He got his first taste of the limelight when he joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in early 1963; the Father of Bluegrass moved McCoury from the banjo to guitar\, made him his lead singer\, and gave him a lifetime’s worth of bluegrass tutelage direct from the source. Flash-forward to 1990s and the Del McCoury Band is on top of the bluegrass world\, along the way giving birth to a more startling phenomenon: the emergence of the group onto the larger musical scene as a unique torchbearer for the entire sweep of bluegrass and its history. For it turned out that the unmistakable authenticity of McCoury’s music-along with his good-natured willingness to keep alert for new sounds and new opportunities-had bred fans in some unlikely places. That bluegrass-bred stars like Gill and Alison Krauss (who first met Del at a bluegrass festival when she filled in for a missing fiddler of his) would sing his praises wasn’t surprising\, but who would have expected country-rock icons like Steve Earle or jam bands like the supremely popular Phish to have joined in the chorus? By the second half of the ’90s\, the acclaim-and Del’s open-mindedness-put McCourys in onstage jams with Phish and on the road and in the studio with Earle\, bringing the Del McCoury Band’s fierce musicianship and its leader’s instantaneous\, easygoing connection with listeners to new arenas. The group appeared on prime time television and began an ongoing series of visits to popular late night TV talk shows\, toured rock clubs and college campuses\, and found itself welcome at country and even jazz-oriented music festivals and venues.\nYet while reaching out to almost unimaginable audiences\,Del’s music retains its signature characteristics. You’ll suddenly pick up on the power and devastation lurking in its quietude\, the doom hiding beneath its unvarnished beauty. You’ll hear the way it magnifies the intimacy at the heart of the North Carolina duo’s music\, as if they created their own musical language as they recorded it.\nDue Sept. 30 on Yep Roc Records\, “Blindfaller” builds on the acclaim of Mandolin Orange’s breakthrough debut on the label\, 2013’s “This Side of Jordan\,” and its follow-up\, last year’s “Such Jubilee.”Since then they’ve steadily picked up speed and fans they’ve earned from long stretches on the road\, including appearances at Newport Folk Festival\, Austin City Limits Fest\, and Telluride Bluegrass. It’s been an auspicious journey for a pair who casually met at a bluegrass jam session in 2009.\n“When we finished ‘Such Jubilee\,’ I started writing these songs with a different goal in mind. I thought about how I would write songs for somebody else to record\,” Marlin explains. “I ended up with a bunch of songs like that\, but we chose ones that I still felt personally connected to.”\nHoled up at the Rubber Room studio in Chapel Hill\, N.C.\, with a full band this time around\, they laid down the tracks in a week between touring. They’ve always been keen on the notion that drawn-out recording sessions don’t necessarily yield better results. A good song\, and just one good take\, will always shine through any studio sorcery.\nThe passage of time\, and the regret that often accompanies it\, courses through these songs. “When did all the good times turn to hard lineson my face/ And lead me so far from my place right by your side?” Marlin ruminates on “My Blinded Heart.”\nIn fact\, there’s heartache by the numbers on “Blindfaller.” If you didn’t know better\, you’d swear “Picking Up Pieces” is a tearjerker George Jones or Willie Nelson sang back in the early 1970s. It’s a Mandolin Orange original\, of course\, and also a poignant reminder of the economy and grace with which Marlin imbues his songs – say what’s important and scrap the rest.\nA country dirge with soulful washes of pedal steel and mandolin\, “Wildfire” details the the lingering\, present-day devastation of slavery and the Civil War\, with Marlin’s voice locking into close harmonies with Frantz on the chorus.“Take This Heart of Gold” opens with perhaps the best classic-country line you’ll hear all year: “Take this heart of gold and melt it down.” (Marlin admits it was inspired by a Tom Waits lyric he misheard.)\nBut there’s also room for detours. Straight out of a honky tonk\, “Hard Travelin’” lets the band shift into overdrive. A freewheeling ode to life on the road\, it had been kicking around for a while but never fit on previous releases.\nAs for the album title\, it’s meant to evoke a sense of wonder\, of contemplation. A “faller” is someone who fells trees\, and in this case that person is blind to his/her own actions and those of the world. The spectral cover photo\, by Scott McCormick\, is open to interpretation\, too: Either those trees are engulfed in flames or sunlight is pouring through them. Part metaphor and surprisingly literal\, the title is reflective of a fresh and focused start for one of the most successful and acclaimed musical creators of his era. The tumult his music has come through to get this point\, however\, is very real.\n“I feel so humbled and blessed to be where I am right now\,” says Travis\, who will release the album on his own Post Oak Records. “My voice has never been stronger\, I’m constantly playing and working to become a better guitar player\, banjo player\, vocalist and songwriter. I am honestly as excited about the creative process and performing now as I was the day I signed my first record deal.”\nThe highly abbreviated Tritt timeline has the young Georgian incorporating lifelong influences in Southern Rock\, blues and gospel into his country during a honky-tonk apprenticeship that led him to Warner Bros. His 1990 debut Country Club and its succession of hits put him in the vanguard of the genre’s early ’90s boom. At the same time\, his conspicuous lack of a cowboy hat and musical aggressiveness set him apart. The next eight albums and scores of hit singles led him to amass more than 25 million in career album sales\, two Grammys\, three CMA Awards and a devoted fan base that filled venues coast-to-coast.

In the 1940s and the 1950s\, Farm & Fun Time was an important program in the history of early bluegrass music and helped to establish the careers of legendary performers including Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs\, the Stanley Brothers\, the Osborne Brothers\, Mac Wiseman\, The Sauceman Brothers\, and Curly King & The Tennessee Hilltoppers.
