The Festival was conceived and is carried out by the Roan Mountain Citizens Club as a two-day celebration to memorialize and perpetuate one of the most gorgeous displays of natural beauty on the North American continent.\nOriginally\, the nature inspired event was held at the top of Roan Mountain. This year’s Festival features handmade crafts\, food\, and a variety of traditional music\, plus an array of old-time folkway demonstrations.\nThe Wow Factor\nVisiting the world’s largest natural rhododendron gardens atop 6\,000-ft Roan Mountain is worth the trip\, but you’ll also hike the Appalachian Trail as it runs along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. Visitors can also connect with nature as they relax beside cool streams that run through the numerous hiking trails within the park. You may even decide to make a full weekend out of the Festival by camping at Roan Mountain State Park or stay in one of their rustic cabins.\nWhat to Expect\nThe Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday\, June 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Browse more than 100 local arts and crafts vendors\, listen to mountain musicand sample a variety of  tasty food. The Citizens Club will also feature Roan Mountain cookbooks\, merchandise and official tee-shirts A Mini-Auction for Scholarships for Cloudland High School Graduates will be conducted between music performances.\nLocation\nRoan Mountain State Park\, Hwy 143\, Roan Mountain\, Tennessee (Between Asheville\, NC\, and Johnson City\, TN on US HWY 19-E\, and only 40 miles from Boone/Blowing Rock\, NC\, and 20 miles from Banner Elk/Beech Mountain/Linville\, NC) Also\, the Appalachian Trail\, as well as an official Tennessee Scenic Route runs through the area.\nParking\nParking by donation to local civic group\, admission\, demonstrations\, and entertainment all day both days.\nInformation\nRoan Mountain Citizens Club – www.roanmountain.com or email rhododendronfestival@yahoo.com\nRoan Mountain State Park – www.tnstateparks.com/parks/about/roan-mountain\nElizabethton/Carter County Tourism – www.tourcartercounty.com or call (423) 547-3850\nLodging\nRoan Mountain State Park – www.tnstateparks.com/parks/cabins/roan-mountain\nElizabethton/Carter County Tourism – www.tourcartercounty.com/lodging/index.html or call (423) 547-3850\n

SUMMARY:Burow Museum Opening
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – A journey of more than two hundred years has come to an end.\nOn Sunday\, June 25\, 2017\, the Exchange Place living history farm will officially open the Burow Museum\, with the Commissioning Ceremony scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.\nBack in the late 1790s\, Revolutionary War veteran Ambrose Gaines built a log cabin on his property (along present-day Stone Drive)\, and subsequently built a second cabin close by. They were later incorporated side by side into a larger house with added bedrooms\, dining room and kitchen. Henceforth\, it was known as the Gaines-Anderson House. In 1950\, it was moved farther back on the property to make way for the construction of Stone Drive.\nOwnership continued to pass down among family descendants until the 1980s\, when Katherine Anderson Boyd inherited the property and eventually deeded it to the Bancroft Gospel Ministries. It served as living quarters for the Bancroft Bible Camp staff for decades until it was decided to demolish the house and sell the property.\nBecause of their connection with the John Gaines family\, the cabins were offered to Exchange Place\, and the gift was gratefully accepted. Mike Faust\, an expert in historic restoration\, was tapped to move the logs and construct the long-awaited museum with funds accumulated primarily through the tireless efforts of volunteers Suzanne Burow and her late husband\, Richard. Fittingly\, it now bears their name.\nThe Burow Museum will add to the ability of the historic site to tell the story of Exchange Place and the life of settlers prior to the Civil War.\nThe event\, open to the public\, will include live music provided by the exciting young local group\, Tennessee Border\, and free refreshments provided through the generosity of the Kingsport Convention and Visitors Bureau. Following the 2:00 pm festivities\, the farmstead will be open for tours until 4:30 pm.\nExchange Place is a non-profit\, volunteer-run living history farm\, a member of the non-profit Netherland Inn- Exchange Place Association. It is an educational facility and regional attraction that seeks to preserve\, protect\, interpret\, and manage the history\, heritage\, and artifacts pertaining to mid-19th century farm life in Northeast Tennessee.\nFor more information\, please call 423-288-6071\, or visit our website at www.exchangeplace.info.\n

The Main Stage welcomes the return of a few familiar faces to the Jonesborough Days activities\, The Beach Nite Band. Formally known as the Collegians\, the Beach Nite Band combines a summer feel to popular R&B\, soul\, disco blues\, classic pop and boogie music guaranteed to appeal to all ages.  Known for their “Carolina Beach Music\,” they offer a wide variety of music styles for dancing and listening\, along with comedic showmanship from the group’s four members. From Castlewood\, VA the band originally formed in 2013 and recently reunited for a resurgence of great music and good times. 49 Winchester’s sound takes the poetic lyrics of singer/guitarist Isaac Gibson & combines acoustic traditional instruments with modern day influences to create an energetic and melodic blend of high energy folk rock. Then from 8-10 p.m.\, we welcome Southern Accents- A Tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to the Main Stage. Assembled from an entire team of talented ace-musicians from the Nashville studio & touring circuit\, Southern Accents recreates the music\, style & sound of Tom Petty professionally with immaculate precision and wildly contagious enthusiasm. From their uncanny resemblance to the original band and the way they move onstage to the note-for-note\, stunning recreations of Petty’s music from throughout his entire catalog – Southern Accents showcase the best of the best of his songs. Then stick around as the festival wraps up with the annual fireworks show starting at 10 p.m.\nJonesborough Days Annual Fireworks Show \nOne of the most anticipated aspects of the annual Jonesborough Days Festival is the fireworks show.  Now in its 47th year\, the Festival will host the fireworks show on Sunday\, July 2 at 10 p.m. The show is expected to be seen throughout most of Jonesborough\, as the fireworks will be assembled and projected from the Library parking lot which is in between downtown and 11-E.\nFestival goers are expected to witness a large number of the fireworks along portions of Highway 11-E and throughout downtown Jonesborough. “The annual fireworks show has become a tradition for many and this location works well to accommodate the crowds in the downtown area as well as along 11-E” said Melinda Copp\, Main Street Director.\nThe Main Stage will feature music from the regional band 49 Winchester as well as Nashville natives Southern Accents- A Tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers just prior to the fireworks display. SUMMARY:Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals
DESCRIPTION:39th season of Liberty! to open Thursday\, July 13th!\nContact: Jennifer Bauer\, Park Manager423-543-5808\nThe cast of Liberty! the Saga of Sycamore Shoals invites you to join them for their 39th year of presenting the Official Outdoor Drama of the State of Tennessee. Each year\, the Fort Watauga amphitheater comes to life with the sights and sounds of the late 18th century on the colonial frontier.\nNationally significant events that helped to shape the future of our nation before\, during\, and after the American Revolution are presented in an engaging\, exciting\, and entertaining fashion.\nThe Watauga Association\, formed in 1772\, was widely recognized as the first continental government that was “free and independent” of the British Crown. This designation was recognized by no less than President Theodore Roosevelt. It was designed by leaders to provide for law and order and the right of every free man to vote. Later\, the area was annexed by North Carolina and became known as the Washington District\, named in honor of General George Washington\, who was leading the fight for American Independence at the time.\nIn 1775\, The Transylvania Purchase took place at the Watauga “Old Fields” where Judge Richard Henderson and other land speculators purchased 20 million acres of land from the Cherokee. This negotiation sparked a series of Cherokee attacks on the pioneers of the Watauga and surrounding settlements a year later.\nLiberty! is set in front of the full-scale replica of Fort Watauga\, which was used to defend the settlement against attacks from a faction of the Cherokee\, led by Chief Dragging Canoe\, who opposed the sale. Ultimately\, the settlement was successful in staving off the attack and siege of the fort.\nSycamore Shoals also served as the gathering place for the Overmountain Men\, who were an essential part of a broader militia that defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his British force at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. That event is often noted as a major turning point for the American Revolution.\nLiberty! tells the stories of these important days of American history as well as demonstrating the life of pioneers in a frontier settlement. Moreover\, it gives faces to the names we see on many of our street signs and other local area designations. For example\, we meet John Sevier\, who went on to become the first Governor of Tennessee. We are also introduced to John Carter\, and his son Landon\, both of whom are reflected in the full name of the Carter Mansion\, the oldest frame house in the state. It’s preserved by the Park and the associated Friends of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park.\nThe amazing strength and skills of the local pioneer women are far from neglected in the drama. Another character is Mary Patton\, who learned the art of manufacturing gun powder from her father. Her assistance was crucial in the defense of the settlement during the siege. Moreover\, she supplied the Overmountain Men with a minimum of 500 pounds of gunpowder for their foray into North Carolina.\nWe also encounter Catherine “Bonnie Kate” Sherrill\, a lively lass who was caught outside the fort during the siege attack\, and was rescued by Sevier\, whom she later married. While Tiptonville was the original name of Elizabethton\, as part of the State of Franklin\, it was later renamed for Landon’s wife\, Elizabeth MacLin Carter\, who also appears in the drama.\nThis is only a partial list of fascinating local contributors to regional and national history\, and putting the play on is quite an undertaking. It features professional lighting and sound\, a well-maintained amphitheater\, as well as an all-volunteer cast of nearly 100 local actors in speaking and extra roles.\nLiberty runs Thursdays-Saturdays\, July 13 – 15\, 20 – 22\, and 27 – 29\, 2017 in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN (use 1651 West Elk Avenue for GPS purposes). And\, all of this is provided to local residents and area visitors at a most reasonable price.\nGeneral admission tickets range from Free for Children 5 and under; to $6.00 for Students 6 to 17 years; $11.00 for Seniors 55 and up; and $14.00 for Adults. Members of Friends of Sycamore Shoals may attend the drama any night for a reduced adult/senior admission price of $7.00.\nTickets can also be purchased online at www.TheLibertyDrama.com or at the door.\nFirst Night tickets to the opening show on Thursday\, July 13th are only $9 for adults and seniors. This year\, our 1st Responders Night is celebrated on opening night. All 1st Responders and a guest will be admitted for Free on Thursday\, July 13th.\nVeterans Night is on Thursday\, July 20th\, where Veterans are formally thanked for their service during the show\, and also with free admission for them and a guest.\nYou are also invited to visit and ‘like’ their Facebook pages at:\nwww.facebook.com/LibertyTheSaga/ www.facebook.com/FriendsOfSycamoreShoalsStateHistoricArea/\nwww.facebook.com/sycamoreshoals\nLikewise\, everyone is encouraged to become a member of the Friends of Sycamore Shoals group to help support the Liberty drama\, as well as a host of other educational park activities that take place throughout the year.\nDon’t be one of the many who say “I’ve heard about it\, but never gone.” And\, if you’ve seen it\, you’re most welcome to come again. This year we present a new script that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seats! Support your local history educators and preservationists; come learn about our history in a fun and entertaining context\, and spread the word. We’ll see you at the Old Fields!\nAdditional Information:\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park\n1651 W. Elk Avenue\nElizabethton\, TN 37643\n423-543-5808

SUMMARY:Kingsport Maker Faire
DESCRIPTION:Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating\, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters\, Maker Faire is a venue for these “makers” to show hobbies\, experiments\, projects. \nWe call it the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth – a family-friendly showcase of invention\, creativity\, and resourcefulness. \nGlimpse the future and get inspired! \n\nMaker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly festival of invention\, creativity and resourcefulness\, and a celebration of the Maker movement. \n\nPart science fair\, part county fair\, and part something entirely new\, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts\, crafters\, educators\, tinkerers\, hobbyists\, engineers\, science clubs\, authors\, artists\, students\, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.\nThe launch of Maker Faire in the Bay Area in 2006 demonstrated the popularity of making and interest among legions of aspiring makers to participate in hands-on activities and learn new skills at the event. A record 215\,000 people attended the two flagship Maker Faires in the Bay Area and New York in 2014\, with 44% of attendees first timers at the Bay Area event\, and 61% in New York. A family-friendly event\, 50% attend the event with children. Also in 2014\, 119 independently-produced Mini and 14 Featured Maker Faires occurred around the world\, including Tokyo\, Rome\, Detroit\, Oslo and Shenzhen.\nMaker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking\, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies. But it’s not just for the novel in technical fields; Maker Faire features innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science\, engineering\, art\, performance and craft.\nMaker Faire is a gathering of fascinating\, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. It’s a venue for makers to show examples of their work and interact with others about it. Many makers say they have no other place to share what they do. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) is often invisible in our communities\, taking place in shops\, garages and on kitchen tables. It’s typically out of the spotlight of traditional art or science or craft events. Maker Faire makes visible these projects and ideas that we don’t encounter every day.\nMaker Faire is brought to you by Maker Media.  Maker Media publishes Make: magazine\, produces Maker Faire\, and offers DIY electronics\, tools\, kits\, and books through its online and pop-up Maker Shed stores.
