DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY JULY 6\n11:00 AM LEAF RUBBINGS – Let’s “rub up against” some nature discoveries.\nCreate a lasting reminder of nature’s amazing textures. Meet at the Open\nAir Chapel\, or main bath house if it is raining. \n1:00 PM POISONOUS PLANTS – Do you know which plants are not safe to\ntouch? There are more than you may think! Meet at the Open Air Chapel\nfor a short identification discussion that may save you from an\naccidentally painful experience. Meet in the main bathhouse if it rains.\n3:00 PM INSECT ART – They’re more than just creepy crawlers. Take a closer\nlook – insects have some amazing colors and patterns! Let’s use insects as\n“living models” for our art. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main bath\nhouse if it is raining. \n4:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest. \nMeet at the main bath house for a short\, refreshing hike. \n7:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the\nyoung-at-heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about\nour natural world. If it’s raining\, meet at the main bath house. \n9:00 PM TENNESSEE SEASONS – Enjoy a tour of all four seasons in the hills of\nTennessee. With words and pictures\, we will experience the excitement of\nyear-round discovery. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool entrance if it\nis raining. \nWEDNESDAY JULY 7\n9:00 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail!\nEnjoy beautiful vistas of the summer fields\, as we search for signs of the\nunique habitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll\ncarpool to the start of a two hour hike. \n11:30 AM SOIL STUDIES – It’s not just plain old “dirt!” Come “dig into” some new\ndiscoveries about the soil beneath our feet. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.\n1:00 PM EDIBLE PLANTS RAMBLE – Are they weeds or are they dinner?\nLearn to make a salad from lawn plants. Meet at the camp store and let’s\nwalk on down. \n3:00 PM JUNIOR RANGERS: WILDLIFE SHELTERS – Help our park become\na better home for wildlife. You’ll make our land a fine habitat\, and begin\nto earn your Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or main\nbath house if it’s raining. \nNOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground\, unless otherwise specified. \nWEDNESDAY\, CONTINUED\n7:00 PM BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you could\nsurvive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying bug! Meet at\nthe Open Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it is raining. \n8:30 PM FURRY FLIERS – There’s no need to fear these furry little pilots! Get the facts\nabout our common East Tennessee bats. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or pool\nentrance if it is raining. \nTHURSDAY JULY 8\n9:00 AM HIKE THE BONEYARD – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path\, full\nof nature discovery. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike\, so be sure to wear\ncomfortable clothes\, good hiking shoes\, and bring some drinking water. Meet at\nthe Mountain Bike Trail parking area. \n10:00 AM MORNING BIRD WALK – Wake up and smell the worms! Come for a nice\nmorning walk around the campground and greet the day with our feathered\nfriends! Bring binoculars if you have them (we’ll have a few extras). Meet at the\nCamp Store. \n12 NOON LICHENS – Come walk to discover some of our park’s most amazing plants! \nYou’ll really “take a liking” to them! Meet at the main bath house. \n4:00 PM FLYWAYS & BYWAYS – Meet at the Open Air Chapel to discover more about\nthe creatures that WING their way through the Warriors’ Path. In case of rain\,\nmeet at the main bath house. \n7:00 PM BIRDS OF PREY – Meet some real live feathered hunters. Come to the Open\nAir Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is raining\, meet at the main\nbath house. \n9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there\nat night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a\nnight in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the\ncamp store. We’ll carpool out to the park back country. \nFRIDAY JULY 9\n9:00 AM RIPARIAN WALK – Riparian means along the creek bank! Come along for a\ncool hike near Fall Creek\, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. Drive to the\ncamp store\, and we’ll carpool. Be sure to wear good hiking footwear. \n10:30 AM MYSTERY BAG – Try your hand at discovering some natural textures. See if\nyou can guess which natural object is which. Meet at the Open Air Chapel\, or the\nmain bath house if it is raining. \n12 NOON NOISY TOYS – How did the pioneer children make music or noise? Make your\nvery own “musical” instrument with a few simple things from nature. Meet at\nthe Open Air Chapel to create some “beautiful music.” In case of rain\, meet at\nthe main bath house. \n1:30 PM PINE CONE BIRD FEEDERS – Let’s make a snack for our feathered friends!\nMeet at the main bath house\, and you’ll be able to bring back home your own\nlittle bird feeder. \n4:00 PM CRITTER PATHS – Be a critter detective! Find out what’s been wandering \nthrough the campground habitats. Meet at the camp store. \nFRIDAY\, CONTINUED \n7:00 PM NATURE JOURNAL – Come create your own little “nature diary.” Your home-\nmade book will be a perfect way to remember all your nature fun in the park! \nMeet at the Open Air Chapel\, or the main bath house if it is raining. \n9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night\, a crackling fire\, and\nsome local\, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle\, east end of the\nmain campground. If it is raining\, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool\nentrance. \nSATURDAY JULY 10\n9:00 AM HIKE THE WHITETAIL LOOP – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’\nPath\, full of wildlife discovery. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike\, so be\nsure to wear comfortable clothes\, good hiking shoes\, and bring some drinking\nwater. Drive to the camp store\, and we’ll carpool. \n12 NOON BEAD CRAFT – Create your own beaded necklace or bracelet. We’ll bring the \nbeads\, you supply the patient fingers! Meet at the main bath house. \n1:30 PM SPOTLIGHT WALK – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural discoveries. \nMeet at the camp store to begin a short\, sunlit walk \n3:00 PM TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag games work.\nMeet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it is raining\, meet at\nthe main bath house. \n6:00 PM CATTAIL CRAFTS – The early settlers along the Warriors’ Path couldn’t afford\nto waste anything! Even old corn husks could become a doll or toy. Instead of\ncorn husks\, we’ll use cattail plants. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to try this twist\non an old-timey craft. If it’s raining\, meet at the main bath house.\n8:00 PM FOLK MEDICINE – How did folks deal with their ills before there were\npharmacies or doctors? Our Appalachian region is rich in tradition\, including the\ntradition of folk medicine. Perhaps you know some traditional medicines or\nhealing methods passed on to you. We would love to listen and learn! Children\ncome to listen\, and adults come to share your family traditions. Meet at the\nOpen Air Chapel\, or main bath house if it’s raining. \nSUNDAY\, JULY 11\n9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open\nAir Chapel\, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. DESCRIPTION:Butterflies through Binoculars\nSaturday\, July 10 2:00 pm\nLed by Larry McDaniel of Tri Cities Young Naturalists\,\nEverybody loves butterflies. They are beautiful\, fly during the day and are easy to find. Let’s go find some as\nwe walk the grounds of Sycamore Shoals on Saturday\, July 10 at 2:00 pm. We’ll see and learn about a number\nof species. We won’t be catching them or using nets. Instead we will watch them using binoculars and try to get\nsome photos too. So\, bring binoculars\, cameras and water to enjoy this fun and educational activity. We have\nsome binoculars to lend to anyone who needs them.
