SUMMARY:Heritage Alliance Trivia Night Gets Spooky This October
DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Alliance\, or should we say Scare-itage Alliance is bringing its riotously fun trivia night back in October with questions to test your knowledge of all things spooky and historical! \nJoin us at the Eureka Inn in Jonesborough on Friday\, October 8th at 7:00 pm for general history-based trivia questions\, friendly competition\, and a ton of fun! The Eureka Inn will host both events in their outside courtyard and feature a “light bites” menu. \n  \nNot a “history buff?” Don’t worry! These questions cover a wide range of topics and categories and include something for everyone. We will have questions about Halloween\, witches\, movies\, and more! \n  \nTeams (of up to six people) can register up until the evening of the event\, which will kick off at 7:00 PM and last about an hour and a half. We request that teams check in with the hosts prior to the event. Joe Spiker\, Head Docent of the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum\, and Megan Cullen Tewell\, Programming Coordinator at the Heritage Alliance\, will host the event\, tallying points and administering prizes to the winners. The event is family-friendly and open to all ages. The cost is $5 per team\, although additional donations are appreciated. This is an outdoor event (weather permitting)\, but we ask that you wear a mask until seated at your table\, and we ask that anyone who enters the Eureka wears a mask. Costumes are encouraged. \n  \nYou can sign your team up for trivia at Heritageall.org. The link to sign up for the event is at the top of the page. SUMMARY:Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – We may be tired of hearing it\, but the COVID-19 virus continues to dominate our\nthinking as to what to do and how to do it. In the case of Exchange Place\, the Steering Committee\ndecided that the Fall Folk Arts Festival could be held in September as a modified\, outdoor-only event\, and\nthat proved to be very successful. However\, the always-popular Witches Wynd (that second word is\npronounced “why-nd\,” rhymes with “kind”)\, does not have that luxury. These in-person\, Halloween-\nthemed series of stories are best told live and inside many of the antebellum structures that allow\nExchange Place to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means that some two-dozen\naudience members are shoulder-to-shoulder with one another in small\, enclosed spaces\, the type of\nenvironment in which the virus thrives. \nIt is not our goal to allow COVID-19 to breed. It IS our goal\, however\, to continue our long-standing\ntradition of providing quality stories. Therefore\, for this 29 th edition\, we will\, for the second\nconsecutive year\, offer Witches Wynd as a virtual affair. \nBeginning on Friday\, October 22 and available right through October 31 – Halloween night\,\nwhen witches ride the night sky – you will be able to log onto witcheswynd.com and experience tales\nof the macabre\, the paranormal\, the unexplained\, all from the comfort of your home. Exchange Place is\nsuggesting a donation of $10.00\, which can be paid right at the time of viewing with any major\ncredit card. Please note that if you want to watch this special Witches Wynd more than once\, you will be\nasked to make the $10.00 donation each time. However\, unlike previous years\, when people were only\nable to attend on the Friday and Saturday nights prior to Halloween\, this year there will be multiple\nopportunities to log on and hear these marvelous stories. \nThis year’s event will be a little different than it was last year. We are offering four major storytellers:\nJudy (Butterfly) Farlow is a woman of many talents and personalities. She has been educating and\nperforming for more than twenty years\, from backyard picnics to the White House. A national award-\nwinning storyteller\, she is a performing member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild\, participates with\nthe National Storytelling Network\, and has appeared at numerous festivals and events\, including\nGatlinburg’s Smoky Mountain Tales and Tunes\, and the Virginia Renaissance Faire. \nAgnese Goin holds a master’s degree in storytelling from East Tennessee State University. Until COVID\nwreaked havoc with our lives\, she had been a Storyteller in Residence at Lincoln Elementary School and\nWashington Elementary School\, and freely admitted that teaching storytelling to children had been the\nhighlight of her week. \nHannah Harvey\, Ph.D.\, is a nationally-known storyteller and award-winning teacher\, with a doctorate\nin oral history performance (performance ethnography).  She has performed at the National Storytelling\nFestival\, the International Fringe Festival in Scotland\, Yale University\, and in three storytelling programs\nwith The Great Courses.  Dr. Harvey specializes in Appalachian oral histories\, and has worked as a\nconsultant for physicians\, pastors\, and psychiatrists on the power of storytelling to shape cultural\nidentity. \nJudy Womack has been a professional storyteller and actor for more than thirty years. Her use of \ndramatic movement and the spoken word allows stories to come alive\, and encourages listeners to\nstretch their imaginations. A past recipient of the Arts Council of Kingsport’s Distinguished Artist Award\,\nshe has conducted drama and storytelling workshops at Barter Theatre\, the Kingsport Ballet and Theatre\nBristol\, among other venues. \nAnd we are also offering two very special guests:\nKatie Hoffman\, Ph. D.\, will be providing music throughout the program. A scholar of Appalachian\ncultural heritage with a doctorate in English\, she is the founder of Appalworks\, a company that focuses\non different aspects of Appalachian culture\, history\, and heritage\, and weaves them into programs that\neducate and entertain.  She is a talented singer/songwriter\, and has been singing\, playing\, and lecturing\nabout traditional Appalachian music for over three decades. \nBillee Moore has been a volunteer at Exchange Place for more than forty years\, which included serving\nfor several years as the Chair of the Steering Committee. She was the person who created Witches\nWynd back in the early 1990s\, and for this virtual edition\, Billee opens the program with her exclusive\nmemory of how this event came to be. \nFor more information\, please call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071.\nExchange Place is a non-profit\, volunteer-run living history farm\, educational facility and regional\nattraction that seeks to preserve\, protect\, interpret\, and manage the history\, heritage\, and artifacts\npertaining to mid-19 th century farm life in Northeast Tennessee.

SUMMARY:NHRA Camping World Drag Racing
DESCRIPTION:BRISTOL\, Tenn. (May 5\, 2021) – The NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals has been added to the 2021 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series schedule on October 15-17\, it was announced today by NHRA and Bristol Dragway officials. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021\, the NHRA race weekend at the legendary drag racing facility in Northeast Tennessee will become a critical playoff race in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship. \nThe schedule addition marks a return to Bristol Dragway for the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series\, which has not competed there since June 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \n“We can’t wait to hear the roar of nitro-powered engines rumbling once again at historic Bristol Dragway as we welcome fans back to an NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series event and celebrate our 20th anniversary of NHRA racing at Thunder Valley\,” said Jerry Caldwell\, executive vice president and general manager\, Bristol Dragway. “We anticipate a lot of championship drama in the top classes taking place during the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals as one of the final three races on the 2021 schedule.” \nIn addition to the marquee Top Fuel and Funny Car categories\, both Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle are scheduled to compete. Pro Stock is making its return to Bristol following a one-year absence in 2019\, while Pro Stock Motorcycle competitors will make their Bristol points race debut. Pro Mod\, Mountain Motor Pro Stock and several Lucas Oil Series sportsman classes also are included in the event lineup. \n“We couldn’t be happier to bring Bristol back on board for the 2021 season\,” said Glen Cromwell\, NHRA President. “The NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals is a staple on the NHRA circuit. The fall date will give us the opportunity to allow more loyal NHRA fans into the facility. To have the event as a Countdown race is an added bonus for both NHRA fans and competitors.” \nThe fire-breathing\, 11\,000-horsepower nitro machines of Top Fuel and Funny Car will once again headline the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. The 2019 winners\, Mike Salinas (Top Fuel) and Bob Tasca III (Funny Car)\, are expected to attend and defend their titles. Three-time Bristol winner Doug Kalitta and defending Top Fuel world champion and the 2013 Bristol winner Steve Torrence will also be headliners to watch. In Funny Car\, five-time Bristol winner Ron Capps will have a chance to become the winningest pro category driver at the facility. Four-time Funny Car winner and 2019 Bristol runner-up John Force will be determined to see if he can move into a tie with Capps on the Bristol Funny Car wins list. \nWith elapsed times reaching the 6.45-second range and speeds reaching 215 mph\, the “factory hot rod” Pro Stock category is always a fan-favorite. Multi-time champs Greg Anderson and Erica Enders both have two wins at Thunder Valley and will look to add a third\, which would put them one behind Mike Edwards on the all-time Bristol wins list for Pro Stock. \nThe Pro Stock Motorcycle category may have raced at Bristol twice before\, but not for championship points. Matt Hines won Bristol exhibition events in the two-wheel class in 1999 (eight riders) and 2000 (16 riders)\, which means the 2021 NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals will see PSM competitors battling for the first time in an official points capacity at Bristol Dragway. The carbureted or electronic fuel injected\, gasoline-burning bikes are capable of reaching speeds over 200 mph and covering the quarter-mile distance in 6.73 seconds or quicker. \nThree-time world champion Angelle Sampey and fellow competitor Steve Johnson are the only two current bike competitors who have previously raced on two-wheels at Bristol Dragway. In addition to Sampey and Johnson\, defending series champ Matt Smith\, from nearby King\, N.C.\, and current points leader Ryan Oehler will be among the riders to watch at Bristol. \nThe fan-favorite and unpredictable Pro Mod category also will be featured during the event\, as well as the high-revving Mountain Motor Pro Stock class. Known for its large mix of vehicles and a wide range of engine tuning options\, Pro Mod presents one of the most unique challenges as drivers face off with different combinations as they navigate the quarter-mile. The Mountain Motor Pro Stock class\, which was conceptualized by Thunder Valley Legend Ted Jones at Bristol Dragway in the early 1980s\, features sedans with monstrous 800 cubic-inch engines\, carburetors and large hood scoops that produce roughly 2\,000 horsepower. \nThe event also will feature several classes in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series\, including Stock\, Super Comp\, Super Stock\, Super Gas and Top Dragster. \nThe race will be televised on FS1\, with qualifying coverage on Saturday and eliminations coverage on Sunday. \nThe weekend race schedule will include one round of pro qualifying on Friday at 4:30 p.m.\, two pro qualifying sessions Saturday at noon and 3:30 p.m. and pro eliminations on Sunday starting at noon. Bristol Dragway officials will work with local health officials to determine the COVID-19 protocols and guidelines that will be required for the event as the date gets closer. \nNHRA Thunder Valley Nationals tickets are available by clicking here <https://www.bristolmotorspeedway.com/dragway/nhra-thunder-valley-nationals/> or by calling the Bristol Motor Speedway ticket office at 866-415-4158. Fans who purchased tickets to last year’s cancelled race will be able to apply that purchase toward 2021 tickets. \nAbout Bristol Dragway\nAffectionately known as “Thunder Valley\,” Bristol Dragway is nestled between two mountains in northeast Tennessee near the Virginia state line and sits adjacent to the iconic Bristol Motor Speedway. In 2021\, the historic dragstrip will celebrate its 55th anniversary and is scheduled to play host to numerous major events including the fan-favorite NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals\, a marquee event in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series. Other key events at the Dragway in 2021 include the Bristol Chevy Show and Thunder Valley Mayhem\, Street Car Takeover\, the DER Bracket Series\, weekly Thunder Valley Street Fights series\, BTE World Footbrake Challenge races\, Sparco Fall Fling\, AMRA Thunder Valley Nitro Nationals\, and the NHRA Jr. Drags Eastern Conference Finals. Bristol Dragway also transforms into a premier outdoor concert venue for the world’s greatest music performers and becomes The Thunder Valley Amphitheatre presented by Ballad Health. SUMMARY:Heritage Autumn Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – This autumn belongs to Exchange Place. Following the very successful return of the Fall Folk\nArts Festival in late September\, the Living History Farm will be producing two more events in October that are\nguaranteed to add color and excitement to a season that is always known for its color and excitement. \nOn Sunday\, October 17\, from 2 pm until 4:30 pm\, we will hold our very first Heritage Autumn\nSunday. Admission is $5 per person\, with those under the age of 12 admitted free. As always\, all\nproceeds go towards the care of the farm’s resident animals\, and the continued restoration and preservation of\nthe site\, located at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport. It will follow in the footsteps of the Heritage Summer\nSunday inaugurated back in August\, and will honor the beauty and creativity of fall with an afternoon filled\nwith individual ingenuity\, common among the artisans who can often be found at Exchange Place.\nThree prominent craftspeople will be displaying their skills. Isaac Hendershot is a blacksmith and iron worker\nwho has been “forging in fire” since 2015\, and demonstrating at Exchange Place for the past three years. In\nthe years before the War Between the States\, a blacksmith was a very essential person in every community\,\nand Isaac will put those skills on display\, and answer questions\, in our blacksmith shop. Vickie Almaroad\, a\nmember of the Overmountain Weavers Guild and a producer of flax and linen\, will show how one can process\nflax into fiber. (Other members of the Guild will be demonstrating their skills in the fiber arts.) And Joy Smith\,\nwho has been making baskets for more than three decades\, will demonstrate different types of basket making\,\nincluding Nantucket\, Shaker\, and simple market baskets. \nExchange Place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, and one of the prime reasons is that\nseveral of our buildings are original to the site\, having been built by either the Gaines or Preston families after\nthe conclusion of the War of 1812. Many of these priceless buildings will feature our knowledgeable\nvolunteers\, who will be happy to expound on the history of each structure\, as well as offer up other juicy\ntidbits that will help place the farmstead within the context of life in Northeast Tennessee in the early 19 th\ncentury. The garden\, which logically sits next to the kitchen\, will also be staffed with Master Gardeners\, who\nwill be able to describe what is grown there\, and how each item was used by families in the antebellum years.\nAnd of course\, people love seeing and interacting with our resident animals. Included among our flock of\nsheep are some who were born just this past spring! They are joined by two roosters\, seven hens and a chick;\na horse; a Shorthorn milking cow; a Jerusalem donkey; and a pair of American Guinea hogs. They will all be\nvisible\, with some of them accessible for a “meet-and-greet” in the 1851 barn. \nNow\, in our very first paragraph\, we mentioned that Exchange Place has two major events scheduled for\nOctober. In addition to the Heritage Autumn Sunday on October 17\, the extremely popular Witches\nWynd will be held\, and like last year will be a virtual affair\, due to the continued presence of COVID-19.\nThis will be the 29 th consecutive year that we will be offering tales of mystery and the supernatural\, told by\nsome of the finest storytellers in our region. This 2021 edition will also feature music and a very special\nintroduction from Billee Moore\, who created Witches Wynd for Exchange Place more than a quarter of a\ncentury ago. More complete information will be released next week. \nFor more information on Heritage Autumn Sunday on October 17\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-\n288-6071\, write to exchangeplacefestivals@gmail.com\, or visit our website at\nhttps://www.exchangeplace.info. \nExchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of mid-\nnineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit organization maintained\nand operated entirely by volunteers and is supported by donations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants.
