn Fernandez\, Derek Murrell\, Emily Cooper\, Haley Hansen\, Jarrod Stone\, Jean G’Fellers\, Jessica Villier\, Jimmy Arbaugh\, Jodi French-Burr\, John McKitrick\, Joyce Cirarello\, Kara Bledsoe\, Leanne Trivett\, Leigh Bowman\, Martha Blaser\, Meghan Ortiz\, Michelle O’Patrick-Ollis\, Ryan Rushour\, Skye Lee\, Skye McFarland\, Stephanie Grindstaff\, Summer Buchanan\, and Wayne Lawrence. \nThe exhibition is just one highlight of Jonesborough’s range of Halloween fun\, including the Halloween Trivia at the McKinney Center on October 24\, from 6 to 8 p.m.\, StoryTown Radio Show at the McKinney Center on October 27\, 7 p.m.\, the downtown Halloween Haunts and Happenings event on October 31\, from 6 to 9 p.m.\, and Brews and Boos on October 25. In order to do so\, just give us a call at 423-460-1295 between the hours of 8 a.m and 4:30 p.m\, any day of the week! Or give us a visit in person and we’ll sign ya right up \n\n\nThere will only be 16 hikers permitted for the lantern walk\, must be 12 years of age or older. This is a two mile hike! DESCRIPTION:Tis the season for haints\, spirits\, and haunted trivia night. The scream team of the McSpooky Center and the Scare-itage Alliance are back again for Halloween Trivia Night. Join us on October 24 for a frighteningly fun Halloween Trivia contest with questions to test your knowledge of all things ghostly\, strange\, macabre\, and historical! \nThe festivities will take place on Friday\, October 24\, at 7 p.m. at the McKinney Center with Halloween-themed trivia questions\, friendly competition\, a costume contest and a ton of fun! Not a “history buff?” No reason to fear! These questions cover a wide range of topics and categories and include something for everyone. Main Street Café will be set up to sell a terrifying assortment of beers\, and this year\, you can place a dinner order with The Opossum’s Tale pub on Fox Street. You can call The Opossum’s Tale at 423.788.6782 and place an order by 5 p.m. on game day. They’ll bring your order up to the McKinney Center by 6:30 p.m.\, how frightfully delicious. \nIt’s only $8.00 per person to play. (Admission price does not include beer or food.) Tickets are available online at Jonesborough.com/tickets. Solo play is allowed. Teams are encouraged\, but the person limit per team is 8 people.
