SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

Tennessee Extension Master Gardeners are volunteers who perform a variety of tasks including answering horticultural questions from the public\, establishing and maintaining demonstration gardens\, establishing and maintaining public gardens\, educating and training the youth to be Junior Master Gardeners\, running plant clinics\, and supporting Master Gardener training programs. In Hawkins County\, the volunteers participate in a variety of gardening and educational projects.\nLast year\, they assumed the responsibility for the care and maintenance of the flower gardens at Price Public Community Center.  They also maintain a small flower garden behind the University of Tennessee/Tennessee State University Extension Office.  They started a Junior Master Gardener Program at Rogersville City School.\nThis spring they planted a demonstration garden on East Main Street with nine raised beds and two field plots. The vegetables produced in the raised beds were donated to the Shepherd’s Center to feed disadvantaged members of the community.\nTo date\, they have donated over 436 pounds of fresh produce! In one of the field plots\, they raised several varieties of grafted tomatoes provided by the University of Tennessee as part of a field study. They also raised corn\, pole beans and bush beans that were sold to local restaurants and families to raise money to support their new organization.  In the fall\, they will be assisting with the next Master Gardener Course at the extension office.\nFor 2017\, they are planning a spring plant sale and fruit tree grafting clinic that will be open to the public. They plan to expand the demonstration garden area to include more raised beds\, several varieties of fruit and increase the size of the field plots. They will also assist with selecting and planting trees\, shrubs and flowers for the planned park area on Main Street.  For Heritage Days\, they would like to demonstrate how to propagate plants through stem cuttings. Taking cuttings from existing plants provides the opportunity to cheaply\, effectively and quickly expand the landscape. This method allows homeowners to propagate plants that are already known to be successful in their landscape. Plants started from cuttings\, reach maturity more quickly than if raised from seeds.
