DESCRIPTION:McKinney Center honors Veterans Day with Community Listening Day \nIn honor of Veterans Day\, The McKinney Center\, StoryTown Radio Show and the Jonesborough Senior Center will host a “Listening Day” on Thursday\, November 9. Area veterans are invited to the Jonesborough Senior Center\, located at 307 East Main Street\, to connect with fellow veterans by sharing stories from their time of service. \nListening Day will begin at 10 a.m. with a story circle\, a time for veterans to share and listen to each other’s stories in a group setting. Please call the McKinney Center or sign up at the Jonesborough Senior Center to reserve a place in this session that will last until 11 a.m. \nThe Listening Day will continue with individual interviews from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. These do not require a reservation. \nFor more information or to reserve a spot for the Veterans Day Listening Day\, call the McKinney Center at 423.753.0562. \nThese stories will be recorded and archived on behalf of The Story Initiative in Jonesborough. The recordings may be used as source material for StoryTown programming\, including the StoryTown Radio Show. This one-hour live performance\, presented as an old-time radio show\, celebrates the culture of East Tennessee by featuring true stories from the area and a local music guest. The show can be enjoyed at the live performance\, on WETS 89.5 and on the StoryTown Radio Show podcast. \nThe Story Initiative values everyone’s stories. It aims to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds to strengthen community through shared stories. SUMMARY:Sycamore Shoals State Park\, Autumn Heritage Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is in full swing. As both the temperature and the leaves continue to fall\, we begin to\nthink of the many holiday festivities that wait in the coming days. Over two hundred years ago it\nwas quite the same for the early frontier settlers. On Saturday\, November 11 from 10:00 to 4:00\nand Sunday\, November 12 from 10:00 to 3:00 Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area will become\nthe scene of a Frontier Harvest Celebration as we enjoy a time of friendship\, thanksgiving\, and\nrecognition of our patriot ancestors.\nIn Colonial America\, before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday\, each colony or\ncommunity observed days of thanksgiving usually after the harvest had been brought in or after a\nsignificant military victory. Join the Washington County Militia\, host living history organization\nat Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park\, for their monthly militia muster and a colonial “Harvest\nHome” as they celebrate the Overmountain Men’s victory at the battle of Kings Mountain!\nActivities throughout the weekend will include programs and demonstrations of 18th century\nfrontier life including open hearth cooking\, flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, natural\ndyeing\, music\, Revolutionary War era battle tactics\, and much more. The weekend will also\ninclude a special Veterans Day program on Saturday\, November 11th to honor the combatants at\nthe Battle of Kings Mountain and our current veterans and armed service members.\nAlso\, join members of the Overmountain Weavers Guild as they present the Fall Fibers Fair\ninside the park visitors center throughout the weekend. Visit with local spinners\, weavers\, and\nfiber artists to learn more about wool\, flax\, and other fiber arts. Also do some early Christmas\nshopping with fiber arts vendors who will be set up throughout the weekend as well.\nThis is a perfect opportunity for the entire family to visit one of Tennessee’s finest state parks\nand enjoy a day immersed in history and fun. The Sabine Hill Social Society will present English\ncountry dancing demonstrations. DESCRIPTION:How the Grinch Stole Christmas at the Chester Inn Museum \n  \nJoin the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on Saturday\, November 25 for readings of the holiday classic\, Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! This program is part of the town of Jonesborough’s “Whoville” holiday celebration which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nThis program will feature a reading of the “Grinch” in the restored parlor room as well as a display of holiday items from our archival collection. The Chester Inn will also talk about the history of Victorian holiday celebration customs and the practice of storytelling during the holidays. Each program will be approximately 15-20 minutes. \n  \nThis year there will be readings at noon\, 1:15\, 2 and 2:45 p.m. Due to spacing issues\, the attendance of each program will be for the first 20 people. Attendees can pick up their tickets at the Chester Inn Museum on November 25.
