SUMMARY:Exchange Place Living History Farm: Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – People in the Tri-Cities and the Appalachian Highlands have grown up with Exchange Place\,\nand especially with its seasonal celebrations. And now\, one of the oldest fairs of its kind in our region will be\nentering its second half-century\, as Exchange Place Living History Farm holds its Fall Folk Arts Festival\nfor the 51st time. A joyous celebration of pioneer arts and crafts and the harvest season\, the festival will take\nplace on Saturday\, September 23\, from 10 am until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 24 from noon\nuntil 5 pm. Admission is $5\, with those under 12 admitted free. As always\, proceeds go towards the\ncare of the farm’s animals and the continued restoration and preservation of the site\, located at 4812\nOrebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.\nBoth sides of Orebank Road will be filled with sales\, foods and demonstrations as festival vendors offer a wide\narray of traditional folk arts\, along with plants\, local foods and seasonal crafts. Artisans\, including\nwoodworkers\, potters\, authors and artists\, will display and sell their work. Unique crafts will be found\neverywhere – leather goods; a variety of soaps\, including one made from donkey milk; toasty warm hats and\nmittens made from alpaca fleece; handcrafted greeting cards; and many knitted and crocheted items. There\nwill also be local honey\, goat milk cheeses\, homemade jams\, jellies and breads\, and much more.\nA focus of the Fall Folk Arts Festival is on demonstrations of fall activities that might have been found on a mid-\nnineteenth century Northeast Tennessee farm. History will come alive as visitors see sorghum being milled and\ncooked on Saturday\, with Maggie T. Mule pulling the mill\, while Sunday’s activities will consist of details about\nthe process of making sorghum. (Pure sorghum syrup\, made fresh this year by the Guenther family of Muddy\nPond\, TN\, will be on sale\, as long as supplies last.) Elsewhere on the farm volunteers will demonstrate other\nskills such as blacksmithing and chair caning.\nGuilds around the region continue to teach and perpetuate folk arts and handicrafts. The Overmountain\nWeavers Guild began at the first Fall Festival 51 years ago\, and this partnership continues at the Burow\nMuseum as they demonstrate the arts of spinning and weaving. Visitors can see curtains for the historic site\nbeing woven on the restored Rocker Beater loom\, learn the story of the weavers behind the antique drafts that\ncame with the first loom gifted to Exchange Place\, and see the three top award winners from the OMWG\nAnniversary Challenge. Guests may also weave a part of an antique draft themselves. Guild members will be\navailable to show\, and give more information\, on the sale of antique and vintage spinning and weaving\nequipment. Another long tradition is the Tri State Basket Guild offering the opportunity for youth to make their\nown baskets\, with proceeds going to feed the resident animals. In addition\, Chapter 162 of the National\nAssociation of Watch and Clock Collectors will return with a host of antique clocks and advice on how to restore\nold timepieces Thanks to the generosity of Rod Groenewold of Kingsport\, one of his clocks will be available at\nhis booth as part of the Silent Auction.\nIn the kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will be baking sweet potato biscuits and\nhoecakes to go with that fresh sorghum syrup\, as well as other foods common in the antebellum era. The\ncostumed Junior Apprentices will not only be assisting in this fun task but are also a part of demonstrations\naround the farmstead\, including gourd crafting near the Cook’s Cabin and rug braiding on the Main House front\nporch. Some of their handcrafted items\, including tulip poplar bark baskets and hand-forged knives\, will be\nincluded in the Silent Auction to help raise funds for their program.\nA special shopping opportunity this fall is the result of volunteers cleaning out the John Gaines Store prior to its \ncontinuing restoration\, along with corners of other buildings. Many of these "treasures" — such as a hand-\ncrafted mountain dulcimer — and other items found that are no longer used\, do not fit the site's 19th century\nfocus and will be offered to visitors in the Silent Auction\, held in the Roseland Visitor's Center and in the\nBaaaa..rn Sale near the 1910 Barn. Historic details of items will be included in the display.\nA highlight of this festival will be the offering of two major workshops. On Saturday\, master crafter Heather\nAshworth will teach two classes in broom-making. Reprising the program she offered two years ago\, Ms.\nAshworth will offer classes in the Roseland building from 10 am until 12:30 pm\, and another from 1:30 pm\nuntil 4 pm. She will supply all materials as she teaches students how to bind two whisk hand brooms\, using\nbroom corn and colorful cord. The cost will be $70 and will include all materials\, plus admission to the Fall Folk\nArts Festival. Students must register for either class in advance by contacting her at\nhello.heatherashworth@gmail.com.\nThe other workshop will be held on Sunday. Back by popular demand\, Jennifer Hanlon has scheduled a\nnew needle felting class; this year’s project is to make a 2D/3D pumpkin refrigerator magnet. The workshop\nwill begin at noon\, also in Roseland\, and will continue for about three hours. The cost of this workshop will\nvary ($25 to $45)\, depending on how many supplies you would like Ms. Hanlon to furnish. More information\,\nincluding registration\, can be found at www.hanlonscreativecorner.com.\nChildren's "chores and play" will be scattered around the farmstead\, allowing the young (along with those\nyouthful in mind and spirit!) a chance to experience what it was like to be a child in the 19th century. Thanks\nto volunteers and community groups\, a wide range of children's hands-on activities will be available\, including\nmaking a rope with the Boy Scouts. As always\, visitors will have the opportunity to wander over to the 1851\nbarn and meet some of those animals who live there all year long\, including our donkey\, cow\, and cats\, plus\nthe sheep\, chickens\, and pigs found in various other locations. There will also be one vendor bringing baby\nchicks to the festival!\nA large variety of foods and drinks will be available throughout the weekend for snacks and lunch to eat on\nsite\, as well as food items to take home. And all of this will feature a backdrop of excellent live music\,\nprovided by local and regional artists. (A tentative schedule of performances\, always subject to last-minute\nchanges\, is listed at the bottom of this release.)\nThe official countdown to Witches Wynd begins each year with the Fall Folk Arts Festival. Exchange Place’s\nunique storytelling adventure will be offered live again this year\, and tickets will first be made available during\nthe Festival. The 31st Witches Wynd is Friday\, October 20\, and Saturday\, October 21\, and tickets must\nbe purchased in advance. Historically\, this unique blend of macabre tales and ballads sells out quickly since\nonly a limited number of spaces are available\, so we encourage people to purchase them during the Fall\nFestival. Tickets are $10 apiece and will be found at the Museum Store.\nFor more information or to volunteer at the festival\, please call 423-288-6071\, visit our new website at\nexchangeplacetn.org\, or write to epfestivals.gf@gmail.com.\nExchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of mid-\nnineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit organization\, maintained\nand operated entirely by volunteers and supported solely by donations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants. \n \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 23\n10 – 11 am KINGSPORT COMMUNITY BAND\n11 am – noon STRING BREAK\nnoon – 1 pm CHRIS LONG\n1 – 2 pm RENAISSANCE STRINGS\n2 – 3 pm STRAWBERRY JAM\n3 – 4 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND\n4 – 5 pm THE HONEYCUTTS \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 24 \nnoon – 1 pm\n1 – 2 pm JIM ANN COUNTRY\n2 – 3 pm STATE STREET STRING BAND\n3 – 4 pm DEXTER RAMEY\n4 – 5 pm RED AND GREY

SUMMARY:Museum Story Time: Piggies in a Polka by Kathi Appelt
DESCRIPTION:Museum Story Time: Piggies in a Polka by Kathi Appelt\n\nOctober 6 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am\n\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, October 6\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. EST \nLocation: The Learning Center\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum \nCost: Free and open to the public \nJoin us in the museum’s Learning Center for our monthly Museum Story Time program. Aimed at toddler-age children and their grown-ups\, we will gather on the first Friday of each month for a music- or Appalachia-related storybook\, a tune or two by WBCM Radio Bristol show host Ella Patrick\, and a related activity or coloring sheet. \nThis month we will be reading Hello Crow written by Jeff Daniel Marion and illustrated by Leslie Bowman. \nAbout Piggies in a Polka \nIt’s time for the annual holler hootenanny\, and these little piggies know how to party! “The drummer piggy hits a groove\,/ he keeps the polka beat./ It’s a hoopy-shoopy rhythm/ and the pigs all stomp their feet\,” writes Appelt (Oh My Baby\, Little One). The star of the barn dance is Porcina\, a Rubenesque chanteuse whose high notes make “all the bachelor piggies sigh.” But the real show is in Pham’s (Before I Was Your Mother) suedelike\, digital illustrations. She crowds the barn floor with ecstatic couples—and an occasional singleton—carried away by the music and merrymaking (in one scene\, a pig can be spotted floating in the punch bowl; throughout\, a duck quacks with abandon). Hues of rose and gold emanate from the footlights and lanterns\, bouncing off the walls and illuminating the angular planes of the pigs’ plump bodies. Investing her porcine participants with an individual personality\, Pham makes the pages pulsate with the heady crush and buzz of a joint that’s jumpin’. Ages 3-7. \nAbout the Author \nKathi Appelt is the author of the Newbery Honoree\, National Book Award finalist\, and bestselling The Underneath as well as the National Book Award finalist The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp\, Maybe a Fox (with Alison McGhee)\, Keeper\, and many picture books including Counting Crows and Max Attacks. She has two grown children and lives in College Station\, Texas\, with her husband.

SUMMARY:Kingsport: Solar Eclipse Viewings
DESCRIPTION:Special Viewings for Annular Solar Eclipse \nAn annular solar eclipse is when the Moon perfectly aligns with and blocks the Sun. Due to its distance from the Sun\, the Moon looks smaller\, thus you can still see a ring of sunlight surrounding it. The eclipse is a unique sight\, and you have to be in the narrow path of this alignment to witness it. \nThough the Tri-Cities is not close to this path\, we will still be able to see part of the Sun blocked by the Moon. \nSpecial viewings of this partial solar eclipse will take place on Saturday\, October 14 in downtown Kingsport and on the campus of East Tennessee State University. There will not be a special viewing at Bays Mountain Park. \nVIEWING LOCATIONS \nThe Kingsport Public Library will have two solar telescopes from the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club set up to view a magnified view of the Sun. The viewing will take place in Glen Bruce Park from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on October 14. \n\nThe ETSU Physics Department and the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club are partnering to provide safe\, telescopic views of the Sun. The viewing will take place in the ETSU student parking lot on W. Walnut Street in Johnson City (across from the Johnson City Family Practice) from 11:46 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. on October 14. \n\nIf the weather is too cloudy or rainy\, the viewings will be cancelled. \n\nWhether you make it to a viewing or not\, you may want to have your own solar glasses to dim the light of the Sun to safe levels. The gift shop at Bays Mountain Park has these glasses for sale for only $2 each. \n\nPlease Note: NEVER look directly at the Sun without proper protection. \n“Eclipses are special events and the perfect fun for the entire family\,” said Planetarium Director Adam Thanz. “Whether you can visit a place to view\, use your own solar glasses or project with a colander\, be safe and understand you are in direct alignment with the Sun\, Moon and Earth.” \nFor information about other events\, activities and programs offered by Bays Mountain park\, visit www.baysmountain.com. \nAbout Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium \nAnnually\, more than 200\,000 visitors pass through Bays Mountain Park making it one of the State of Tennessee’s Top 50 Most Visited Attractions\, according to the State of Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. One of the nation’s largest city-owned parks with 3\,750 acres\, Bays Mountain Park features roughly 44 miles of hiking trails\, a state-of-the-art planetarium\, wildlife habitats\, fun exhibits\, a 44-acre lake\, ropes course with zip line\, trails for mountain biking and much\, much more. \nAbout the City of Kingsport \nFounded in 1917\, the City of Kingsport (pop. 55\,400) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern U.S. The city is widely known as a planned community\, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3\,750-acre park\, nature preserve\, planetarium and observatory. Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.”

Other instruments may be introduced as to be determined by instructors. Lessons may be paid for per class or for up to 10 classes at a time. Scholarships are available upon request. For more information about signing up for JAM or to inquire about scholarships\, email Erika Barker at ebarker@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org. \nJunior Appalachian Musicians is a non-profit and the parent organization for 50+ after school programs for children in grades 4 – 8. We provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old time and bluegrass music. JAM introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region\, such as fiddle\, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization\, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free\, and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program. \nBe sure to check out JAM Kids on Facebook and Instagram! \n \n \nThe JAM Program Model \nJAM is an after-school program for children in grades 4 – 8 and beyond that introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region\, such as fiddle\, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization\, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free\, and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program. \nJunior Appalachian Musicians ® is a registered trademark of Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc. \nIn JAM\, instrument instruction is often augmented by dance and vocal instruction as well as string band classes and group enrichment lessons\, which introduce children to additional Appalachian culture and history. The JAM program model provides children with opportunities to not only learn traditional music\, but to also perform in small and large groups. Field trips\, visiting artists and an introduction to the rich history of music unique to each local community further supplement program offerings. Each JAM program is encouraged to foster musical traditions by teaching local styles of traditional mountain music and dance to children. Instructors are also encouraged to teach students to learn music by ear\, as to preserve oral traditions as much as possible. Other teaching methodologies and instructional skills are covered in regional professional development and training sessions held multiple times per year and hosted by JAM. JAM also encourages student engagement across programs with regional performance and learning activities throughout the year. For a full list of benefits to affiliates\, click here. \nJAM believes that all children should have access to traditional old time and bluegrass music. It is recommended that each program provide financial assistance through scholarships to children in need. The program model bases tuition fees on student lunch status: $10/week for full pay children\, and $5/week for reduced pay children. \nClass sizes typically have a student teacher ratio of 8:1 or less. JAM mandates that each affiliated program conduct criminal background checks on their instructors\, directors\, and other staff members and volunteers. Programs must be held in public facilities accessible to the community. Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc prohibits discrimination against any persons on the bases of race\, color\, national origin\, disability\, sex\, gender identity\, religion\, reprisal\, political beliefs\, familial or parental status\, and sexual orientation. \nFor a full listing of affiliation requirements\, click here. \nHistory of JAM \nRealizing the need to preserve a vital aspect of mountain culture as well as the need for positive activities to underserved youth\, Helen White\, then a guidance counselor at Sparta Elementary School\, founded the first JAM program in Alleghany County\, NC in the spring of 2000 with help from other local musicians and educators. Interest in the program spread rapidly with assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts\, NC State Arts Council\, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and “The Crooked Road – Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.” \nIn 2007\, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation provided funding to allow the development of a regional infrastructure. The Dana Foundation\, Virginia Commission for Arts\, the Virginia Foundation for Humanities\, the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Harris and Frances Block Foundation and the Tides Foundation have provided funding for materials development. \n“Junior Appalachian Musicians” was incorporated in 2008 as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt corporation to promote a shared vision of JAM and to provide an umbrella through which to offer resources\, training materials and activities to benefit programs individually and collectively. Currently in nearly 30 locations in North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Tennessee and Virginia\, JAM affiliates are providing access to the joy of music to thousands of youth while instilling renewed interest and pride in their heritage. \nInterested in learning more about JAM? Click here.

SUMMARY:Bristol: Pumpkin Palooza and Halloween Parade
DESCRIPTION:Downtown Bristol to Host a Full Day of Halloween Festivities\, \nIncluding the Inaugural Halloween Parade\n \nSeptember 19\, 2023 (Bristol\, TN/VA) – Bristol continues its tradition of Halloween festivities this year on Saturday\, October 28\, 2023. Kicking off with Pumpkin Palooza at Downtown Center\, children will be able to select and decorate free pumpkins beginning at 9am. From 10am-12pm\, the sidewalks will be filled with costumed kids and families for Trick-or-Treating with Downtown Bristol businesses. In addition to our ongoing annual traditions\, we are pleased to announce the Inaugural Downtown Bristol Halloween Parade! The parade will begin at 6:30pm. The parade route will begin at the municipal lot in front of Bristol TN City Hall (801 Anderson Street) and conclude at the intersection of State Street and Lee Street/5th Street. The route spans approximately 0.5 miles. Parade registration is now open to businesses\, nonprofits\, groups\, families\, marching bands\, and more. \n\nThe Bristol TN/VA Inaugural Halloween Parade will feature two distinct categories of participants\, allowing for diverse and enjoyable experiences for all attendees. Parade entrants will self-categorize their entries as either “Fun & Festive” or “Scary & Macabre” to indicate the nature of their costumes and performances. Costumes falling under the “Fun & Festive” category are designed to be suitable for all ages\, emphasizing creativity\, humor\, and the spirit of Halloween without overly scary or frightening elements. The “Scary & Macabre” category delves into the darker and more sinister side of Halloween\, featuring haunting costumes inspired by horror\, the supernatural\, and the macabre. \n\n“We feel that the parade will be another marquee event for downtown Bristol that will draw participants\, spectators\, and excitement from throughout the region\,” said Wyatt Lilly\, downtown business owner. “People love Halloween and look for more to do than just trick or treating with children. Over recent years\, Halloween has transitioned from a children’s holiday to one that more and more adults participate in.” \n\nA number of Downtown Bristol businesses will also be hosting festive events\, such as storytime\, costume parties\, trunk-or-treat\, and live music. For more information on the full schedule of events for the weekend\, visit believeinbristol.org.
