SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Deaf Storytelling Concert
DESCRIPTION:Deaf Storytelling Concert premier in Jonesborough \nThe McKinney Center and the Communication Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH) will host a Deaf Storytelling Concert for and with the Deaf community on Saturday\, April 1 at 7 p.m. at the McKinney Center\, located at 103 Franklin Avenue. Nationally acclaimed deaf storyteller Peter Cook will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Cook is also a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a Master’s degree in Storytelling. \nThis concert will bring members from the deaf community who will share their stories\, and will also be voice interpreted for audiences\, in order for both deaf and hearing individuals attending the concert will be able to understand the stories. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nThis project began a year ago\, as the McKinney Center and the CCDHH collected and archived stories from the deaf community in the region. This project was coordinated by McKinney Center Outreach Programming Director Jules Corriere and the CCDHH’s Andrew Metcalf. Story collectors were paired with storytellers as well as an interpreter. The interviews were recorded on video and audio\, so that a transcription of the interviews could be made. Nearly twenty hours of interviews were captured and over 600 pages of transcripts were archived. \n“I’ve been collecting stories since moving to Jonesborough nearly ten years ago. I’ve always been intentional about getting stories from underserved groups\, for instance\, our veterans\,” says Corriere. “I realized\, in all these years\, we have not gone into the deaf community to collect their stories.” \nMetcalf was eager to be part of this project and served as one of its lead interpreters. “The Deaf community has a rich history of storytelling\, and it is only fitting that their stories be given the spotlight\,” says Metcalf. “The visual aspect of these stories only enhances the experience\, even if you don’t know sign language.” \n“This sort of flips the script for traditional performances\,” says Corriere. “Usually\, the one doing signing is off to the side. This time\, the people signing will be in the spotlight\, center stage and the vocal interpreter will be the one offset.” \nThis concert\, which will run approximately an hour in duration\, will be hosted and emceed by Cook. He is an internationally renowned Deaf performing artist whose works incorporate American Sign Language\, pantomime\, storytelling\, acting and movement. Cook has traveled extensively around the country and abroad as a part of Flying Words Project. He has been featured nationally in festivals such as the Jonesborough National Storytelling Festival\, Oklahoma City Winter Tales\, Illinois Storytelling Festival\, Indiana Hoosier Storytelling Festival\, Eugene\, Oregon Multi-Cultural Festival and Deaf Way II\, as well as on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. Cook was invited to the White House to join the National Book Festival in 2003. Internationally\, he has worked with Deaf storytellers and poets in Sweden\, Norway\, Denmark and Japan. Cook lives in Chicago and teaches in the ASL-English Interpretation Department at Columbia College\, where he received the 1997 Excellence in Teaching award. Cook will work directly with the local deaf storytellers to help prepare them for this concert. \nFor more information\, contact Corriere at 423.753.0562 or Metcalf through video phone at 423.218.1215. This event is sponsored by a grant from the Tennessee Disability Coalition. \n### \nAbout the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington: The mission of the McKinney Center at Booker T. SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Donald Davis Storytelling Concert
DESCRIPTION:Historic Jonesborough hosts two-night concert featuring storyteller Donald Davis        \n\nDonald Davis\, one of America’s favorite master storytellers\, is coming to the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center on April 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. The two-night concert will feature Davis telling different stories each evening. \n\nEnjoy two nights of stories from Donald Davis with general admission each evening being $15. A special group rate for 15 or more people is available for $12 per person. \n\nDavis was born in a Southern Appalachian Mountain world that was rich in stories. “I didn’t learn stories\, I just absorbed them\,” Davis says as he recounts tales learned from a family of traditional storytellers who lived on the same Western North Carolina land since 1781. \n\nDavis’ resume boasts numerous experiences including Davidson College\, Duke University Divinity School\, a retired Methodist minister and former chairperson of the board of Directors for the National Storytelling Association. He is a favorite at the National Storytelling Festival and has also served as a featured teller at the Smithsonian Institute\, the World’s Fair as well as festivals and concerts throughout the United States and the world. \n\nFor Donald Davis\, storytelling is a way of giving and living life. He invites each listener to come along\, pull deep inside for one’s own stories and personally share the common experiences that celebrate the creative spirit. For Donald Davis\, storytelling “is not what I do for a living\, but it is how I do all that I do while I am living.” \n\nAttendees can enjoy live music starting at 7 p.m. \n\nDonald Davis will host a meet and greet after the storytelling. \n\nFor tickets or more information\, call 423.753.1010 or visit Jonesborough.com/tickets. \n\n### \n  \nAbout the Town of Jonesborough: A unique 18th century town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee\, Jonesborough’s natural beauty\, charming architecture\, and storytelling heritage have attracted visitors worldwide. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music
DESCRIPTION:The Birthplace of Country Music Museum is no stranger to History Happy Hour\, and this time they will be sharing about their brand new exhibit “I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music.” This exhibit was years in the making.  Dr. Rodgers explains\, “Old-time music is described and experienced in different ways and for different purposes\, but at its heart\, old-time is mountain folk music with strong ties to Appalachia and the diverse peoples who have called it home. Women have always been central to old-time music — in the home and on the stage\, and as instrumentalists and singers\, preservationists\, activists\, promoters\, and cultural memory keepers. Join the Birthplace of Country Music Museum staff as they introduce their new special exhibit and explore the stories of the women who have been integral to old-time music.” The program will begin at 6:30 pm in the Chester Inn Museum’s Board Room. The program is free and open to the public! \n\nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month.
