Duration 30 minutes. \n12:30 p.m. “Cemetery Symbolism” – Death and mourning practices differ across customs and\ntime periods\, but many aspects have carried over into current tradition. Join Andrea Price as she\ndiscusses funerary and mourning practices common in the 18th century while searching for\nsymbols in the Carter Family Cemetery. Meet at the Carter Mansion. Duration: 30 minutes.\n2:30 p.m. “Finger Weaving” – Finger weaving is a technique that has been used by Native\nAmerican groups for thousands of years. SUMMARY:Heritage Alliance: Summer Social
DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Alliance is hosting a Summer Social in the Old Jonesborough Cemetery on Saturday\, August 12th from 6:00-8:00 pm. “It used to be a common thing for families and friends to gather in the cemetery and picnic\, share stories of their loved ones\, and relax\,” shares Executive Director Anne Mason. “There was nothing odd about it. Cemeteries are sacred spaces\, but they’re also public spaces\, and we want people to come and tour the cemetery and learn more about the community they live in.” \n\nTour guides and people in period costume will be on hand to answer questions and share history from the Rocky Hill and College Hill cemeteries. Ice cream will be available for $2.00 a scoop courtesy of MOM’s Ice Cream with Munchies on Main. Ice cream sales will benefit the historic preservation of the cemeteries. You can also help hand crank your own ice cream for $2.00. Parking is available at the First Baptist Church located at 201 E Main Street in their side parking lot. There is no parking at the cemetery. The cemetery is a short walk up from the church parking lot. We’ll also have a golf cart shuttle available throughout the evening from the First Baptist Church parking lot. \n\nDuring the evening\, the Heritage Alliance will unveil a temporary marker honoring the victims of the 1873 cholera epidemic and marking the mass grave from that historic event. The mass grave was re-discovered this March by Heritage Alliance volunteer Gordon Edwards and Dr. Robert Jones with the Tilted Tavern Animal Sanctuary. They used ground-penetrating radar to locate the mass grave. The cholera epidemic moved through Jonesborough from mid-July to August of 1873\, 150 years ago exactly. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on August 17th at 6:30 pm as we welcome Mr. Frank Collins. \n\nMr. Collins’ presentation is “Historic Jonesborough – Image Overlays using Google Earth Pro\, DeedMapper\, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps\, and the earliest records of Jonesborough”.  He will be demonstrating how to overlay historic records\, maps\, and land plats onto Google Earth satellite images.  The maps and plats include the 1796 Plan of Jonesborough\, as well as Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps (1888 through 1939).  Mr. Collins will also show work done with DeedMapper software that uses land record metes & bounds to create land plats.  Two of the first Jonesborough land records contain hand drawn plats that will be illuminated using Google Earth Pro.  Using the Sanborn Fire Maps and other records with Google Earth Pro’s transparency function will allow the audience to compare current structures with those that existed in 1888\, 1939 and other years. The program will begin at 6:30 pm in the International Storytelling Center. The program is free and open to the public! \n\nFrank Collins is a local historian and retired Statistician and Program Manager.  Frank and wife Amy Collins live in the old Jonesborough High School\, now known as Academy Hill.  Frank researched and published a website for Academy Hill at www.academyhill.us. \n\nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month. The full schedule is available on the Chester Inn’s Facebook page and the Heritage Alliance’s website. DESCRIPTION:Cherokee Heritage Day \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park will host the 3 rd Annual Cherokee Heritage Day on\nSaturday\, August 26 th from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. Sycamore Shoals is forever linked with the\nrich traditions and influence of the Native Cherokee. Join us for a day devoted to sharing\nCherokee history and culture through traditional arts and historical presentations. In addition to\nthe scheduled programs there will be demonstrations of traditional skills such as basketmaking\,\nfinger weaving\, beadwork\, woodcarving\, and much more. \nInside the park Visitor Center will be demonstrations of contemporary Cherokee crafts. Sharon\nMcCoy will demonstrate beadwork\, Ray McCoy will be doing woodcarving\, and Toni Tahquette\nwill be demonstrating finger weaving. \nOutside the Visitor Center\, we are hosting a variety of Cherokee craftspeople demonstrating\ntraditional arts. Make sure to visit inside the fort to see Ramona Lossie as she creates beautiful\nbaskets. Jimmy Harlan will be making and demonstrating the use of the blowgun. Outside the\nfort and under the trees will be Ernest Grant demonstrating wampum jewelry and bandolier bag\nmaking\, while Nancy Pheasant is carving shells. Francilia Littlejohn will be making moccasins\,\nand Allen Fugate will be doing silversmithing. \nAlso\, located outside the fort\, you can visit a circa 1828 Cherokee campsite featuring a wedge\ntent for sleeping and a lean-to kitchen area complete with period travel kitchen with wrought iron\nfire utensils and dining items. Visitors can experience campfire cooking and learn more about\nthis significant period in Cherokee history. \nAdmission prices are Adults $8.00\, ages 7 to 17 years $3.00\, free for ages 6 and under. Tickets\nwill be sold on site the day of the event. Concessions will be available for purchase.
