SUMMARY:Oak Hill Schoolhouse: Girl Scouts Day
DESCRIPTION:The historic Oak Hill Schoolhouse is ready to welcome Girl  Scouts on Saturday\, August 14th for a unique experience. Built in 1886 by the Knob Creek Community\, Oak Hill School housed 1st – 8th grade students until 1952.  It was relocated to Jonesborough and preserved\, and today it continues to welcome students as a part of the Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program.  Now you can be a part of this award winning\, hands-on learning experience! \nThe school day will start at 9:00 am and end at 2:00 pm and will include lessons in arithmetic\, reading\, penmanship using quill pens\, history\, geography\, and much more.  Lunch will be held on the grounds of the schoolhouse but Scouts and chaperones must bring their own lunches. There will also be recess\, of course.  The cost for the day is $5.00 per Girl Scout\, and pre-registration is required as space is limited to just 18 Scouts.  We will not be accepting registrations the day of the event. The day will start with a brief orientation at the Jonesborough Visitor’s Center. Contact the Heritage Alliance at 423-753-9580\, or email us at amason@heritageall.org  to register your Girl Scout or troop.  This program is suggested for Brownies-Ambassador. The money will assist with the continued maintenance of the building and help support the Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program.  Aspects of this program can be connected to requirements for multiple Girl Scout badges. \nStep back in time and experience history! \nThe Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences.  For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information can also be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/.

SUMMARY:Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center Announces Fall Open House
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts will host a Carnival-themed Fall Open House on Saturday\, August 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The McKinney Center announced its fall schedule of classes of experiential learning opportunities for both children and adults earlier this summer.  Registration is now underway for all upcoming classes. \nThe Fall Open House will be an opportunity for the public to preview fall classes available\, and faculty will be present for questions and demonstrations. There will also be Carnival games for kids. \nThe Early Bird discount for classes\, which is $10 off each class\, will end that day as well.  Individual class costs vary. Registration will run through Saturday\, August 21 for most classes.  Students can register online at mckinneycenter.com. \n“The Open House is a good time to meet your instructor and to really see what you will get out of taking a class here at the McKinney Center\,” stated McKinney Center Director Theresa Hammons. “There is something for everyone here at the McKinney Center.  Most of our classes are for beginners\, but one of the great things about our offerings is that the class sizes are small\, usually no more than 8 to 10 students. If you are more or less skilled\, the instructor has time to work with you one on one.” \nArt\, music\, writing\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this fall for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop the understanding and experimentation with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and processes.  For older elementary-aged students\, courses are taught to build their skills as artists including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level.  Classes in writing\, film\, music and dance are also available for this age range including Art Adventures\, Creative Construction\, Homeschool Art\, Kids N Clay\, Young Potters\, Let’s Make a TV Show\, Mosaics\, Tap\, Watercolor and Guitar.  Offerings for teens and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music and various workshops. \nThe one-day workshop options for the fall semester are extensive and include Introduction to the Zentangle Method of Drawing\, Glass Fusion workshops\, several ceramic wheel workshops\, several ceramic decorating and design workshops.  Students with a group of six or more can schedule a private workshop. \nScholarships are available for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Students or parents can fill out applications online at mckinneycenter.com or email Hammons for more information.   \nThe McKinney Center is open to the public Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Staff encourage all visitors to be at home at the McKinney Center; take a class\, participate in an exhibition\, come to a lecture\, volunteer your time\, attend a workshop\, or set up an easel on the grounds and paint.  Please check the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School Facebook or Instagram pages throughout the year for information about exciting programs and events.

Due to their historic significance and age\, they are exempt from ADA Compliance requirements. Please consider suitability when ordering tickets. \nThis event is a fundraiser for the Chuckey Depot Museum in Historic Jonesborough. \nThe Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum (WVRHS&M)\, the town of Jonesborough\, Tn. and the Heritage Alliance have partnered to preserve the former Southern Railway train depot from Chuckey\, Tn. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 for its historic architectural significance. Built by Southern Railway in 1906\, the depot had been privately leased since 1959\, but was situated on land owned by Southern successor Norfolk Southern\, who notified the building’s owners of its plans to demolish the historic structure because the lease had expired. The owners of the building gifted it to the town of Jonesborough\, and it was moved from Chuckey to Jonesborough. It now serves as a museum. Although the railroad is still prominent in Jonesborough\, the town’s depot was razed in the 1970s. \n### \nAbout the Chuckey Depot Museum: The mission of the Chuckey Depot Museum focuses on regional railroads in its exhibits\, like the Southern\, Clinchfield\, and East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. This exhibit gives the Museum a chance to showcase items that come from all over the country\, including a map of railroads in Ohio and a stock certificate for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. The Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, Tennessee\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. The Chuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 South 2nd Avenue. For more information\, please call 423.753.1010. The Depot’s regular hours are Thursday-Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society. \nAbout the Town of Jonesborough: A unique 18th century town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee\, Jonesborough’s natural beauty\, charming architecture\, and storytelling heritage have attracted visitors worldwide. Stay a day\, a week or forever\, and create your own stories in beautiful Historic Jonesborough. Visit www.jonesborough.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Hear ‘Campfire Tales’ at Bays Mountain Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild every Friday in September \n\nSeptember 3\, 10\, 17 and 24\n 7 p.m.\nBays Moutain Park \n\nEveryone gather around the campfire and let Bays Mountain Park tell you a tale. This September\, visit the Bays Mountain Amphitheater for “Campfire Tales\,” a free storytelling event sponsored by Knoxville TVA Credit Union. \nEach Friday night of the month\, BMP welcomes tellers from Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild\, who belong to one of the oldest continuing groups of storytellers in the nation. You’ll hear two exciting stories each night\, with a different lineup of tellers every Friday. \n“’ Campfire Tales’ is one of the most exciting events in our 50th Anniversary lineup\,” said Bays Mountain Park Manager Rob Cole. “We hope families and folks of all ages will come up to enjoy a great night at the park.” \n For more than 50 years\, and even well beyond that by those early settlers and families who lived here\, Bays Mountain’s history has been filled with storytellers spinning yarns about topics related to mountain living in the olden days or\, more recently\, tales about animals found throughout our region or even the wonders found in the night skies above us. \n Today\, as educational interpreters\, BMP park naturalists and astronomy staff have developed wonderful storytelling skills to the benefit of thousands of students and visitors who come to the park seeking to grow their knowledge in any of those areas. \n“We have a rich tradition of storytelling on Bays Mountain\,” Cole said. “So it seems very fitting to have Jonesborough’s Storytellers at the park for some good\, ol’ fashioned\, creative fun as told by those who do it best.” \n“Campfire Tales” begins at 7 p.m. on September 3\, 10\, 17 and 24. This program is free with park entry\, and each night will last about an hour and a half. The first 50 kids will receive swag bags\, and Knoxville TVA Credit Union will give out lanterns while supplies last. \n The amphitheater is bench seating\, and you are welcome to bring stadium chairs for your comfort. Bag/lawn chairs and outside food/drink are not allowed. \n The Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild have told stories live every Tuesday night in Jonesborough for over 25 years. After a year on Zoom\, they are now back to live performances. You can find information on their shows on their website at storytellersguild.org or by calling 423-730-8977. Tellers are available for private shows and events.  \nTo learn more about Bays Mountain Park\, visit baysmountain.com or call 423-229-9447.
