SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Nancy\, an original\, award-winning historical play
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge Builders of Kingsport\, in partnership with the Heritage Alliance\, will present Nancy\, an original\, award-winning historical play by Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, on Thursday\, February 26\, at 6:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Church\, 301 Carver Street\, Kingsport. A panel discussion will follow the performance. \n  \nNancy explores the untold story of an enslaved woman owned by abolitionist Elihu Embree\, founder of The Emancipator\, the nation’s first newspaper devoted solely to ending slavery. While Embree’s life is well documented\, the play asks audiences to consider Nancy’s thoughts\, emotions\, and fate during a pivotal year in her life. Set between January 1820\, when Embree wrote his will\, and January 1821\, when it was read before the Washington County Court\, the play draws heavily from documents housed in the Washington County Archives. Embree attempted to free Nancy and her five children in his will—but whether those wishes were honored remains uncertain. \n  \nThe role of Nancy will be performed by Taleah D. Rogers\, M.Ed.\, a Johnson City native\, Science Hill High School graduate\, and 25-year veteran educator. Rogers is active in numerous community organizations and previously appeared in the McKinney Center’s 2023 production of Crowns. \n  \nWritten specifically for the Heritage Alliance\, Nancy has received an Award of Excellence from the Tennessee Association of Museums and an Award for History in the Media from the East Tennessee Historical Society \n  \nDonations from this performance will support the history education and preservation missions of the Heritage Alliance of Kingsport and Jonesborough. \n  \nFor more information about the Heritage Alliance\, visit www.heritageall.org. \n  \n#### \n  \nAbout the Heritage Alliance: The Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences.
