SUMMARY:Washington County Heritage Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Washington County\, TN Heritage Fair takes place Friday\, September 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday\, September 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Jonesborough. This event’s purpose is to bring local heritage engagement to the public as well as bring together all of the county’s heritage groups. \nHeritage organizations and individuals with specific heritage topic interests will display exhibits on their areas of local interest in the Jonesborough Visitors Center Auditorium. \nA ‘Living History Timeline’ will be displayed throughout the town of Jonesborough’s greenspaces and parks including artisans\, musicians and craftsmen/craftswomen. \nAntique tractors will be showcased in the greenspace outside the Jonesborough Visitors Center. The Heritage Alliance will also host two town tours during the event\, costing $5 (one on Friday and one on Saturday)\, and Old Jonesborough Cemetery tour on Saturday\, costing $5. The Central Christian Church Lawn will be turned into Artisans Village with a basket weaver and chairmaker\, Herbalachia\, and a pottery maker. Sabine Social Society will host colonial dancing and games in front of the Christopher Taylor Cabin. Storytelling Park will have a ‘History Timeline’ dating from Colonial Period to WWII including Cherokee history and diorama\, Overmountain Men and Longhunters\, Revolutionary military display and Women’s Suffrage. \nSchool or homeschool groups are welcome to attend the fair on Friday\, September 2 during the School Day event. DESCRIPTION:The Chuckey Depot hosts new exhibit “Appalachian Crossroads: The Railroads in Johnson City” \n\nThe rich railroad history of the Johnson City area will be on display in the brand new exhibit “Appalachian Crossroads: The Railroads in Johnson City.” The Chuckey Depot Museum in Jonesborough will host a reception for the exhibit on Saturday\, September 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. A special presentation on Johnson City’s railroad history will take place at 1:30 p.m. that day. \n\nLight refreshments will be served. The Chuckey Depot Museum is free of charge\, but donations are greatly appreciated. \n\nWith three train lines crossing in the middle of the downtown area\, Johnson City grew from a village of 600 people in 1880 to the fifth largest city in Tennessee with a population of over 25\,000 in 1930. This exhibit tracks the growth of Johnson City and highlights the people who worked to bring the railroads to this corner of Northeast Tennessee. \n\nThe Chuckey Depot Museum has seasonal hours. DESCRIPTION:Labor Day Yoga Hike at Bays Mountain Park \nCelebrate this Labor Day by participating in a unique\, outdoor exercise program with your friends and family at Bays Mountain Park. \nA local yoga instructor is partnering with Bays Mountain Park to offer a Yoga Hike to the community. The class features a 1.7-mile hike\, out and back portion of the Lakeside Trail that will take approximately 70 minutes to complete (yoga included). \nThe bridges along the Lakeside Trail are utilized to teach standing yoga poses while challenging your strength\, flexibility and balance. Isometric core work will be emphasized while hiking. \n\nThe class will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on September 4. The cost is $6 per person and the class is limited to 15 people. All yoga levels are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Event offers dogs a chance to play and swim in the Outdoor Water Park \nThis year\, for the first time ever\, the Kingsport Aquatic Center is hosting a TWO-DAY Drool Party! \nFor the past 10 years the Kingsport Aquatic Center has ended its summer season by inviting dogs of all breeds and sizes to come down and enjoy an afternoon of running\, jumping and playing in the toddler play area of outdoor water park. \n“Since it’s our 10th year of hosting the Drool Party\, we wanted to celebrate the milestone by offering people an extra day to bring their dogs down and enjoy a few hours in the pool\,” said Aquatics Program Coordinator Madison Gump. \nThe Drool Party will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 9 and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on September 10. \nAdmission is $5 per dog and free to owners. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 10th\, the State of Franklin Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)\,  is hosting its Tenth Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School\, located at 214 East Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library. The program will focus on the history of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution that reads\, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude\, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted\, shall exist within the United States\, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” \n\nThe program will include music\, proclamations\, re-enactors\, and the history of enslavement and abolition in Jonesborough. Several heritage groups will be participating\, including the Kings Mountain NSSAR\, the Overmountain Victory Trail Association\, and participation from other local chapters of the NSDAR. \n\nPlease bring your own chair and a bell to ring! Seating will not be provided on site. The Daughters of the American Revolution began the tradition of celebrating  to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution. In 1955\, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.  The resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into law on August 2\, 1956\, by President Dwight D. DESCRIPTION:“Scott Mingus: The Lincoln Funeral Train; Civil War and Reconstruction”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“No other discipline has its portals so wide open to the general public as history.” \nThe Tri Cities Civil War Round Table is hosting a lecture entitled “The Lincoln Funeral Train; the Civil War and Reconstruction.” This is a continuation of this year’s talks regarding reconstruction.The Lecturer will be Scott Mingus. The event will be held at 7:00 p.m.\, on September 11th\, Room 225 at the Toy F. Reid Eastman Employee Center\, 400 S. Wilcox Drive\, Kingsport\, TN \n The Lincoln Funeral Train; the Civil War and Reconstruction. \nThe funeral train carrying the remains of the slain President Abraham Lincoln passed through the commonwealth of Pennsylvania on April 21-22\, 1865\, on its way to New York City and again on April 28 as it headed west from Buffalo to Cleveland and passed through the Erie region. Tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians passed by the coffin as Lincoln lay in state in Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Massive\, untold numbers of residents watched the funeral train slowly steam past their farms\, small towns\, communities\, and whistle stops. Many left personal reminiscences. Author Scott Mingus has tapped into these often obscure or rare diaries and journal entries\, coupled with the eyewitness accounts of a small cadre of big-city reporters on board the train and those newsmen in the towns through which the train passed to present a detailed\, yet highly readable account of the funeral train’s passage. Mingus includes overviews the use of the locomotives\, crewmen\, railroads\, timetables\, and other interesting aspects. The lecture will be held at 7:00pm on Monday September 11\, 2023 in room 225 of the Eastman Employee Center\, 400 S. He has written more than 30 Civil War and Underground Railroad books and numerous articles for Gettysburg Magazine and other historical journals. He has appeared on C-SPAN\, C-SPAN3\, PBS\, PCN\, and several other TV networks. Mingus writes a blog on the Civil War history of York County\, PA\, where he and his wife Debi live. He also has written six scenario books for miniature wargaming. He received lifetime achievement awards from the York County History Center and the Camp Curtin Historical Society for his many contributions to local history. DESCRIPTION:Plein Air Painting Day with Lewis Chapman\nWEDNESDAY\,  SEPTEMBER 20 from 10am to 2pm\nGrab your easel (or borrow one from the Arts Center) and meet Lewis at the Appalachian Trail access at Cross Mountain Road for a day of plein air painting. \nThe group will meet at the parking lot at the Appalachian Trail access\, located at the corner of Cross Mountain Rd. and Hwy. 91. at 10 a.m. Then hike about a quarter of a mile on an accessible trail. The trail crosses a large field overlooking Shady Valley featuring distant mountain views\, fields\, and low wooden barns. \nLewis will discuss composition\, lighting\, and techniques to indicate detail. All mediums are welcome. Make sure you bring plenty of water\, snacks\, a large hat or an umbrella for shade as well as a camera or cell phone to capture your scene in case the weather changes. SUMMARY:Building the Railroads of the South and Convict Labor Leasing
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on September 21st at 6:30 pm as we welcome Joshua Dacey\, Site Manager at the Chester Inn Museum for this month’s History Happy Hour! \n\nAt the conclusion of the Civil War officials at the state and local levels in many of the former Confederate states vigorously fought to keep a racial caste system in place. This early Jim Crow period saw the enactment of laws and “Black Codes” specifically targeted at formerly enslaved individuals. For generations\, skilled and unskilled enslaved men\, women\, and children were “hired out” to perform menial labor that their enslavers financially profited from. In a new system of convict labor leasing that developed after the Civil War\, state and county governments likewise profited by using their prison populations to labor on commercial or private projects such as road construction\, railway maintenance\, logging\, or mining.  What allowed them to do so was a loophole in the 13th Amendment that stipulates “involuntary servitude” will only be used as “punishment for a crime.” Beginning in 1866 and continuing until 1886\, Tennessee quickly became one of the first states to implement convict labor leasing. Evidence also indicates that a system of convict labor leasing was utilized in Jonesborough as early as 1822. Mr. Dacey will be talking about all this and more. The program is entitled “I’m free from the chain gang now:” Building the Railroads of the South and Convict Labor Leasing. It will begin at 6:30 pm in the International Storytelling Festival. The program is free and open to the public! \n\nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month. DESCRIPTION:Portuguese Water Dog Trials \nSeptember 22nd & 24th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \nObservation Knob Park \n553 Knob Park Rd. \nBristol\, TN 37620. \nThis weekend: September 22nd – 24th\, Observation Knob proudly welcomes the Portuguese Water Dog Trials to the park. The Water Dog club will be set up in the swim area of the park. During this time campers and outside guests are welcome and encouraged to visit the area and check out the dogs. However\, for the upcoming weekend\, the club has politely asked that foot traffic only be permitted past the yellow swim area gates. Golf carts and vehicles will not be permitted in the area during the time of this private event. Anyone is welcome to park golf carts and/or vehicles outside of the swim area gates and walk in. $3.00 per car entry Fee to Park in effect as normal.

SUMMARY:Exchange Place Living History Farm: Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – People in the Tri-Cities and the Appalachian Highlands have grown up with Exchange Place\,\nand especially with its seasonal celebrations. And now\, one of the oldest fairs of its kind in our region will be\nentering its second half-century\, as Exchange Place Living History Farm holds its Fall Folk Arts Festival\nfor the 51st time. A joyous celebration of pioneer arts and crafts and the harvest season\, the festival will take\nplace on Saturday\, September 23\, from 10 am until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 24 from noon\nuntil 5 pm. Admission is $5\, with those under 12 admitted free. As always\, proceeds go towards the\ncare of the farm’s animals and the continued restoration and preservation of the site\, located at 4812\nOrebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.\nBoth sides of Orebank Road will be filled with sales\, foods and demonstrations as festival vendors offer a wide\narray of traditional folk arts\, along with plants\, local foods and seasonal crafts. Artisans\, including\nwoodworkers\, potters\, authors and artists\, will display and sell their work. Unique crafts will be found\neverywhere – leather goods; a variety of soaps\, including one made from donkey milk; toasty warm hats and\nmittens made from alpaca fleece; handcrafted greeting cards; and many knitted and crocheted items. There\nwill also be local honey\, goat milk cheeses\, homemade jams\, jellies and breads\, and much more.\nA focus of the Fall Folk Arts Festival is on demonstrations of fall activities that might have been found on a mid-\nnineteenth century Northeast Tennessee farm. History will come alive as visitors see sorghum being milled and\ncooked on Saturday\, with Maggie T. Mule pulling the mill\, while Sunday’s activities will consist of details about\nthe process of making sorghum. (Pure sorghum syrup\, made fresh this year by the Guenther family of Muddy\nPond\, TN\, will be on sale\, as long as supplies last.) Elsewhere on the farm volunteers will demonstrate other\nskills such as blacksmithing and chair caning.\nGuilds around the region continue to teach and perpetuate folk arts and handicrafts. The Overmountain\nWeavers Guild began at the first Fall Festival 51 years ago\, and this partnership continues at the Burow\nMuseum as they demonstrate the arts of spinning and weaving. Visitors can see curtains for the historic site\nbeing woven on the restored Rocker Beater loom\, learn the story of the weavers behind the antique drafts that\ncame with the first loom gifted to Exchange Place\, and see the three top award winners from the OMWG\nAnniversary Challenge. Guests may also weave a part of an antique draft themselves. Guild members will be\navailable to show\, and give more information\, on the sale of antique and vintage spinning and weaving\nequipment. Another long tradition is the Tri State Basket Guild offering the opportunity for youth to make their\nown baskets\, with proceeds going to feed the resident animals. In addition\, Chapter 162 of the National\nAssociation of Watch and Clock Collectors will return with a host of antique clocks and advice on how to restore\nold timepieces Thanks to the generosity of Rod Groenewold of Kingsport\, one of his clocks will be available at\nhis booth as part of the Silent Auction.\nIn the kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will be baking sweet potato biscuits and\nhoecakes to go with that fresh sorghum syrup\, as well as other foods common in the antebellum era. The\ncostumed Junior Apprentices will not only be assisting in this fun task but are also a part of demonstrations\naround the farmstead\, including gourd crafting near the Cook’s Cabin and rug braiding on the Main House front\nporch. Some of their handcrafted items\, including tulip poplar bark baskets and hand-forged knives\, will be\nincluded in the Silent Auction to help raise funds for their program.\nA special shopping opportunity this fall is the result of volunteers cleaning out the John Gaines Store prior to its \ncontinuing restoration\, along with corners of other buildings. Many of these "treasures" — such as a hand-\ncrafted mountain dulcimer — and other items found that are no longer used\, do not fit the site's 19th century\nfocus and will be offered to visitors in the Silent Auction\, held in the Roseland Visitor's Center and in the\nBaaaa..rn Sale near the 1910 Barn. Historic details of items will be included in the display.\nA highlight of this festival will be the offering of two major workshops. On Saturday\, master crafter Heather\nAshworth will teach two classes in broom-making. Reprising the program she offered two years ago\, Ms.\nAshworth will offer classes in the Roseland building from 10 am until 12:30 pm\, and another from 1:30 pm\nuntil 4 pm. She will supply all materials as she teaches students how to bind two whisk hand brooms\, using\nbroom corn and colorful cord. The cost will be $70 and will include all materials\, plus admission to the Fall Folk\nArts Festival. Students must register for either class in advance by contacting her at\nhello.heatherashworth@gmail.com.\nThe other workshop will be held on Sunday. Back by popular demand\, Jennifer Hanlon has scheduled a\nnew needle felting class; this year’s project is to make a 2D/3D pumpkin refrigerator magnet. The workshop\nwill begin at noon\, also in Roseland\, and will continue for about three hours. The cost of this workshop will\nvary ($25 to $45)\, depending on how many supplies you would like Ms. Hanlon to furnish. More information\,\nincluding registration\, can be found at www.hanlonscreativecorner.com.\nChildren's "chores and play" will be scattered around the farmstead\, allowing the young (along with those\nyouthful in mind and spirit!) a chance to experience what it was like to be a child in the 19th century. Thanks\nto volunteers and community groups\, a wide range of children's hands-on activities will be available\, including\nmaking a rope with the Boy Scouts. As always\, visitors will have the opportunity to wander over to the 1851\nbarn and meet some of those animals who live there all year long\, including our donkey\, cow\, and cats\, plus\nthe sheep\, chickens\, and pigs found in various other locations. There will also be one vendor bringing baby\nchicks to the festival!\nA large variety of foods and drinks will be available throughout the weekend for snacks and lunch to eat on\nsite\, as well as food items to take home. And all of this will feature a backdrop of excellent live music\,\nprovided by local and regional artists. (A tentative schedule of performances\, always subject to last-minute\nchanges\, is listed at the bottom of this release.)\nThe official countdown to Witches Wynd begins each year with the Fall Folk Arts Festival. Exchange Place’s\nunique storytelling adventure will be offered live again this year\, and tickets will first be made available during\nthe Festival. The 31st Witches Wynd is Friday\, October 20\, and Saturday\, October 21\, and tickets must\nbe purchased in advance. Historically\, this unique blend of macabre tales and ballads sells out quickly since\nonly a limited number of spaces are available\, so we encourage people to purchase them during the Fall\nFestival. DESCRIPTION:September 7\, 2023 (Bristol TN/VA) – Bristol heats up as the Bristol PepperFest returns Saturday\, September 23rd\, from 11 AM – 4 PM. Located on 6th Street in Downtown Bristol\, this free event\, coordinated by Believe in Bristol\, will feature culinary demonstrations\, hot pepper plant sales\, sauces\, food trucks and other “spicy” vendors\, a beer garden\, and live music. \nBristol PepperFest will also include a cornhole tournament fundraiser for Believe in Bristol. Registration for the double elimination tournament is a minimum donation of $25 per team and teams must register online in advance of the event at www.believeinbristol.org/pepperfest. \nAlso returning this year\, Quaker Steak & Lube presents their Triple Atomic Wing Challenge\, giving eight contestants the opportunity to win prizes if they are the first to finish their plate of extreme wings.
