SUMMARY:2nd Annual Upper East Tennessee Fiddler's Convention
DESCRIPTION:Upper East Tennessee has long been a land of deep musical traditions. Englishman Cecil Sharp knew this in 1916 when he selected Rocky Fork in Unicoi County as his first stop to collect ballads. And in 1925 the famous Mountain City Fiddler’s Convention attracted a who’s who of southern Appalachian fiddling\, and reminds us just how varied and unique this regions music is. The gateway mountain counties of Unicoi\, Carter\, and Johnson give way to the great Tennessee Valley to the north and west\, and to the upper reaches of the western North Carolina mountains to the south and east. The story of the music here is one about the movement of people\, both in and out of these highlands\, and a story about people playing music\, from generation to generation\, in their chosen community. The Upper East Tennessee Fiddler’s Convention celebrates not only the early influential musicians who made recordings (JD Harris\, Osey Helton\, John Dykes\, George and Lloyd Payne\, Dud Vance\, GB Grayson\, Charlie Bowman\, and many others)\, but also the those who played informally\, for the love of music and fellowship with one another.\nThe Upper East Tennessee Fiddler’s Convention is a collaboration between Rocky Fork State Park and ETSU’s Department of Appalachian Studies\, with support from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: James Gregory
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, the unforgettable caricature of veteran comedian James Gregory has stood grinning: his shirt untucked\, his arms outstretched\, a carefree welcome to a down-home\, hilarious comedy experience. It’s storytelling at its best. The trademark caricature is the essence of humorist James Gregory’s comedy: rib-tickling reflections on life from the front porch.\nJames is constantly touring. He’s on the road about three days a week\, forty six weeks a year. He continues to entertain sold-out crowds in theaters and comedy clubs and remains in demand for corporate events. James has been the featured entertainer for over 200 corporations\, including the Coca Cola Company\, Kimberly Clark Corporation\, Hewlett Packard and Kroger. James has also been the featured speaker for events sponsored by various civic and church groups.\nJames is heard weekly on syndicated radio shows such as Rick and Bubba\, John Boy and Billy and Bob and Tom. Combined\, these shows are broadcast to people in over 220 cities nationwide. As a result\, he now has a grass-roots following that numbers in the millions.\nJames was born in a rural area about twenty five miles east of Atlanta\, GA. He got his first job at the age of twelve at a small country grocery store. By the time he was fifteen\, he was working thirty-seven hours a week\, as well as going to school. As an adult\, James has worked for the U.S. Postal Service\, the Department of Defense\, and spent almost ten years as a salesman before discovering the wonderful world of stand-up comedy.\nJames does not “tip-toe” through life as if he’s walking on broken glass or egg shells. That style is evident on stage as well. He is not politically correct. Much of his humor is centered on brilliant observations of crazy relatives and people obsessed with the slightest change in weather conditions – now referred to as global warming. He delights in poking fun at modern sensitive parents and out-of-control environmentalists. Gregory has been quoted as saying\, “If you want me to be concerned about endangered species\, you need to convince me that we’re about out of chickens.”\nThe James Gregory show turns the clock back to a time when life was simpler; to a better time\, before the death of common sense; a time when people sat on the front porch and actually talked to each other without a cell phone in their ear.\nJames’ success\, like his comedy\, is the direct result of the values he grew up with. And now\, twenty something years later\, it is this unique brand of humor that packs the crowds into his sold-out shows. The absence of vulgarity sets James apart and his stories are carefully crafted art. “I have lived long enough to know people\, know life”\, Gregory reflects. “My comedy is based on my life experiences. It’s real\, it’s funny and the audience loves it. That’s why I’m still in business.”\n\n\nVenue Information:\nParamount Bristol\n518 State Street\nBristol\, TN\, 37620\nhttps://www.paramountbristol.org/

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: The Roy "Futureman" Wooten and Kevin Spears Experience
DESCRIPTION:ROY WOOTEN AND KEVIN L. SPEARS\nWhat happens when two brilliant musical explorers come together on one stage? An exciting night of priceless musical moments and soul-stirring virtuosity\, that’s for sure. The legendary five-time Grammy Award winner Roy “Futureman” Wooten teams up with master kalimba player and one-man music ensemble Kevin L Spears to create a world-class mix of folk\, electronica\, dance\, rock\, world and funk music that will move your feet and stir your soul.\nWooten is an inventor and virtuoso who is best known for his masterful drumming and percussion skills as a founding member of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. At the heart of that music is a ground breaking percussion technique performed on his first invention he calls the “Drumitar\,” a guitar-shaped instrument allows him to replicate sounds of an entire contemporary drum kit with just a few fingers. Hailed as one of the best players alive today\, Kevin Spears’ breathtaking ability on an electric version of the traditional African instrument called kalimba\, is often compared to music legends such as Herbie Hancock\, Jimi Hendrix\, Bobby McFerrin and Les Paul.\nThese sonic visionaries join forces to musically transport you into a futuristic world using otherworldly instruments that will leave you spellbound and uplifted.\n\n\nVenue Information:\nParamount Bristol\n518 State Street\nBristol\, TN\, 37620\nhttps://www.paramountbristol.org/

SUMMARY:Tim Hawkins Show
DESCRIPTION:Since giving up his job as a grocery truck driver in 2002\, Tim Hawkins has been establishing himself as one of the most in-demand comedians in the country. With 300\,000\,000 video views online and over 100 sold-out concerts every year\, his Jackwagon Crew has grown into a revolution of multi-generational proportions.\nTim’s gut-busting comedy show entertains the entire family while doubling down on the funny\, a daunting task in an age where the obscene has become routine. His act is 1 part gifted + 2 parts twisted\, the only certainty being his on-the-nose observations that expose the ridiculousness of daily life while marveling in its hilarity. The perils of marriage\, homeschooling\, and growing up in the Midwest may not exemplify the rock star life\, but they make for really good punchlines.\nSure he’s funny\, but fans are often even more amazed at his singing voice and guitar chops. Tim’s hilarious music videos have brought him viral YouTube fame with fan favorites including “The Chick-fil-A Song\,” “Yoga Pants\,” “Aging Rockers\,” “Things You Don’t Say to Your Wife\,” “Cletus Take the Reel\,” “A Homeschool Family\,” and “The Government Can.” Still\, Tim is no rock star: “It’s not like I have a choice. Comedy is my only life skill.”

SUMMARY:Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers (unplugged) with Special Guest Nathan Stanley — A Benefit for the Appalachian College of Pharmacy
DESCRIPTION:Over 50 years ago\, Larry\, Steve\, and Rudy Gatlin started singing in their little hometown of Abilene\, Texas\, and from there went on to make music history. Over their four-decade career\, that has taken them from dusty Texas stages to White House performances\, from Broadway to Grammy Awards to the top of the country charts\, there has been one unifying element\, music. There’s no harmony quite as pure as family harmony. “Gatlin harmonies spin with high and light precision and their music bleeds and screams of love and a lot of living.” Said Country Capsule.\nBy 1976\, the Gatlin Brothers were in the fast lane\, thanks to the chart-topping success of the Grammy Award-winning “Broken Lady.” The hits continued throughout the rest of the decade\, including their signature song\, “All the Gold in California\,” soon to be followed by “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You).” The number one hits continued throughout the next decade with “I Don’t Wanna Cry\,” “I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love\,” “Statues Without Hearts\,” “Love is Just a Game\,” and “Night Time Magic.” In addition to being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1976\, the trio was nominated for awards by the Country Music Association\, the Academy of Country Music and the Music City News Awards\, among others.\nCome to the Paramount on Friday\, May 25 to hear the legendary Gatlin Brothers sing their top hits from the 1970s\, 1980s and today\, in a display of pure talent that has lit up major marquees and packed concert halls across America for more than 50 years.\nOpening for the Gatlin Brothers is Nathan Stanley. Dubbed the Prince of Bluegrass\, he has been performing since the age of two when he played the spoons with his grandfather’s band The Clinch Mountain Boys at the Grand Ole Opry. He later graduated to playing the mandolin\, and in 2007 became lead singer and rhythm guitar player. He has nine solo albums to his credit. In his performance\, he pays homage to his home\, history and family.\nThis event is for the benefit of the health and educational programs of the Appalachian College of Pharmacy. Located in Southwest Virginia\, The Appalachian College of Pharmacy offers a three-year doctor of pharmacy program\, and is committed to serving the needs of rural and underserved communities in Appalachia as well as throughout the world.
