SUMMARY:Hear ‘Campfire Tales’ at Bays Mountain Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild every Friday in September \n\nSeptember 3\, 10\, 17 and 24\n 7 p.m.\nBays Moutain Park \n\nEveryone gather around the campfire and let Bays Mountain Park tell you a tale. This September\, visit the Bays Mountain Amphitheater for “Campfire Tales\,” a free storytelling event sponsored by Knoxville TVA Credit Union. \nEach Friday night of the month\, BMP welcomes tellers from Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild\, who belong to one of the oldest continuing groups of storytellers in the nation. You’ll hear two exciting stories each night\, with a different lineup of tellers every Friday. \n“’ Campfire Tales’ is one of the most exciting events in our 50th Anniversary lineup\,” said Bays Mountain Park Manager Rob Cole. “We hope families and folks of all ages will come up to enjoy a great night at the park.” \n For more than 50 years\, and even well beyond that by those early settlers and families who lived here\, Bays Mountain’s history has been filled with storytellers spinning yarns about topics related to mountain living in the olden days or\, more recently\, tales about animals found throughout our region or even the wonders found in the night skies above us. \n Today\, as educational interpreters\, BMP park naturalists and astronomy staff have developed wonderful storytelling skills to the benefit of thousands of students and visitors who come to the park seeking to grow their knowledge in any of those areas. \n“We have a rich tradition of storytelling on Bays Mountain\,” Cole said. “So it seems very fitting to have Jonesborough’s Storytellers at the park for some good\, ol’ fashioned\, creative fun as told by those who do it best.” \n“Campfire Tales” begins at 7 p.m. on September 3\, 10\, 17 and 24. This program is free with park entry\, and each night will last about an hour and a half. The first 50 kids will receive swag bags\, and Knoxville TVA Credit Union will give out lanterns while supplies last. \n The amphitheater is bench seating\, and you are welcome to bring stadium chairs for your comfort. Bag/lawn chairs and outside food/drink are not allowed. \n The Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild have told stories live every Tuesday night in Jonesborough for over 25 years. After a year on Zoom\, they are now back to live performances. You can find information on their shows on their website at storytellersguild.org or by calling 423-730-8977. Tellers are available for private shows and events. \nTo learn more about Bays Mountain Park\, visit baysmountain.com or call 423-229-9447.

One is an eight-day keywind clock that dates to\n1919\, one is a cast-iron mantle clock made in 1890\, and the third is an Ansonia Clock Company “Antler” clock\,\nmade around 1905. These clocks will be on display and can be bid on at their booth\, with the proceeds\nbenefiting Exchange Place. \nHistory is always alive throughout the farm. While the log kitchen will be closed as it undergoes a restoration\,\nthe Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, and our energetic Junior Apprentices\, will prepare some of the foods\nthe Preston family would have eaten in the mid-nineteenth century\, using the bread oven and an outdoor fire\n(weather permitting). They will also be demonstrating gourd crafting in the yard of the restored Cook’s Cabin.\nThe blacksmith’s shop will be open\, demonstrating the various tasks that made the “smithy” such a valuable\nperson in antebellum America. Behind the blacksmith’s shop\, sorghum will\, once again\, be milled and cooked\n(only on Saturday\, please note). Mules will do the milling in the morning (they will not be available for rides or\nfor petting)\, and the cooking process will be done throughout the afternoon. Our resident fiber artists – better \nknown as the Overmountain Weavers' Guild — will demonstrate the intricacies of spinning and weaving on the\nRoseland porch and in the Burow Museum. Boy Scout Troop #387 will be demonstrating rope-making\, and\nthey plan to sell whatever ropes they create\, with all proceeds being donated to Exchange Place.\nActivities for the youngsters are always prominent during these Exchange Place fetes\, and children of all ages\nwill not only get to play the kinds of games that the Preston family would have played\, but they will be\nencouraged to try their hands at some of the "chores” that were expected of young people on an antebellum\nfarm\, such as creating toys and grinding corn. \nThe traditional Fall Scarecrow Challenge will not be held this year. There will\, however\, be an area set aside\nwhere visitors can add to the creation of the Exchange Place scarecrows\, and learn their long and interesting\nhistory. However\, other popular Festival traditions remain\, including being able to meet and greet all of the\nheritage breed of animals that live on the farmstead all year long\, and listening to the wide selection of\nregional musicians who provide an Americana soundtrack to the surroundings. (A schedule is listed below\, but\nplease note that it is always subject to change.)\nOne of Exchange Place’s most popular events every year is Witches Wynd\, a Halloween-based\nstorytelling adventure. As of this writing\, no decision has been made about how\, or if\, it will be\npresented this year. An official announcement will be forthcoming. \nFor more information\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, write to\nexchangeplacefestivals@gmail.com\, or visit our website at https://www.exchangeplace.info. And\nplease remember that all existing CDC protocols will be followed\, including social distancing\, and\nwe are strongly urging everyone to wear a mask. \nExchange Place is a living history farm\, listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, whose mission is to\npreserve and interpret the heritage of mid-nineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange\nPlace is a non-profit organization maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and is supported by\ndonations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants. \n \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 25 \n10 – 11 am KINGSPORT COMMUNITY BAND\n11 am – noon CHRIS LONG\nnoon – 1 pm STRAWBERRY JAM\n1 – 2 pm STATE STREET STRING BAND\n2 – 3 pm RENAISSANCE STRINGS\n3 – 4 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND\n4 – 5 pm ABINGDON THUMB STRUMMERS \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 26 \nnoon – 1 pm\n1 – 2 pm RED AND GREY\n2 – 3 pm STRING BREAK\n3 – 4 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND\n4 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Overmountain Victory Trail Celebration and Militia Muster
DESCRIPTION:The year was 1780\, and the tide of the American Revolution was turning against the patriot cause. The British\, forced out of New England\, gained new allies in the divided South\, and won victory after victory in a bloody civil war. Charleston had fallen to the British\, American forces had crumbled at the battle of Camden\, and things were looking very bleak for the cause of independence. Then the impossible occurred! Frontiersmen west of the blue ridge mountains began a long march\, gathering an army along the way from the highlands of Virginia to the hills of South Carolina. At a place called King’s Mountain\, they destroyed British forces and opened the way for the final American victory at Yorktown. \nThe route they took from Virginia to South Carolina\, we now know as the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Come celebrate with us as we re-live the muster of the Overmountain Men\, which occurred at Sycamore Shoals over two hundred years ago. \nJoin us at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park the weekend of Saturday and Sunday\, September 25th & 26th for the Overmountain Victory Trail Celebration and Militia Muster. This weekend will be full of events centering around the story of the Overmountain Men and their historic gathering at Sycamore Shoals. It is a must-see for the entire family. From 10:00 am until 3:00 pm each day the Overmountain Victory Trail Association and the Washington County\, NC Militia will present 18th century demonstrations and activities in and around Fort Watauga. Discover the vital role Sycamore Shoals played in the early frontier community\, and how its significance would impact our nation’s history. Re-enactors in period clothing will be on hand throughout the weekend to share stories and demonstrations of that exciting and tumultuous time. \nAt 1:00 pm On Saturday\, September 25th the Overmountain Victory Trail Association will recreate the historic 1780 river crossing when Colonel William Campbell and 400 mounted militiamen from present day Abingdon\, VA crossed the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals to join Colonels Isaac Shelby and John Sevier in response to a threat from British Major Patrick Ferguson. For the past 46 years Members of the OVTA have recreated this historic occurrence since 1975\, following the same route and timetable as their legendary forebears from Abingdon\, VA to Kings Mountain\, SC. \nLiving history programming will continue Sunday\, September 26th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with more presentations and demonstrations by the Washington County\, NC Militia at Fort Watauga. \nWhile enjoying the activities of the weekend\, be sure to visit the award-winning museum and interpretive center\, and don’t miss the park’s interpretive film “Sycamore Shoals – Story of the American Spirit”. Also visit the park’s Book and Gift Shop to take home a special souvenir or a gift for the history buff or avid reader in your family. These fun-filled and action-packed events are sure to entertain and educate all ages. Most events are free of charge so bring the entire family and relive some of the most crucial days of the American Revolution.
