SUMMARY:Folsom Prison Experience

A the time\, Cash’s personal life was strained\, the hits had slowed\, and studio sessions were going nowhere. So he took a gamble no one expected by recording a live album inside the maximum-security walls of Folsom Prison. \nWhat sounded like a simple plan unraveled into a day packed with nerves\, tight security\, and behind-the-scenes chaos. But when Cash and the Tennessee Three stepped onstage\, that pressure erupted into one of the most important performances in American music history. \nThis production puts you inside that story. From intake to roll call\, you’ll serve your “sentence” as an inmate and feel the weight of the guards\, the presence of the Warden\, and the energy of a captive audience. \nStarring Jay Ernest of Church of Cash as Johnny Cash\, with powerhouse performances from Kat Perkins\, Brad Erickson\, Dan Hopman\, Ryan Nelson\, Zach “Poppa Bear” Norton\, Bronson Bergeson\, and more\, this cast brings the full lineup of June Carter\, the Statler Brothers\, Carl Perkins\, and the Tennessee Three to life. Not to be confused with a tribute show\, Folsom Prison Experience allows you to spend a night inside the most infamous concert ever staged. Get ready for a one-of-a-kind journey through music history.

SUMMARY:Songwriters Circle
DESCRIPTION:2026 Dates: Monthly\, every 2nd Saturday\n\nJanuary 10\nFebruary 14\nMarch 14\nApril 11 (SHOWCASE)\nMay 9\nJune 13\nJuly 12\nAugust 8\nSeptember 12 (TBD)\nOctober 11\nNovember 14 (SHOWCASE)\nDecember 12\n\nTime: 2-5 p.m. ET\nLocation: The Learning Center\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum\nCost: Free and open to the public\, donations encouraged at quarterly showcases\nIn partnership with Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia\, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum will host a monthly Songwriters Circle every 2nd Saturday\, 2-5 p.m. ET\, in the Learning Center.  Beginners\, experienced songwriters\, and aspiring songwriters are invited to share songs\, brainstorm ideas\, and encourage each other to keep writing. There is no fee to participate.\nAt the end of each session\, the group will choose three prompts to inspire ideas for the following month. The prompts may be objects\, phrases\, feelings\, colors\, senses\, or any other topic. Writers may use those topics to help them write a song or two to share for the following session. Songwriters do not have to play an instrument in order to participate. \nSongwriters Circle is an opportunity to perform\, workshop\, and network with other artists\, with an emphasis on clarity and telling a story. The goals of the group are to encourage songwriting\, introduce songwriting shows to audiences in the region\, and enlighten the public about the craft of songwriting and its value as an art form. \nFans of music and songwriting are welcome to sit in for a listen at no cost. \n\nAbout Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia\n\nSongwriters of Highlands Appalachia is led by Mary Munsey\, a local musician and educator\, recently retired from Virginia Highlands Community College. The program offers a great deal of flexibility in its format for attendees\, with varied songwriting interests and abilities. Some of the attendees play instruments and some are curious about songwriting and the process. Lyrics can sometimes only pare up with others that play instruments and put music with the words. Some writers don’t sing\, but enjoy hearing others perform their songs. Some of the performances can be a cappella. Some members of the group write one to three songs between sessions and some write more. Sometimes as busy as life gets\, writers don’t get to write new material between meetings. We don’t pressure anyone to write\, and we don’t criticize anyone. We treat each other with respect. We don’t discuss politics\, use profanity\, or write antagonistic lyrics. \n \n\nThe focus is not on the beauty of the voice or skill of the instrumentation\, but the clearness of the pronunciation and the effect of the song. We work on making sure the audience can hear every word. We are not professional musicians but we are creators of musical stories and that is the beauty of it. The sessions are open to anyone visiting the museum. Genres are not specified. Songs can be instrumental\, folk\, country\, bluegrass\, Americana\, blues\, humorous\, jazz\, R&B\, electronic\, and even pop\, to name a few. Writers are allowed to bring CDs for sale and to accept tips after performances. \nAs an extension of this program\, each quarter we invite songwriters to attend “Writers-in-the-Round” or WITR concerts. WITR consists of three to five writers together in a circle or on stage. Each writer introduces themselves\, gives the title of their song\, and then sings it with or without accompaniment. Discussion will follow concerning the origins of the song\, how they wrote it\, and the song’s inspiration\, along with any questions from the audience. \n\nTo learn more about Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia\, visit the website at HighlandsAppalachia.org.

SUMMARY:Tales of Our 250th
DESCRIPTION:Tales of Our 250th continues at the Jackson Theatre on August 20th. The Declaration of Independence\, the Revolutionary War\, and the US Constitution did not guarantee freedom to everyone in the United States. It would take the Civil War\, almost 100 years later\, to end enslavement in this country. At the same time there were enslaved people\, there were also free people of color and a strong abolitionist movement both nationally and in Washington County\, TN. Learn more about Elihu Embree and his newspaper The Emancipator\, the first publication in the world dedicated solely to abolitionism\, and it was printed on Main Street\, Jonesborough.\n\nThe evening will include a performance of the award-winning play Nancy by Anne G’Fellers Mason. Commissioned by the Heritage Alliance\, Nancy tells the story of Elihu Embree’s enslaved woman and her family. The one act play follows a year in the woman’s life\, from January 1820 when Embree wrote his will to January1821 when his will was read before the Washington County court. In his will\, Embree tried to free Nancy and her five children\, but were his wishes carried out? What was Nancy feeling and thinking during this time? The play is based on primary research from the Washington County Archives. Following the play\, there will be a concert with the Friendship Baptist Church Mass Choir under the direction of Phedelma Hancock. Friendship Baptist Church began in 1916 in Johnson City\, when 8 veterans at the Soldiers’ Home decided to form a church.\nThere will be a special school presentation of The Road to Freedom program at 10:00 am on August 20th. The school program will include the play Nancy and a drumming/percussion workshop with Corey Hodge from the Langston Centre. If you are interested in booking seats for the school performance\, contact the Jackson Theatre directly.\n\nCelebrate America’s 250th birthday with the McKinney Center\, the Heritage Alliance\, and StoryTown at the Jackson Theatre. The event will start at 7:00 pm\, and the house opens at 6:00 pm. This series is Pay What You Can but go ahead and reserve your seats at Jonesborough.com/tickets. You can also reserve tickets by calling the Jackson Theatre’s box office at 423-788-4909 or the Visitor’s Center at 423-753-1010.\n\nThis programming is supported in part by the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial and the Historic Jonesborough Arts Foundation.\n#####\n\nAbout The Jackson Theatre: The Jackson Theatre is a fully restored theatre in the heart of historic downtown Jonesborough.
