DESCRIPTION:ARC&D Announces Summer Workshops We are pleased to announce ARC&D’s Summer Workshop Series. Join ARC&D this summer for our Summer Field School! \nThe Field School is open to new and beginning farmers\, experienced farmers looking to acquire new skills\, and anyone interested in learning more about our food system. This summer\, we will be offering eight workshops on topics including soil health\, rotational grazing\, medicinal herbs\, niche markets\, disaster preparedness\, and more. Most workshops will take place on Thursday evenings. \nOur full two-day Disaster Preparedness Workshop will take place on Thursday and Friday\, September 17th and 18th\, in Greeneville. To kick off the Summer Field School season\, we will host an ARC&D Farmer Training Video Launch Party at the Jackson Theater in Jonesborough on Tuesday\, April 28th\, at 5:30 pm. Join us for this free event to view the Introduction to the Video Series and learn about farmers in Northeast TN. We will also host a panel of farmers featured in the video after the screening\, and pastries from Slowbird Bread will be available for purchase\, along with refreshments from the Jackson Theater. \nWe will also start the field school season with a Kick-Off Potluck on Sunday\, May 17th\, at Grand Oak Farm in Jonesborough. This potluck is open to everyone\, Field School alumni\, and anyone interested in learning more about the program and our food system. Farmland Soil Reclamation Workshops will be taking place on Tuesday mornings in May. Each workshop will include a site walk and a comprehensive review of farmland soil reclamation amendments\, methodology\, and recommendations for Helene-disturbed soils. \nThese workshops are made possible in partnership with the UT Extension Institute of Agriculture. This workshop is made possible thanks to funding from the Tennessee Governor’s Response and Recovery Fund. Its puzzles abound: the balds lie below climatic tree line\, yet\nare treeless. They are dominated by native grasses and other southern Appalachian flora\, yet are also home to rare\nplants whose main range is in the far north. Do the balds of Roan Mountain constitute a natural biological\ncommunity\, or do they somehow owe their existence to humans…or both? Are these balds unique\, or are there other\necological versions of the balds out there\, and if so what do they teach us? Her undergraduate studies on songbird behavior at\nAppalachian State University solidified her interest in avian research. After graduating\, she traveled the US\nand abroad to work on various conservation and research projects. Now\, Adrianna is thrilled to be back home\nin Southern Appalachia where she is a master’s student in Wildlife and Fish Biology at Clemson University.\nShe is studying the effects of Hurricane Helene disturbance on nesting birds in western North Carolina. DESCRIPTION:The Sorghum Festival will allow visitors to have the opportunity to observe sorghum cane being processed into molasses using a mule-powered mill. During the morning hours\, Maggie the mule will be out turning the cast iron rollers squeezing out the delectable juices to be boiled down into molasses. Just to watch Maggie work is worth a visit to the site! Come early as the sorghum crew will be crushing the sorghum cane and boiling the sweet juices throughout the morning and into the early afternoon hours.\nThe sorghum breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. will feature biscuits with gravy or sorghum\, sausage\, bacon\, eggs\, oatmeal\, grits\, and drinks. Here is the chance to try sorghum molasses on a biscuit! Visitors can also enjoy touring the historic structures of the property that will take you back to the 1800s. Local bluegrass and folk music will be played within the nineteenth century barn throughout the day. The historic cave will be open for everybody of all ages to explore and find their inner spelunker. Local food trucks will be on site for visitors to enjoy a picnic lunch. There will also be several local vendors selling homemade crafts.\nAdmission is $10 for adults and $5 for children with breakfast. Without breakfast admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children.
