SUMMARY:Mutts Gone Nuts
DESCRIPTION:GREENEVILLE\, Tenn – Come see the highest jumping dog in the world and her amazing canine cohorts in an all-star revue of doggie derring-do. They’ll have you at WOOF! Bring the entire family to Mutts Gone Nuts at the Niswonger Performing Arts on Feb. 20 at 3:00 PM.\n\nImagine nine of the world’s most talented 4-legged performers in an uproariously funny\, comedy dog spectacular and you get Mutts Gone Nuts! The all-star lineup includes the highest jumping dog in the universe\, two Guinness World Champions\, a hilarious six-pound Pomeranian Pikachu mix\, and a host of previously discarded dogs that will dance\, prance\, flip\, and skip their way right in to your heart.\n\nThe family friendly show runs 75 minutes and was created by veteran comedy team Scott and Joan Houghton. The Houghton’s\, who performed their duo act ‘Jessie & James’ on variety stages from Tokyo to Las Vegas\, joined forces in 2014 with dog trainer extraordinaire Samantha Valle\, world class comedian Jonathan Burns and nine adorable pound puppies to create an action packed\, comedy dog spectacular. All of Mutts Gone Nuts’ dogs were adopted from shelters or from rescues. Sometimes the very behavior that drove the previous owner to relinquish the dog\, becomes the dog’s star quality. Mutts Gone Nuts’ trainers use ‘positive’ force-free training methods. They look for the dog’s natural talents by getting to know their individual personalities. Once they find out what the dog likes to do\, they reinforce those behaviors with treats and/or toys. Co-producer and emcee\, Scott Houghton says “I feel lucky to have come into dog training at a time when force-free\, positive training is the gold standard.” Positive training not only helps build the trust bond between you and your dog but it makes it fun for the dog and the trainer. When dogs perform behaviors they are naturally inclined to do\, they are happiest. When not on tour\, Mutts Gone Nuts’ furry cast members have the run of three fenced acres\, and of course they all live in the house (some even sleep in their bed).\n\nDeemed “A must see!” by the Washington Post\, the dogs will not only amaze you\, they’ll steal your heart and maybe your socks! Mutts Gone Nuts is sure to win Best in Show! See them at Niswonger Performing Arts Center\, Feb. 20 at 3:00 PM. Tickets start at only $15 and are available online at www.npacgreeneville.com\, in person at the NPAC box office\, or by phone at 423-638-1679.

SUMMARY:Watauga Association 250th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Watauga Association\nA 250 th Anniversary Celebration\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park\nSaturday\, April 9 th 10:00 am – 4:00 pm \nThe United States of America may have been born on July 4 th \, 1776\, but the idea of American\nself-government began a full four years earlier in 1772\, and it happened in what is now\nElizabethton\, Tennessee. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will celebrate the birth of\nAmerican democracy with a special event on Saturday\, April 9 th commemorating the 250 th\nanniversary of the Watauga Association. \nIn 1763 a royal proclamation had forbidden settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. As\nBritish rule became increasingly oppressive in the colonies\, people began to move west across\nthe Blue Ridge. Being outside the authority of the 13 colonies\, the settlers in the Watauga River\nvalley saw the need for law and order and joined together to create a compact to “govern and\ndirect for the common good of the people”. In the spring of 1772\, meeting under a large\nsycamore tree by the Doe River in what is now Elizabethton\, TN\, settlement leaders drafted\narticles of governance for the Watauga Association. They negotiated a land lease\, and later a\npurchase\, with the Cherokee\, formed a court and a militia\, and organized the defense of the\nsettlement in 1776. \nThe Watauga Association existed as a body of democratic self-rule for 5 years before being\nannexed by North Carolina in 1777 as Washington County. Lord Dunmore\, the Royal Governor\nof Virginia\, said\, “It at least sets a dangerous example to the people of America of forming\ngovernments distinct from and independent of His Majesty’s authority.” In later years historians\nwould call the Watauga Association the first free and independent community on the continent. It\nproved that Americans could govern themselves\, and four years later the 13 colonies would\ndeclare independence from Great Britain. \nIf you would like to join in the celebration of this historic occasion\, come to Sycamore Shoals\nState Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN on Saturday\, April 9 th . The commemoration will begin at\n10:00 am in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater with a special ceremony which will include a\nwreath laying\, a proclamation by the Carter County Commission\, and a presentation of the\nWatauga Association scene from Tennessee’s official outdoor drama\, Liberty! The Saga of\nSycamore Shoals. \nFollowing the morning program guests are invited to visit the many displays and demonstration\nof 18 th century life that will be presented throughout the day in and around the replica of Fort\nWatauga. Presentations will include 18 th century weaponry\, uniforms and clothing of the period\,\nsoldier’s equipment\, quill pen writing\, colonial era music\, women’s roles on the frontier\,\nflintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, militia drill\, and much more. The event will close at\n4:00 pm. \nAlso\, as part of the celebration\, commemorative tours of the historic Carter Mansion will be\noffered. Built in 1775\, the Carter Mansion is Tennessee’s oldest frame-house and was built by\nCol. John Carter who served as the Chairman of the Watauga Association. Enjoy the detailed\n18th century interiors\, hand carved moldings\, and over-mantle paintings as you visit this elegant\nfrontier home. Tours will be at 11:00 am\, 1:30 pm\, & 2:30 pm. Admission is free\, but you must\nregister at www.tnstateparks.com/parks/events/sycamore-shoals. The John and Landon Carter\nMansion is located at 1031 Broad Street\, Elizabethton\, TN 37643. \nThe Watauga Association 250 th is a chance to bring the entire family and immerse yourself in one\nof Tennessee’s most historic sites. Admission is free so take this rare opportunity to be a part of\nthe anniversary of one of the most historic events in our nation’s history. Walk in the path of\npatriots\, “share in the glorious cause of liberty”\, and see how you can make history at Sycamore\nShoals State Historic Park! \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park is located at 1651 West Elk Ave. Elizabethton\, TN 37643.\nFor more information log on to www.tnstateparks.com\, visit us on Facebook\, or call 423-543-\n5808.

SUMMARY:Spring Garden Fair at the Exchange Place Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – A true celebration of heritage farming and heirloom gardening\, the Spring Garden\nFair at the Exchange Place Living History Farm is making its long-awaited return after a two-year\,\nCOVID-enforced hiatus. Long a favorite of area gardeners — novices and experts alike — the 36 th\nedition will be open to the public on Saturday\, April 30\, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.\, and Sunday\,\nMay 1\, from noon until 5 p.m.\, at the farmstead\, located at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport. \nThe oldest garden fair in the region\, the Spring Garden Fair will feature thousands of plants for sale\,\nfocusing on heritage and natives\, from old favorites to rare and hard-to-find varieties. Growers will offer\nperennials\, annuals\, trees and shrubs\, with an emphasis on herbs\, natives and heirloom plants. Sharing\ntheir knowledge about plant selection and care\, Master Gardeners and other gardening experts will be\navailable throughout the weekend to answer questions and make recommendations. In addition\, folk\nand yard artisans will also be found throughout the grounds with their unique plant and garden-related\narts and crafts\, while other vendors will offer sales of chicks\, bird feeders\, handmade soaps\, pottery\, tree\nchimes\, and much more\, including a wide variety of food choices. \nTrue to its mission\, Exchange Place will offer slices of 19 th century life in almost every corner. Our\nCotswold sheep will be getting their hair cut in the ritual shearing of the sheep. T.J. DeWitt will\nperform this necessary and fun chore on Saturday\, April 30\, between 10 am and noon\, then\nbetween 1 pm and 3 pm; and if you miss it on Saturday\, he will complete the task on Sunday\, May\n1\, between 1 pm and 3 pm. The Overmountain Weavers Guild will then take that wool and\ncontinue their long “Sheep to Shawl” tradition of carding (cleaning\, separating and straightening) the\nwool\, spinning it into yarn and weaving that yarn into scarves and\, perhaps\, other beautiful and wearable\nitems. All are invited to help with the carding. \nThe Overmountain Weavers Guild will also be prominently featured in the Burow Museum\, with an\nexhibit on the fiber traditions of our Appalachian region. A highlight will be antique weaving patterns\nfrom the mid-19 th century that were discovered by our own Suzanne Burow. Also showcased will be two\nantique Appalachian rocker beater looms\, rarely seen nowadays\, that have recently been restored and\nwill be in use\, as members of the Guild weave curtains that will\, when completed\, be hung in the historic\nPreston House. \nA very special feature at this year’s Spring Garden Fair will be the appearance of Jennifer Hanlon. A\nmultimedia artist with a focus on fiber\, the Johnson City resident discovered needle felting a couple of\nyears ago\, and will be offering a workshop on Sunday\, May 1\, between 1 pm and 4 pm. Needle\nfelting is a very therapeutic craft that involves repeatedly stabbing a special type of needle into a piece of\nwool to stiffen and shape it into the desired form. The cost for this workshop is $65\, which includes all\nsupplies and admission to the festival; a minimum of three (3) people are needed to register (adults only\,\nplease\, as the dry-felting needles are sharp!). You can register at www.hanlonscreativecorner.com\,\npayment will be collected at the workshop. \nWhile the hearth kitchen restoration continues\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will be\ncreating the kinds of foods popular in the mid-19 th century in the Cook’s Cabin and\, hopefully\, also\nutilizing the bread oven. The Junior Apprentices\, as per usual\, will be in a variety of places\, performing\nchores and offering insights about how life was lived on an antebellum Northeast Tennessee farm. They\nwill also be hosting a Tennessee Dancing Gourd “spin off” competition near the Cook’s Cabin (day and\ntime still to be determined)\, while their Old-Time Band will be performing during a Maypole Dance. This\nceremony originated in ancient times and celebrated the fruitfulness associated with spring; it was\nrevived in the 19 th century and everyone is invited to welcome the season on Sunday\, May 1\, at 2 pm.\nA wide variety of hands-on children’s activities will be found all around the grounds\, and young’uns will\ncertainly want to say hello to the resident animals\, including Delilah (our cow)\, Jenny (our donkey)\,\nChance (our horse)\, plus our numerous sheep. \nAs always\, music will fill the air during the Spring Garden Fair\, as an overabundance of local talent is\nscheduled to perform throughout the weekend. A complete schedule is listed below (though it is always\nsubject to last-minute changes). And don't worry\, if you get hungry or thirsty\, baked goods\, lunch\,\ndrinks and snacks (including the ever-popular funnel cakes and kettle corn!) will be available.\nAdmission is $5 for anyone over the age of 12 and free for everyone else. All proceeds from\nthe event help with the restoration and upkeep of the site\, which is proudly listed on the National\nRegister of Historic Places. \nThe Spring Garden Fair strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible with recycling\,\ncomposting\, and re-using. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own plant carriers and to bring used\nnursery pots for recycling/reusing. Exchange Place is a non-profit\, volunteer-run living history farm\,\neducational facility and regional attraction that seeks to preserve\, protect\, interpret\, and manage the\nhistory\, heritage\, and artifacts pertaining to mid-19 th century farm life in Northeast Tennessee.
