DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. DESCRIPTION:John Anderson Acoustic\n\n\n\n\nAs a child growing up in Apopka\, Florida\, John Anderson remembers humming along to the tone of his father’s boat motor\, possibly igniting a spark that led to the start of his music career. Anderson performed solo around Florida before moving to Nashville where he worked in construction. Ironically\, he was on the roofing crew for the new Grand Ole Opry House before landing a contract with Warner Bros. Records. \nJohn started cranking out memorable hits such as “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)\,” “Wild and Blue\,” “I Just Came Home to Count the Memories\,” “1959\,” “Black Sheep\,” and\, of course\, his signature hit “Swingin’.” His career cooled off but saw a resurgence when he signed with BNA in 1991 and scored a comeback hit with chart-topping “Straight Tequila Night” from his acclaimed Seminole Wind album. In 1993\, Anderson was awarded the Academy of Country Music Career Achievement award. That momentum carried him into the 2000s\, giving him 60 charting country singles in four consecutive decades.

Attendees will also place votes for their favorite libations and receive a souvenir glass. \nReturning for its 11th year is the Racks by the Tracks 10K and 5K Race/Walk presented by Powell Valley National Bank. Along with the fun environment\, one of the appealing draws of this race is that its course is considered the fastest course in the region due to how consistently flat it is. This year’s race course will feature a new route\, giving runners the opportunity to run on different sections of one of Kingsport’s greatest treasures\, the Greenbelt. For runners seeking a challenge and a unique test of stamina\, they can sign-up for the Boss Hog Challenge\, in which they run both the 10K & 5K races and receive a Boss Hog Challenger gift for participating. DESCRIPTION:One of the region’s most popular summer concert series\, Twilight Alive\, returns to downtown Kingsport tomorrow\, Friday\, May 31st\, helping kick off summer in Kingsport. \n\nThis year’s concert series includes eight weeks of free live music in the downtown area\, including our annual Red\, White and BOOM Celebration on Saturday\, July 6. \n\nFriday night concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the 100 block of Broad Street and are all free events. \n\nOpening the Twilight Alive Series on the Cardinal Glass Industries Stage is Nashville Yacht Club Band. Nashville Yacht Club Band\, aka NYC\, is an 8-piece tribute to the pop and r&b sounds of the 1970s and 80s. With dazzling\, note-perfect renditions of your favorite smooth party hits\, audiences can expect a unique collection of vintage AM Gold\, roller disco classics and timeless dance floor staples performed by some of Music City’s most captivating players and singers! \n\nThe Twilight Alive Summer Concert Series lineup is: Nashville Yacht Club Band (May 31)\, Smokey Jones and The 3 Dollar Pistols (June 7)\, Lisa and the E-Lusion Band (June 14)\, Departure\, The Journey Tribute Band (June 21)\, KISS ARMY (June 28)\, Flatline Band (July 12) and Conch Republic (July 19 at 8 p.m. as part of the Fun Fest kickoff). \n\nRed\, White and BOOM features The Marshall Tucker Band\, with openers The Cleverlys and Donnie and the Dry Heavers on Saturday\, July 6 beginning at 5 p.m. This event occurs on Main Street in the Centennial Park area\, ending with fireworks at approximately 9:45 p.m. \n\nBring your own chair. Enjoy dinner at a downtown restaurant and support small businesses. A select number of food and drink vendors will be on site and beer will be available to purchase. The 100 block of Broad Street closes at 5 p.m. to traffic and you can set-up your chair or blanket in the street beginning at this time.
