SUMMARY:48th Annual Jonesborough Days
DESCRIPTION:Tennessee’s Oldest Town will celebrate the 48th Annual Jonesborough Days Festival on June 29 through July 1 with family activities\, an exciting music line-up\, handmade arts and crafts\, patriotic parade\, fireworks\, storytelling and much more! \nThe 2018 Jonesborough Days Festival will begin Friday\, June 29 at 10 a.m. and host the Annual Kick Off Dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. with music and more until 10 p.m. The festival will continue on Saturday\, June 30 at 10 a.m. with the parade marching through downtown and festivities continuing until 10 p.m. On Sunday\, July 1 activities start at noon and the event wraps up with the annual fireworks display at 10 p.m. Admission to the festival is free and open to the public. \nThe festival has been voted as one of the top events in the southeast and is known for its community patriotism and nostalgic atmosphere. Various entertainment and activities will take place throughout the historic district on all three days. Get your tickets now for the popular Kick Off Dinner on Friday evening at the International Storytelling Center. A low country shrimp boil is on the menu with entertainment by the Jonesborough Novelty Band and lots of family fun all for $15/person. \nDoc’s Front Porch will feature a variety of storytellers and musicians on the plaza at the International Storytelling Center during the day. The Main Stage will also feature entertainment each evening including headliners The Beach Nite Band\, Johnny Cash NOW and the Music City Stones. Shop over 70 vendors\, showcasing local handmade crafters with a variety of wares. And of course\, there will be a variety of great festival foods with everything from BBQ and tacos and of course funnel cakes being offered. \nDiscovery Park\, located behind the Storytelling Center\, will offer even more activities for children and their families this year. There you will find lots of hands-on ways to experience activities only found in Jonesborough including a taste of what they offer at the McKinney Center for the Arts classes\, Oak Hill School sessions complete with a schoolmarm\, heritage games and an archaeological dig provided by the Heritage Alliance and more. Formally known as the Collegians\, the Beach Nite Band combines a summer feel to popular R&B\, soul\, disco blues\, classic pop and boogie music guaranteed to appeal to all ages.  Known for their “Carolina Beach Music\,” they offer a wide variety of music styles for dancing and listening\, along with comedic showmanship from the group’s four members. Their performance will continue until 10 p.m. and is sponsored by BathFitters. \nSaturday evening\, we pay tribute to everyone’s favorite man in black as Johnny Cash NOW\, a Johnny Cash Tribute Band from Georgia joins the entertainment lineup from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Johnny and June Cash along with Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three played during the Jonesborough Days Festival in 1973. 45 years later\, we will commemorate that concert and welcome back his music that every generation has grown to love. The Music City Stones were founded by lead singer\, Louis Lee Napolitano\, and have been Rockin’ the Stones tunes since 2004. This concert is sponsored by Wolfe Development. DESCRIPTION:For 10 days every summer\, Abingdon is completely transformed\, playing host to one of the biggest and best arts festivals in the southeast. The celebration extends beyond the downtown street festival\, though\, with opportunities to play outdoors in nature\, attend classes and workshops\, time travel to Abingdon’s colonial past with living historians\, or even ride in a vintage biplane. \nNamed “Best Art Event” in the region by readers of Virginia Living magazine\, the Virginia Highlands Festival offers activities and entertainment for the whole family. \nThe 10 day festival runs July 28 to August 6\, 2017. For a full listing of events\, visit vahighlandsfestival.org. \nAnchored by an antiques market and an award-winning juried arts and crafts show\, the Festival includes live music\, historical re-enactments\, fine art and photography competitions\, performances\, creative writing workshops\, guided nature hikes\, and numerous activities for kids. \nHistory \nRobert Porterfield\, founder of both the Virginia Highlands Festival and the famed Barter Theatre\, held the first Festival in 1949 at the Martha Washington Inn. His purpose was to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of this area. The Festival\, over the past six decades\, has grown in scope to represent all of Southwest Virginia. Now it not only preserves the arts\, crafts and skills that developed in this region\, but also imports talented artists and performers from all over the USA and the world for the enjoyment of area residents and visitors. \nVisitor  Information \nHeld in Historic Abingdon and the surrounding area\, the annual Virginia Highlands Festival offers juried fine art and crafts\, antiques\, performing and literary arts\, music\, local history\, the great outdoors\, and fun for kids of all ages! \nThe juried fine art show and many of the concerts take place in downtown Abingdon on the Barter Green (110 West Main St.).
