Join Slade Nakoff as he demonstrates hat\nmaking during the 18 th Century and its impact on the edge of colonial society. Meet in the park\nvisitor’s center. Duration 30 minutes.\n11:00 a.m. “Finger Weaving” – Finger weaving is a technique that has been used by Native\nAmerican groups for thousands of years. Join Andrea Price as she works on finger weaving a\nstrap and shares the history of the technique. Meet at the Carter Mansion. Duration: 30 minutes.\n1:30 p.m. “Creek Crawl” – Cool off from the summer heat at Sycamore Shoals! Join Andrea\nPrice as she guides a crawl into a creek off the Watauga River in order to check the water’s\nquality\, identify important species\, and beat the heat. Please bring a towel as well as clothing and\nfootwear you would not mind getting wet. Meet at the park visitor’s center. Docudrama\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRESERVING OUR HERITAGE\n\nThe Tri Cities Civil War Round Table is hosting a two Act Docudrama entitled “The Men and The Memoirs” a play starring two living history scholars — Curt Fields as Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Warren Brown as Mark Twain — telling the story of how these two men became fast friends and influenced the course of American literature(Jilton). The event will be held at 7:00 p.m.\, on July 10th\, Kingsport Renaissance Center Theatre Kingsport\, TN\n\n\n“The Men and The Memoirs”\n\nThe Tri Cities Civil War Round Table\,\nis hosting this annual Fun Fest event. Each year the attendance grows and the theatre swells. In fact last year the lower level of the theatre was packed and 3/4 of the balcony. Tickets will be available at the door or at the Fun Fest ticket office.\n\n“In the spring of 1884\, Ulysses S. Grant heeded the advice of Mark Twain and finally agreed to write his memoirs. Little did Grant or Twain realize that this seemingly straightforward decision would profoundly alter both their lives. Over the next 15 months\, as the two men became close friends and intimate collaborators\, Grant raced against the spread of cancer to compose a triumphant account of his life and times\, while Twain struggled to complete and publish his greatest novel\, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” (Jilton).\nThe reason Grant let Twain talk him into writing his memoirs was simple: He was bankrupt and needed the money. Plus he feared he would leave his wife\, Julia\, with heavy debts when he died. That was something he would not do” (Jilton).\n“Twain promised Grant princely returns in exchange for the right to edit and publish the book — and though the writer’s own finances were tottering\, he kept his word to the general and his family. Mortally ill and battling debts\, magazine editors and a constant crush of reporters\, Grant fought bravely to get the story of his life and his Civil War victories down on paper. Twain\, meanwhile\, staked all his hopes\, both financial and literary\, on the tale of a ragged boy and a runaway slave that he had been unable to finish for decades” (Jilton).\n\nFields and Brown will bring this emotional story to life on the stage at the Renaissance Arts Center. The show runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets will be available at the Fun Fest Store beginning June 23 until noon on July 10. DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on July 20th at 6:30 pm as we welcome Dr. William Kennedy. \n\nDr. Kennedy’s talk is entitled “Jonesborough’s Historic Porches and Bay Windows: Form\, Function\, and Flowers.” He will be speaking about the architectural\, as well as the social function historic porches have served in Jonesborough’s history. The program will begin at 6:30 pm in the Jonesborough Visitors Center. The program is free and open to the public! \n\nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month. Walk among historical characters and hear their\nvaried reactions to the Declaration\, from fear of war to the hope of a brighter future. \nThe celebration takes place on Saturday\, July 22 nd as members of the Washington County\nRegiment of North Carolina Militia\, host living history organization at Sycamore Shoals State\nHistoric Park\, will be garrisoned at Fort Watauga. The militia muster will include a myriad of\nactivities allowing guests the opportunity to step back in time and experience daily life on the\ncolonial frontier in 1776. The highlight of the day will be a special reading of the Declaration of\nIndependence given inside Fort Watauga at 1:00 in the afternoon. Ongoing activities will include\ncolonial games\, Revolutionary War soldiers display\, life at Fort Watauga\, and much more. Also\,\ndon’t forget to visit our award-winning museum and shop in our book and gift store while you’re\nenjoying the day. \nExtend your Independence celebrations and bring the entire family out for a day full of\nhistory\, patriotism\, education\, and family fun. Regiment will give a\ndemonstration of flintlock weaponry and 18th century battlefield tactics.\n11:30 – 18 th Century Firearms: Join Seasonal Interpreter Slade Nakoff for a closer look at the\ntypes of firearms used during America’s War for Independence.\n12:00 – Independence Day Through Time: From Declaration readings and cannon fire to\nparades and concerts\, join Seasonal Interpreter Andrea Price as she shares how the celebration of\nIndependence Day has changed over the last 247 years.\n12:30 – Kids Militia Drill: Attention all kids of the settlement! Fall in with Ranger Taylor for\ndrill and training for the defense of the settlement.\n1:00 – Reading of the Declaration of Independence: Join the Watauga settlers as the document\ndeclaring our separation from Great Britain finally arrives on the frontier and is read publicly\ninside Fort Watauga.\n2:00 – Bayonet Competition: Witness some friendly rivalry between the gentlemen of the\nmilitia as they hone their skill with this 18 th century weapon.\n2:30 – Ladies’ Skillet Toss: The ladies of the settlement gather to test their skills of strength and\naccuracy.
