SUMMARY:Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center Announces Fall Open House
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Registration will run through Saturday\, August 21 for most classes.  Students can register online at mckinneycenter.com. \n“The Open House is a good time to meet your instructor and to really see what you will get out of taking a class here at the McKinney Center\,” stated McKinney Center Director Theresa Hammons. “There is something for everyone here at the McKinney Center.  Most of our classes are for beginners\, but one of the great things about our offerings is that the class sizes are small\, usually no more than 8 to 10 students. If you are more or less skilled\, the instructor has time to work with you one on one.” \nArt\, music\, writing\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this fall for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop the understanding and experimentation with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and processes.  For older elementary-aged students\, courses are taught to build their skills as artists including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level.  Classes in writing\, film\, music and dance are also available for this age range including Art Adventures\, Creative Construction\, Homeschool Art\, Kids N Clay\, Young Potters\, Let’s Make a TV Show\, Mosaics\, Tap\, Watercolor and Guitar.  Offerings for teens and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music and various workshops. \nThe one-day workshop options for the fall semester are extensive and include Introduction to the Zentangle Method of Drawing\, Glass Fusion workshops\, several ceramic wheel workshops\, several ceramic decorating and design workshops.  Students with a group of six or more can schedule a private workshop. \nScholarships are available for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Students or parents can fill out applications online at mckinneycenter.com or email Hammons for more information.   \nThe McKinney Center is open to the public Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Staff encourage all visitors to be at home at the McKinney Center; take a class\, participate in an exhibition\, come to a lecture\, volunteer your time\, attend a workshop\, or set up an easel on the grounds and paint.  Please check the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School Facebook or Instagram pages throughout the year for information about exciting programs and events.

Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” \n###

It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 for its historic architectural significance. Built by Southern Railway in 1906\, the depot had been privately leased since 1959\, but was situated on land owned by Southern successor Norfolk Southern\, who notified the building’s owners of its plans to demolish the historic structure because the lease had expired. The owners of the building gifted it to the town of Jonesborough\, and it was moved from Chuckey to Jonesborough. It now serves as a museum. Although the railroad is still prominent in Jonesborough\, the town’s depot was razed in the 1970s. \n### \nAbout the Chuckey Depot Museum: The mission of the Chuckey Depot Museum focuses on regional railroads in its exhibits\, like the Southern\, Clinchfield\, and East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. This exhibit gives the Museum a chance to showcase items that come from all over the country\, including a map of railroads in Ohio and a stock certificate for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. The Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, Tennessee\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. The Chuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 South 2nd Avenue. For more information\, please call 423.753.1010. The Depot’s regular hours are Thursday-Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society. \nAbout the Town of Jonesborough: A unique 18th century town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee\, Jonesborough’s natural beauty\, charming architecture\, and storytelling heritage have attracted visitors worldwide. Stay a day\, a week or forever\, and create your own stories in beautiful Historic Jonesborough. Visit www.jonesborough.com for more information.
