SUMMARY:Kingsport’s Bicentennial Celebration at Netherland Inn
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport’s Bicentennial Celebration at Netherland Inn \nKingsport’s Bicentennial celebration will take place at the Netherland Inn on Saturday\, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nThe celebration is free and open to the public and will include re-enactors and storytellers\, craft demonstrations\, live music\, a mock charter signing and historical documents on display. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the Inn’s grounds and take a photograph with an authentic stagecoach. \nKingsport celebrated its centennial in 2017 and now\, just five years later\, will celebrate its bicentennial. How is this possible? \nIt’s because Kingsport had two charters – the first one on August 21\, 1822 and the second one on March\, 2 1917. \nTwo-hundred years ago the Tennessee General Assembly passed an act to incorporate the town of Kingsport to include all of the lots from the east end of Ross’ Bridge to the fork of Reedy Creek Road. The charter was then amended in 1825 to expand the city limits west on West Sullivan Street and Fort Robinson Drive to the North Fork of the Holston River and downstream to the Rotherwood Bridge. \nThis town\, commonly referred to as “Old Kingsport” to local students of history\, is the area along the Holston River in the vicinity of Netherland Inn – the site where signatures were collected to petition for the original charter. \nKingsport lost its original charter in 1879 and was unincorporated until 1917\, when the second charter was granted. Until 1963\, the boundaries of new Kingsport did not include the Netherland Inn Road area. \nFor more information about the Netherland Inn and Kingsport’s Bicentennial Celebration\, visit thenetherlandinn.com or https://bit.ly/3PdqWsF. \nAbout the City of Kingsport \nFounded in 1917\, the City of Kingsport (pop. 55\,400) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern U.S. The city is widely known as a planned community\, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3\,650-acre park\, nature preserve\, planetarium and observatory. Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.”

SUMMARY:Exchange Place: 50th Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Autumn is generally the most picturesque of seasons\, but this year the color gold will be predominant at Exchange Place\, as Kingsport’s Living History Farm holds its 50 th Fall Folk Arts Festival on Saturday\, September 24\, from 10 am until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 25\, from noon until 5 pm. This celebration of pioneer arts and crafts\, and the harvest season\, will feature artisans demonstrating and selling a wide variety of traditional folk arts\, along with autumn plants\, produce and unique seasonal items. Admission is $5 for ages 12 and over\, with those under the age of 12 admitted free. As always\, proceeds go towards the care of the farm’s animals\, and the continuing restoration and preservation of the site\, located at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Completely unique this year will be a Silent Auction featuring one or more baskets made especially by master weaver Joy Smith\, with a base painted by Ron Russum\, to commemorate this special golden milestone. And back by popular demand\, Jennifer Hanlon will be offering a needle felting beginners class on Sunday\, from noon until approximately 3 pm\, with an emphasis on – what else? – a pumpkin. The fee of $65 includes all supplies and instruction\, plus admission to the festival. A minimum of three (3) people are needed to register (adults only\, please\, as the dry-felting needles are sharp!). Advance registration is required at www.hanlonscreativecorner.com; payment will be collected at the workshop. The Overmountain Weavers Guild will be demonstrating weaving and spinning at several locations\, and selling some of their handwoven and handspun items. As an added treat\, the Burow Museum will be open\, with a unique exhibit in the South Room. There you will find samples and variations woven by members from the 72 drafts which came in a box with the very first loom bought for Exchange Place. They will also be weaving one of Suzanne Burow’s favorite drafts in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Overmountain Weavers Guild. The North Room will feature yarns dyed with plants from the forests\, fields\, and gardens of Appalachia\, and two restored rocker beater looms in action! These unique looms were donated to Exchange Place by Phyllis Dean\, whose Master’s Thesis documents rocker beater looms in the area; we are hopeful that she will be able to stop by sometime over the weekend. In addition to the weavers\, the historic farmstead will be filled with a great range of craftspeople\, including woodworkers\, potters and leather workers\, plus experts in soap-making\, photography\, hand-crafted greeting cards\, chair caning\, and hand-paintings on slate. Boy Scouts will be continuing the rope tradition began by Allen Calcote about 20 years ago. Artists and other vendors that have been at the Fall Festivals for the many years will be featured guests. The Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will be cooking at the Cook’s Cabin\, making sweet potato biscuits and hoecakes to go along with fresh sorghum\, as well as a few other dishes featuring the fall harvest. In addition\, the Junior Apprentices will be active throughout the farmstead\, displaying the variety of chores and activities typical of 19th-century farm life\, such as splitting wood\, tending to the garden and the animals\, working in the blacksmith forge\, and playing games. They will also be demonstrating gourd crafting outside of the Cook’s Cabin. And the Tri-State Basketry Guild\, with a long history of teaching basketmaking to children during Exchange Place’s spring and fall events\, will be setting up shop in the Schoolhouse. A minimal fee is charged for their classes\, with proceeds going to help feed the farmstead’s resident animals. About that sorghum: the cane\, planted earlier this year\, will be harvested in a special area located behind the blacksmith’s shop. This very time-consuming task\, which can be observed on Saturday\, September 24\, will include a hard-working mule named Maggie\, making her very first appearance at Exchange Place. With the milling and cooking completed\, Sunday’s activities will consist of educational explanations about the mill\, the cane\, and the process of making sorghum\, as well as opportunities to visit the cane patch and compare sorghum cane with sugar cane to learn about the differences up close. (Please note that what we produce is for demonstration purposes only\, but we will be offering for sale some 100% pure sorghum syrup\, made fresh this year by the Guenther family of Muddy Pond\, TN.) Children’s Chores\, Crafts and Play will be scattered around the farmstead\, allowing the young (along with those youthful in mind and spirit!) a chance to experience what it was like to be a child in the 19th Century. It will also include the opportunity to wander over to our 1851 barn and meet some of those animals who live here all year long\, including Jenny\, our very vocal donkey\, plus our cow and horse. Sheep\, chickens\, and pigs also call Exchange Place their home and might be seen throughout the weekend. And all of this will feature a backdrop of excellent live music\, provided by local and regional artists. (A tentative schedule\, always subject to last-minute changes\, is listed at the bottom of this release.) And the official countdown to Witches Wynd traditionally begins with the Fall Folk Arts Festival. Exchange Place’s unique storytelling adventure will be offered live again this year (after two years as an online-only experience)\, and tickets will be going on sale during the Festival. The dates for Witches Wynd are Friday\, October 21 and Saturday\, October 22\, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Historically\, this unique blend of macabre tales and ballads sells out quickly since only a limited number of spaces are available\, so we encourage people to purchase them during the Fall Festival. Tickets are $10 apiece and will be found at the Museum Store. Volunteers are always needed\, and greatly appreciated! If anyone is interested in helping out\, or would like more information\, please call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, write to epfestivals.gf@gmail.com\, or visit our website at https://www.exchangeplace.info. Exchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of mid- nineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit organization maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and is supported by donations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants. — 30 – MUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 24 10:00 – 11:00 am KINGSPORT COMMUNITY BAND 11:00 am – noon STRING BREAK noon – 1:00 pm CHRIS LONG 1:00 – 2:00 pm RENAISSANCE STRINGS 2:00 – 3:00 pm STATE STREET STRING BAND 3:30 – 4:00 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND 4:00 – 5:00 pm STRAWBERRY JAM MUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 25 1:00 – 2:00 pm JIM ANN COUNTRY 2:00 – 3:00 pm THE FLYING J’S 3:30 – 4:00 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND 4:00 – 5:00 pm RICHARD PHILLIPS

Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” \n

SUMMARY:Christmas in the Country
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – The “most wonderful time of the year” gets its formal kickoff when Exchange Place\nhosts its annual Christmas in the Country celebration on Saturday\, December 3\, from 10:00 am\nuntil 4:00 pm at Kingsport’s tradition-rich Living History Farm\, located at 4812 Orebank Road.\nThis is the final public event of the year scheduled at the historic site\, which is proudly listed\non the National Register of Historic Places. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children\nunder 12. \nFresh greenery and trees and other holiday decorations will\, as always\, be a major feature of this\nfestival. Mountain City’s Vickie Price will be offering her wreaths and roping\, made with a wide variety\nof freshly-cut greenery\, as she has been doing for more than twenty years. Unique folk arts and crafts\,\ncreated by more than two dozen talented area and regional vendors in our area — such as hand-\ncrafted wood items\, handmade baskets\, pottery\, handmade greeting cards and jewelry — will be on\ndisplay and for sale. Everyone’s taste buds will be tempted with baked goods\, granolas\, and a variety\nof other foods that will be available to eat on site or to take home for gifts or for your own enjoyment.\nAnd master clock mechanic Rod Groenewold will be on hand with some of his collection of historic\ntimepieces for sale\, along with an antique Seth Thomas clock\, which Rod is offering in a silent auction\nto the highest bidder\, with the proceeds benefiting Exchange Place. \nChristmas in the Country furthers a mission of Exchange Place by demonstrating a slice of 1850s\nwintertime farm life in our region\, and showing how our ancestors would have set up for the holidays.\nFor the past year\, the reconstructed hearth kitchen has been closed as it underwent a major renovation\nby historic contractor Mike Faust and volunteer Heather Gilreath\, who replaced many decimated logs\,\nleveled the building\, expanded the porches\, and made other improvements. Now\, amidst great\nanticipation\, the kitchen will be open again for Christmas in the Country! In the newly\nrestored space\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will prepare foods that the Gaines and\nPreston families might have enjoyed during the Christmas season\, such as salsify fritters\, cinnamon\nwaffles\, and ginger cakes. In addition to making these treats\, the Junior Apprentices will be\ndemonstrating 19th-century children’s Christmas crafts in the School House\, trimming a tabletop tree in\nthe Gathering Room\, doing more cooking in the Cook’s Cabin\, and festooning the Yule Log. They will\nalso be performing chores like chopping wood and assisting in the blacksmith shop\, where the skills\nthat were needed to make hardware and tools for the farm\, fix wagon wheels and\, of course\, shoe the\nhorses\, will be demonstrated throughout the day. The Junior Apprentices will also have a craft booth\,\nwhere they will offer for sale a number of handmade and historically-inspired goods\, including tulip\npoplar bark baskets\, hand-forged knives\, "Aunt El’s" pincushions\, and tin cookie cutters. And around\nthe farmstead\, children — or just the young at heart! — will have other opportunities to assist with\nwintertime activities\, such as candle-dipping\, decorating the traditional tree for the birds\, and visiting\nwith the animals who live at Exchange Place year-round. \nThe Overmountain Weavers will be on the porch at Roseland\, demonstrating weaving and spinning\,\nand sharing their handspun and handwoven items for sale. The Burow Museum will be open with\ndemonstrations of weaving on the restored rocker beater looms\, and visitors can try weaving one of\nSuzanne Burow's antique draft patterns on a smaller table loom. This will be the last chance for visitors \nto view the current exhibit of antique drafts and colorful skeins hand-dyed from garden flowers and\nherbs before the display is taken down for winter safekeeping. \nThe Museum Store always offers handcrafted items\, and this year includes a new book by long-time\nvolunteer Billee Moore\, a perfect stocking stuffer. When visiting the store\, you will find something\nextra-special featured on the front porch: the first introduction of a doll that will be unique to\nExchange Place and ready for sale in the Spring. Visitors are encouraged to come up with the\nhistoric name and offer changes to the design. This is a follow-up to a doll created by several\nExchange Place volunteers decades ago; a history of this and other “ol' timey dolls” will be on display.\nA Kissing Ball workshop will take place from 1 to 2 pm. Using boxwood and other natural greenery\,\nparticipants will make a kissing ball to take home. The $10 fee includes all supplies and instruction\,\nplus admission to the festival. Space is limited\, so to register\, email\nexchangeplace.edu@gmail.com\, or call 423-288-6071. \nA very important part of this Christmas in the Country will be a remembrance of Dennis Marshall. A\nMaster Gardener\, frequent volunteer at Exchange Place and a long-time member of the Southern\nAppalachian Plant Society (SAPS)\, Dennis passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. In his memory\,\nwe are planning to plant a small grove of American Chestnut Trees and are inviting people to donate to\nthe cause of helping to restore this once-mighty hardwood. \nCapping off the day will be the traditional Yule Log Ceremony\, which will begin around 4:15 pm.\nOriginated by the Vikings\, it served as a way for them to honor their gods and request good luck in the\ncoming year. It spread to harvest festivals in Germany and Scandinavia\, then moved to England\, and\neventually was brought to the New World by the Pilgrims. The Yule Log is a Christmas in the Country\ntradition at Exchange Place\, a symbol of peace and good will for our wonderful community. Since it\nwas often decorated with evergreens and sometimes sprinkled with grain or cider before it was finally\nlit\, we encourage everyone to at least bring a twig and to wear fine\, colorful headgear to the event.\nWe will be singing several traditional carols\, and conclude the day with a cup of hot wassail\, which\nhelps us to emphasize the spirit of health and friendship. \nFor more information\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, write to\nepfestivals.gf@gmail.com\, or visit our website at https://www.exchangeplace.info. \nExchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of mid-\nnineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit organization\nmaintained and operated by volunteers and is supported by donations\, fundraisers\, memberships and\ngrants.
