DESCRIPTION:Tales of Our 250th continues at the Jackson Theatre on September 24th. Have you ever driven down State of Franklin Road or passed State of Franklin Bank and wondered what the name was all about? Come on out to the Jackson and learn about the state that never was. The State of Franklin was the first attempt at statehood outside of the original 13 colonies. At its height\, it included eight counties in what today is Northeast Tennessee\, and Jonesborough was its first capital. Even though it never came to pass\, the attempt brought John Sevier and John Tipton to the forefront of the political arena and influenced the United States Constitution.\n\nThe evening will include a scene from the play The First and Last Town in Tennessee and a historical discussion about the State of Franklin with Dr. William Hardy\, Assistant Professor of History and Lincoln Scholar at Lincoln Memorial University. Dr. Hardy will be joined by the co-directors of Tipton Haynes State Historic Site\, John Tipton’s homeplace\, who will talk about the Battle of Franklin that took place in February of 1788 at the site.\n\nCelebrate local history with the McKinney Center at the Jackson Theatre. They are Pay What You Can\, but go ahead and reserve your seats at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\nEach evening will include a scene or scenes from the original play The First and Last Town in Tennessee\, written by Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, which premiered earlier this year at the McKinney Center and was featured in The New York Times. Join Jonesborough historian Paul Fink\, portrayed by Tim Herron\, as he walks you through the big and small moments that make Jonesborough an important part of the American story.\n\nProgramming dates and times are listed below. This event is in conjunction with many other cities recognizing Dolly on nine-two-five\, September 25\, as communities come together to celebrate the incredible impact she has made through her music\, Appalachian heritage\, generosity and lifelong commitment to children’s literacy. \nThroughout the day\, visitors can enjoy special menus at participating downtown restaurants\, hear Dolly’s music throughout town and take part in activities celebrating her life and legacy. Families are invited to visit the Washington County Book Bus\, where children can choose a free book and participate in a variety of Dolly-themed children’s activities and crafts. \nThe Christopher Taylor Cabin will be transformed into Dolly’s Tennessee Mountain Home for the day. Visitors can step back into Appalachian life while celebrating Dolly’s deep connection to her Tennessee roots. The Heritage Alliance will also host a specialCommunity Quilt of Many Colors project. Community members are invited to add a heartfelt message to a quilt square\, which will be sewn together on-site at the cabin as a lasting tribute to the community’s celebration of Dolly. \nThe Cuppa\, Cuppa\, Cuppa Cobbler Competitionwill begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the International Storytelling Center. Contestants are invited to enter their favorite cobbler recipe\, with any flavor welcome. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample the entries and cast their votes for their favorite. First\, second and third place winners will receive a Dolly-themed prize\, along with Food City gift cards. First place will receive a $100 Food City gift card\, second place will receive a $50 gift card and third place will receive a $25 gift card. The prizes are sponsored by the Jonesborough Tourism Department. DESCRIPTION:Exchange Place (EP) Living History Farm (4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport) invites you to attend our 54th annual Fall Folk Arts Festival on Saturday\, September 26\, from 10am-5pm\, and Sunday\, September 27\, from 12-5pm.  Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12.  In celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States\, Exchange Place is taking this Festival to a new level with one of the largest-ever slates of heritage crafts-makers\, live demonstrations of farmstead activities\, and loads of traditional folk-art\, seasonal crafts and autumn plants for sale.  As always\, there will be delicious food\, music from local performers\, and plenty of hands-on activities for youth.  Come to Exchange Place and experience why people say the farmstead\, proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, is such a special place.  \n  \nA Day in the Life: Demonstrations \nThroughout the Festival\, artists will share their talents with live demonstrations of skills associated with 19th century crafts\, music\, animal husbandry\, and life on a farm.  \n  \nOn the Farmstead side of EP\, Rick Stewart and his son/apprentice\, Brendon\, will demonstrate the heritage craft of “coopering\,” or making churns\, buckets\, barrels\, and tubs from wood staves held together only by wooden hoops.  Representing the fifth generation of Stewarts to master this skill\, Rick has forged a reputation as a master craftsman with demonstrations across the United States\, including the Festival of American Folklife in Washington\, DC\, and in Japan in the 1980s.  Rick now shares his knowledge with others as an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School.  \n  \nNearby\, Dennis Farris\, a master banjo maker\, will serenade guests with old-time tunes on his 1890 Minstrel banjo. During breaks\, he’ll describe how to make banjos from scratch and accept orders for custom instruments.  If you have a simple repair or need the strings changed on your own banjo\, bring it along and chat with Dennis!   \n  \nIn the open area of the Farmstead\, Jack and Jamie Harvey of Sadie’s Soap will show attendees how to make lye soap over a fire.  Next\, walk to the front porch of the Preston House where returning artist Dorothy McMillan will craft dolls and flowers from corn husks\, then sell her finished products.  Also on the front porch\, Camille Daffonwill be weaving seats for EP chairs from flat reed.  She invites attendees to bring their chairs to weave along with her.  On the Preston House back porch\, Randy Rauch will demonstrate powder horn engraving.   \n  \nClose by Steve Gilly and Rod Mullins\, who co-host the popular Stories of Appalachia podcast\, will share captivating folklore from our east Tennessee region. \n  \nIn EP’s log kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society and EP Junior Apprentices (JAs) will prepare foods that the Preston Family would have eaten in the 1850s.  JAs will also carve gourds near the Cook’s Cabin and demonstrate their iron-shaping skills at the blacksmith forge.  Visitors can support the JA program by purchasing their handmade bark baskets and vases\, gourd-based crafts\, and freshly picked cut-flower arrangements at the Cook’s Cabin. \n  \nOn Saturday only\, Maggie T. Mule will work the cane mill to extract sorghum cane juice that will be cooked into sorghum syrup.  On Sunday\, Maggie will retire from being a working mule; please come celebrate her years of service on either Saturday or Sunday – and\, while supplies last\, purchase a pint of pure sorghum syrup from the Guenther family of Muddy Pond\, Tennessee.   \n  \n  \nTalon Ridge Raptor Institute (TRRI) aims to develop our area’s first raptor rehabilitation facility.  Come learn about their organization and meet their raptor ambassador\, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl. \n  \nAcross the road\, T.J. DeWitt will shear EP’s five Cotswold sheep outside the Quilt Barn.  Next door on the Roseland porch\, Kathy Martin will demonstrate paper-making with pulp from iris\, okra\, and yucca stalks on Saturday and offer a hands-on papermaking experience for children.  The Overmountain Weavers Guild will demonstrate spinning and weaving techniques in several locations around the farmstead. On Sunday Guild member Emory LaPrade will be processing flax to spin into linen. \n  \nThe Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) will offer twoopportunities to celebrate our heritage of needle art. A collection of 250th anniversary American patriotic pieces created by members of the local EGA chapter will be on exhibit in the Burow Museum. In the EGA tent\, in addition to a display of completed needlework\, the Guild will host a community stitching project; everyone is encouraged to add a bit of color to a gigantic embroidery pumpkin. Children of all ages are also invited to create an embroidered sassafras leaf (a symbol of EP) to take home.  \n  \nArts\, Crafts\, and Plants for Sale\nMore than 50 local artists and vendors will fill the Farm with their handicrafts\, including baskets\, pottery\, wooden planters and cutting boards\, cornhusk dolls\, woven\, knitted\, crocheted and needle-felted crafts\, assemblage art\, handmade paper and soap\, and handcrafted jewelry. Chrysanthemums\, succulents\, and perennial plants will also be available for purchase.  \n \nBe sure to visit the Museum Gift Shop to check-out unique-to-Exchange Place additions: boutique scarves\, angel ornaments\, crochet baby blankets\, handmade slab pottery\, sheep magnets\, pearl necklaces and earrings\, fancy knitted caps for children\, vintage toys and EP-themed jigsaw puzzles.\n\nChildren’s Activities \nAcross the Farmstead\, child can play games from the 1850s and try harvest-season chores and old-time crafts. The Tri-State Basket Guild will teach children to weave a basket in the Schoolhouse; the $5 fee for this project will purchase feed for Exchange Place’s animals.  \n  \nFood \nAs always\, come hungry and snack on lots of tasty treats as you tour the exhibits\, demonstrations\, and vendors.  From baked goods\, nuts\, and raw honey to hot sauces\, goal milk cheeses\, lemonade\, and ice cream\, there is something for every taste.  Remember to buy an extra bag of kettle corn to take home!    \n  \nTunes of the Time \nThe Kingsport Community Band opens the Festival at 10am on Saturday.  The Renaissance Strings\, EP’s JA Band\, and other local musicians will play 19th-century instruments like dulcimers\, mandolins\, and pennywhistles throughout the weekend.\n\nTo complete your visit\, please say hello to EP’s beloved animal residents: Jenny\, our friendly donkey\, Bliss\, our American Milking Devon cow\, Lily\, EP’s American Guinea Hog piglet\, four egg-laying Dominique chickens\, and five Cotswold sheep\, including Dandelion\, who was born in spring 2025.   \n  \nPaulette Bruggeman\, a member of the Overmountain Weavers Guild\, will lead a rug-hooking workshop on Saturday\, September 26\, from 1pm-4pm in Roseland.  Participants will choose one of two designs (pumpkin or bird) for their very own mini-mug rug.  The cost is $40 and includes all supplies – the wool strips\, hook\, and backing. SUMMARY:Living History Saturday: Private Abraham Nave
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Butler will conclude its 2026 Living History Saturday season with two special programs connecting national events to the lives\, experiences and stories of people from Butler and the greater Watauga Valley. \nOn Saturday\, September 26\, historical interpreter Robert Rambo will portray his ancestor\, Private Abraham Nave\, a farmer\, accomplished bear hunter and Tennessee soldier who served during the War of 1812. \nThe presentation will be followed in October by Walk in Their Boots\, a two-day World War II living-history experience featuring a special Education Day for school groups and homeschool families on Friday\, October 9\, and Life on the Home Front for the public on Saturday\, October 10. \nPrivate Abraham Nave Comes to Life\nThe September 26 Living History Saturday program will introduce visitors to Abraham Nave not simply as a soldier’s name recorded on a muster roll\, but as a husband\, father\, farmer\, hunter and East Tennessean. \nNave and his wife\, Mary\, raised 15 children in the community once known as the “Neck\,” near Elizabethton\, which later became known as Siam. Family history recalls that Nave would leave the family farm for extended hunting trips into the mountains and that the family “always had at least one bear ham in the smokehouse.” \nDuring the War of 1812\, Nave served as a private in the 2nd Regiment of West Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Gunmen. The regiment joined the brigade commanded by Brigadier General John Coffee and participated in the 1814 Pensacola Campaign before continuing to Louisiana to help defend New Orleans from the British. \nThrough period interpretation\, documented history\, and stories preserved by Nave’s descendants\, Rambo will bring his ancestor’s remarkable story back to the mountains he once called home. \nThe program will take place Saturday\, September 26\, from noon until 2 p.m. and is included with regular Museum admission. \nWorld War II and the Town That Wouldn’t Drown\nHistory will come alive again October 9–10 as the Museum explores the sacrifices\, service\, and determination that shaped American life during World War II—and the extraordinary changes taking place in Butler at the same time. \nThe weekend begins Friday\, October 9\, with Walk in Their Boots: World War II and the Town That Wouldn’t Drown\, a special Education Day for students in grades 5–12. \nPublic and private school groups are invited to attend from 9 a.m. until noon. Homeschool students and families are invited to participate from 1 until 3 p.m. \nStudents will rotate through living-history stations featuring period clothing\, equipment\, artifacts\, demonstrations\, and first-person interpretation. They will learn about military service and the vital work performed by families and volunteers on the American home front. \nEducation Day will also include a guided tour of the Museum of Butler\, connecting the national story of World War II to the community’s own history. \nWhile Butler-area men and women were serving their country\, construction was underway on Watauga Dam. Families were displaced\, homes and businesses were moved or dismantled\, and the original town of Butler gradually disappeared beneath the rising waters of Watauga Lake. Some service members returned from the war to discover that their hometown was no longer where they had left it. \nThis connection allows students to consider how world events affected ordinary people—and how one Appalachian community faced extraordinary change with courage and resilience. \nAdvance registration is required for Education Day.
