SUMMARY:Summer in Warriors' Path State Park
DESCRIPTION:Warriors’ Path State Park hopes you are enjoying this great summer season\, and that you’ll be joining soon for our award-winning “Summer In The Park” activities. Below is the schedule for June 29 through July 4th. During that week\, you and your family can hike by lantern light and daylight\, plant future meadows\, read wildlife signs\, explore wetlands\, and much more. And it’s all FREE! \nTUESDAY\, JUNE 29 \n10:30 AM LAKESIDE HIKE – Let’s enjoy a peaceful morning hike and find some different habitats along the lakeside trails. Meet at the main bath house. 1:00 PM BEE’S KNEES – Sure bees make delicious honey\, but what else do they do? Find out why bees are so important and what they do for us. We’ll even make our own little pet bees that won’t sting! Buzz over to the Open Air Chapel or at the main bath house if it’s raining. \n3:30 PM MEET YOUR FEATHERED NEIGHBORS – Learn how to use a field guide to get to know the common birds of the park. Meet at the Open Air Chapel (main bath house if it is raining). 5:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind\, water\, and animals carry seeds of new trees and plants all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the main bath house if it rains. \n7:00 PM SKULLS – NATURE’S TOOL BOX – Every animal carries along with all the tools it needs for survival! Come investigate some natural “toolboxes\,” and find out more about each animal’s job! Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it is raining. \n9:00 PM TENNESSEE WILDERNESS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated tour of Tennessee’s wild\, scenic places. After the tour\, we’ll have a demonstration (with the help of a small native animal) of how to read wildlife signs. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool entrance if it’s raining. \nWEDNESDAY\, JUNE 30 \n9:30 AM MORNING BIRD WALK – Wake up and smell the worms! Come for a nice morning walk around the campground and greet the day with our feathered friends! Bring binoculars if you have them (we’ll have a few extras). Meet at the Camp Store. \n1:00 PM MAGNIFYING GLASS STROLL – Use your eyes and some handy little magnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. The early settlers wore some of them! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to try your hand at using the same natural materials as they did\, for dyeing cloth. In case of rain\, meet at the main bath house. NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground unless otherwise specified. \n7:00 PM PESKY PLANTS WALK – Some plants and trees just don’t fit in. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it is raining. \n9:00 PM LAMP-LIT NIGHT HIKE – Take a “de-light-full” hike through the nighttime forest. We’ll light up the trail with old-timey kerosene lanterns\, and discover a “new world” of life after dark. We’ll supply the lanterns\, but children should bring flashlights instead for safety. Meet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking lot. Be sure to wear good hiking footwear. \nFRIDAY\, JULY 2 \n 9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest. Meet at the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk. \n11:30 AM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore the cool\, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of an amazing life. Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet! \n12:30 PM CRITTER COUNT HIKE – Park woodlands are amazing rich habitats. Come along on a short hike to count who is at home in the forest. Bring along your best wildlife watching skills\, and meet at the main bath house. \n3:00 PM COOL DOWN LAKE WALK – Let’s dabble our toes in the water and enjoy all the “cool” discoveries. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool entrance if it rains. \nSATURDAY\, JULY 3 \n9:00 AM HIKE THE BONEYARD – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path\, full of nature discovery. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike\, so be sure to wear comfortable clothes\, good hiking shoes\, and bring some drinking water. Meet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking area. \n10:00 AM TREE ID GAME – Come on down and enjoy a fine little game that will help you get to know the local trees a little better. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it’s raining. \n1:00 PM HOME-MADE ICE CREAM – There’s nothing better on a hot afternoon than some homemade ice cream! SUMMARY:Bristol’s Star Spangled Community-Wide Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Believe in Bristol is happy to announce the upcoming schedule for Bristol’s annual Independence Day celebration. The event\, previously hosted by both Celebrate Bristol and Believe in Bristol\, was forced to take a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThis year’s July 4th Celebration is packed full of fun events and activities the whole family can enjoy\, complete with a free Border Bash concert featuring Virginia Ground with Dave Eggar and Amythyst Kiah\, but will be missing the major attraction of fireworks. \n“During the early stages of event planning for July 4th\, availability of fireworks and funding source were a significant challenge we were not prepared for\,” said Maggie Elliott\, Executive Director for Believe in Bristol. “The cancellations from 2020 put extra pressure on the pyrotechnic companies who service our area; they saw a decline in technician permit renewals at the same time demand went up\, making fireworks unavailable to us for this year’s event.” \nBelieve in Bristol will not keep the lack of fireworks from diminishing an opportunity to gather the Bristol community for the holiday celebration\, beginning with the annual July 4th parade. Those interested in being part of the parade may contact the Believe in Bristol office\, or visit www.believeinbristol.org to fill out the entry form to participate. \nSUNDAY\, July 4 – Star-Spangled 4th of July \n4:00 pm Parade Line-up on Bob Morrison Blvd \n5:00 pm Bristol’s Independence Day Parade on State Street \n6:00 pm Events in Cumberland Square Park \nSpecial Recognition of all Veterans \nPresented by Danny Hill \nFamily Fun Events in the Park Including: \nFree Inflatables\, “Eating Contests\,” and more. \nFood\, Beverage\, and Craft Vendors Available \nBORDER BASH SUMMER CONCERT \n7:00 pm VIRGINIA GROUND FEAT. DAVE EGGAR \nAfter 10 years apart\, Virginia Ground reunited\, and within a year\, they released their sophomore album\, Valley of the Crow. In 2018 they were named a FloydFest “On the Rise” Band. Also in 2018\, lead singer and guitarist\, Jamen Denton grabbed the overall winning award for his songwriting at the Richard Leigh Songwriter’s Festival held annually in Abingdon\, VA. \nThe band’s most recent EP\, Radio Songs\, self-released by Middle Fork Records in late 2018\, is their most recent work. \nThese days\, Virginia Ground plugs in more at shows as Denton plays lead on electric guitar. But the band never forgets their roots for those old crowd favorites when he picks up the acoustic and blends vocals and sound with original members\, Jon McGlocklin singing harmonies and Will Outlaw on trombone\, and newest members\, Jim Denton on bass\, and Noah Denton on percussion. \n8:30 pm AMYTHYST KIAH \nWith an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled\, the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter expands on the uncompromising artistry she most recently revealed as part of Our Native Daughters\, an all-women-of-color supergroup whose Kiah-penned standout “Black Myself” earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the 2019 Folk Alliance International Awards. \nWhen met with the transcendent quality of her newly elevated sound\, what emerges is an extraordinary vessel for Kiah’s songwriting: a raw yet nuanced examination of grief\, alienation\, and the hard-won triumph of total self-acceptance. \nThis new studio version of “Black Myself” is a glorious collision of two vastly different worlds: the iconoclastic alt-rock that first sparked her musical passion\, and the roots/old-time-music scene. \nIn addition\, with Believe in Bristol is looking for hard-working and enthusiastic volunteers to add to their volunteer team\, and there are a variety of shifts still available for the Star Spangled Celebration. If you are interested in donating your time\, contact the Believe in Bristol office at info@believeinbristol.org for more information. \nWe would like to give our sponsors for 2021 a huge thank you for helping us make this event possible for our Bristol community! Bristol’s Star Spangled Celebration & Border Bash is hosted by Believe in Bristol. Our sponsors in 2021 include City of Bristol\, Tennessee\, Bank of Tennessee\, Blackbird Bakery\, Eric & Christina Blevins\, Bristol Tattoo Company\, Burke\, Powers & Harty Insurance\, Mr. & Mrs. William Burriss\, Jr.\, Dr. & Mrs. Ben Cowan\, Robin & Margaret Feierabend\, John & Brenda Fincher\, Guthrie Dentistry\, Edd Hill\, Sara Beth Hitt & Kris Versteegen\, J.A. Street & Associates\, Kil’n Time Contemporary Ceramics Studio\, Middle Fork Records\, RE/MAX Results – Josh Taylor\, Mike & Linda Riley\, Tom & Barbara Smith\, Spiegler & Blevins\, CPAs\, Strongwell\, Dr. and Mrs. Earl Wilson\, WQUT / WKOS. SUMMARY:Unicoi Freedom Fest
DESCRIPTION:Unicoi\, Tenn. —  The Town of Unicoi will host its annual Freedom Fest\, presented by Jones and Church Farms\, Sunday\, July 4\, from 5 to 10 p.m. at Unicoi Elementary School\, located at 404 Massachusetts Ave.  The event will include plenty of food\, live music and the Unicoi County Hospital Fireworks Spectacular at dark. \nAmerica’s favorite 80s tribute band\, The Breakfast Club\, will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. to crank up the party in honor of America’s independence while families dance the night away to favorite rock and roll classics. Powershift\, a band of emergency first responders from Elizabethton\, will open the evening at 5:30 p.m. and warm the crowd with their country and rock tunes full of local flavor. \n“We’re ecstatic to be featuring a larger band this year\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “The Breakfast Club puts on a high-energy\, fun and nostalgic show that I think families are going to love.” \n“The success of the Strawberry Festival this year opened our eyes to the possibility that we might have even more visitors for our Fourth of July celebration\,” said Mayor Kathy Bullen. “So we want to make sure to put on a good show and expand our offerings to accommodate a larger celebration.” \nAs always\, the Unicoi Ruritan will be serving up favorites such as BBQ\, hot dogs and funnel cakes under the pavilion. But even more food options have been added this year with local church Casa de Dios offering tacos and tamales\, the Hungarian Sausage King Food Truck selling hamburgers\, italian sausages and Philly cheese steaks\, and Tommy’s Italian Ice serving up sweet treats like deep-fried oreos\, funnel cakes and italian ice sure to hit the spot. \nThe Unicoi County Hospital Fireworks Spectacular will close out the evening by lighting up the night sky at 9:30 p.m. with a magnificent display of colors and sound in honor of America’s freedom. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating and patriotic glow necklaces are available at the information booth for $1 each. Attendees are also asked to review the event’s parking maps\, which will be available on the town’s website soon\, and plan ahead to minimize traffic congestion. \n“Parking was an issue at the Strawberry Festival this year\,” said Director Shelton. “So we wanted to make sure we provided more options for Freedom Fest.” \nMountain Commerce Bank is providing complimentary shuttles that will begin at 4 p.m. and visitors are encouraged to utilize these lots prior to seeking downtown parking. Shuttle stops will be listed on the online parking map. \n“Our downtown village\, around the school where the event is held\, is mostly residential\,” said Unicoi Police Chief Andy Slagle. “We will be closing some streets and rerouting traffic in that area so it will be easier for visitors to take advantage of the shuttles and avoid the congestion.” \nAll shuttled lots will charge $5-$10 for parking and will be staffed by local civic\, youth and church groups.  Any organization interested in working a lot for the proceeds\, or a percentage of the proceeds depending upon the lot\, should contact the communications and programs department as soon as possible. \nFor locals that are used to parking downtown\, most churches in the village will be providing parking\, either for free or for a $5 charge\, including Unicoi Church of God and Unicoi United Methodist Church. Traffic will be controlled by Unicoi Police and most downtown streets will have a “traffic hold” placed on them for at least 45 minutes to an hour after the fireworks display. \n“We took the traffic hold straight out of Bristol Motor Speedway’s playbook\,” said Chief Slagle. “Safety is our number one priority and giving the pedestrians a chance to move out of the area prior to releasing the traffic flow is the right thing to do given it’s a nighttime event. We also ask for everyone’s patience after the fireworks as our officers work to get everyone home safely.” \nDesignated handicap parking will also be available downtown at Unicoi United Methodist Church and in the back parking lot of Unicoi Elementary School. \nThe Town of Unicoi extends its appreciation to Jones and Church Farms\, Unicoi County Hospital\, Mountain Commerce Bank\, East Tennessee Rent-Alls\, Whistle Stop Deli and Catering\, and Limestone Cove Market and Deli for their gracious support of Freedom Fest. Special thanks to event partners Town of Unicoi Police Department\, Unicoi Volunteer Fire Department\, Unicoi County Emergency Management Agency\, Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department and Unicoi County EMS for their dedication to keeping the event and guests safe\, as well as the many volunteers that help make Freedom Fest possible. \nAnyone interested in volunteering at Freedom Fest should contact the Tourist Information Center at (423) 735-0517 or email recreationaide@unicoitn.net as soon as possible. Additional information is available on the town’s website\, ExploreUnicoi.com. \n
