SUMMARY:Storytown Radio Show: Fair Play
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Alliance Takes on the Airways For February Production \nAnne G’Fellers-Mason\, Director of the Heritage Alliance\, is no stranger to the StoryTown Radio Show. She has played an active role on the popular monthly production for six years. But Mason will take the helm for the February 24 production\, “Fair Play\,” which will be presented at 7:00 PM at the International Storytelling Center. \n\nJules Corriere\, writer and director of the StoryTown Radio Show\, asked her good friend and colleague Anne G’Fellers-Mason to write this episode\, so Corriere could focus on the upcoming community play\, Life Lines\, which will perform its opening night later in the week. The two playwrights have collaborated often through the years\, and Corriere felt that Mason was the perfect choice. \n\nJoining the cast for this performance will be the popular singing group\, “We Five\,” specializing in Gospel music. This group has performed with the Yarn Exchange several times through the years\, and was the very first music guest on the radio show. The music group’s story\, consequently\, is featured in this year’s Life Lines community play\, as well. \n\nTickets for StoryTown Radio show are $5 and may be purchased at the Visitors Center\, or by calling 423-753-1010 or online at Jonesborough.com/tickets. \n\nLife Lines tickets are also available at the same number. Both projects are sponsored in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Jonesborough Storytown: Life Lines
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center’s StoryTown program will bring to life a brand-new play this February and March as Life Lines is set to open its world premiere. Written by Jules Corriere\, this play is based on more than a thousand pages of oral story transcripts collected from area residents. Real-life characters and moments in local history take the stage as this moving play explores a common question: How to keep a community (or a family\, or a life) together\, as outside forces and influences work to pull them apart. \nAn important storyline in the play revolves around the story of Old Butler\, which was flooded in 1948 by the TVA in order to create Lake Watauga. A dozen members from the Old Butler Community were interviewed for these scenes\, including Joyce Dean Garrison\, Ella Mae Wiggins\, Billy Milhorn\, and Herman Tester. The Butler community\, which began in the late 1700’s\, was systematically dismantled over the course of one year\, with houses being moved on trailers to new locations\, including Johnson City\, Elizabethton\, Telford and beyond. Homes were saved\, but the geographical community was not. However\, residents decided to keep the community of heart together\, and continue to hold annual reunions to this day. Butler descendants Kate Pierce and Beverly Harrison are actors in the production. \nThe play is filled with true-life characters who have overcome floods and fires\, including new Jonesborough residents Angie and Ivan Millan\, who located to Jonesborough after the devastating Hurricane Maria and the floods in Puerto Rico. Importantly\, the scenes in the play illustrate how different facets of community and family come together to serve as “Life Lines” to each other during times of trouble. \nA sign interpreter will be available for one performance on February 29th at 2:00 p.m. for the hearing impaired. \nTickets for Life Lines are $12 general admission\, $10 senior/student. The play opens February 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the McKinney Center in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. It will also be performed on February 29 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m.\, March 1 at 2:00 p.m.\, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.\, March 7 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. and March 8 at 2:00 p.m. For tickets\, call the Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423.753.1010 or purchase online at jonesborough.com/lifelines. \nThis play is sponsored in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Heritage Alliance: Virtual Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Alliance will host its first Virtual Fieldtrip Day on Monday\, May 18. Throughout the day\, the Alliance will offer tours and activities online for students learning from home. The day will include a look at their one room schoolhouse Oak Hill School\, an interactive tour of Main Street Jonesborough\, a tour of the third-floor bedroom of the Chester Inn Museum\, an interactive artifact exploration\, and much more. The Heritage Alliance will be streaming and posting content for students from 10:00 a.m. that morning to 2:00 p.m. that afternoon. \n\n“Normally we welcome students in person to our historic sites\, but it’s not safe right now to have a large group exploring together\, so we wanted to offer an alternative for students who are learning from home\,” Executive Director Anne Mason explains. “We also wanted to offer this experience to students who were supposed to come with their schools this spring and weren’t able to. This is a way for students\, parents\, and educators to engage with local history. Hopefully this will encourage them to visit the physical sites in the future when it’s safer to do so.” The tours and activities on May 18 will be streamed from and posted to the Heritage Alliance’s Facebook page\, as well as the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum’s Facebook page. In the coming week\, the Heritage Alliance will post a packet to their website that outlines what students and educators can expect to see and do on May 18. \n\n“We’ve been posting a lot of educational activities to our website\, including explorations of historic photos from our collection\, and a primary source activity with the cholera epidemic of 1873. Our Virtual Field Trip Day is a new\, educational activity for us\, and we’re really excited to share the historic buildings with the students\,” Mason adds. “We encourage students to log on with their families and ask questions. We want this to be as interactive as possible.” \n\nThe day will also include visits to the Christopher Taylor House\, the Chuckey Depot Museum\, and the Old Jonesborough Cemetery\, with some surprises thrown in. To help cover expenses\, the Heritage Alliance suggests a donation of $5.00-$7.00\, which covers the normal fee for a student during a fieldtrip. Donations can be made online at www.heritageall.org. \n\nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences.  For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information can also be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/.

SUMMARY:Storytown Radio: Not All That I Carry
DESCRIPTION:StoryTown Radio Show to Broadcast Production Honoring Veterans \nThis month\, the StoryTown Radio Show honors Memorial Day with a special broadcast as the cast performs a radio-play version of Jules Corriere’s one-act play “Not All That I Carry”. First performed as a stage show at the Jonesborough Senior Center. The play is based on stories from members of the Jonesborough Senior Center\, especially centering around the subject of World War I\, World War II\, and the Great Depression. \nSenior Center members who contributed stories for this production include World War II Medic Vern Dauerty; Veterans Bob Powers\, John White and Joe Allison\, Larry and Irene Richmond; Pam and Doc Johnson; Owen Colvin; Maggie Polden; Kathleen Dunworth; Shirley Rowan Meade\, and Harvey and Madge Crain. \nTheir time of sacrifice will feel familiar right now. During this time\, when homes are turned into offices\, schools\, and gyms\, we are facing a world much different than just a few months ago\, and the change was sudden. Just like the stories in this play\, each of us is\, in our own ways\, in the midst of making sacrifices. \n“That’s why I think this play will touch audiences today\,” Corriere explains\, “In my years of collecting stories\, I’ve heard tales of sacrifice\, in which people literally lived in a different world- across an ocean\, in a country with a different language\, and different environments. They are so inspiring. We can draw strength from these stories\, because they do offer hope. They made it through difficult times- and that lets me know I’ll make it through\, too. Because I come from them.” \nThe people in “Not All That I Carry” were called the Greatest Generation. They did what was asked of them\, and lived through very difficult times. We are all now living in historic and difficult times\, too. How we are dealing with these times here in Jonesborough has been heartening. \n“We’re reaching out to each other\, not physically\, but virtually. We’re supporting our local businesses at curbside pick-ups. Our educators have\, in a moment’s notice\, created engaging online learning opportunities for our children. We’re providing food to those in need through school lunch pick-up and at the food pantry. We’re doing great things\, even if in small ways. But each of our small sacrifices help to uplift us all.” Corriere says\, and finishes with a thoughtful question: \n“What will our generation be called\, after this global pandemic is over? Our actions will define that. In Jonesborough and Washington County\, I’d like to think we’ll be known as the Caring Generation.” \nThe program will air on WETS 89.5 FM and stream online on wets.org on their HD Channel One at 8 p.m. on Wednesday\, May 27. The cast has not yet resumed their usual live audience performances. The program will also become available on the StoryTown Podcast channel beginning Friday\, May 29. StoryTown is available on all major podcast platforms\, including Apple\, Spotify\, and iHeart\, as well as online at storytown.simplcast.com \nThis will be the eighth episode of the StoryTown Podcast Series. StoryTown is sponsored in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission\, The Wild Women of Jonesborough\, Main Street Café and Catering\, and Nancy Hope and Odie Major.

SUMMARY:McKinney Center Fall Open House
DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center Announces Fall Art Classes \nThe McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts has announced their fall schedule of classes of experiential learning opportunities for both children and adults with some minor safety adjustments.  Registration is now underway for all upcoming classes.  All classes and policies can be found at mckinneycenter.com. \n\nDirector Theresa Hammons states\, “The pandemic took everyone by surprise this past spring and it was heartbreaking to have to cancel classes for several different reasons.”  The McKinney Center offered spring students options to take a full refund\, take a class credit\, or donate their registration fee.  “We felt that was the right thing to do\,” stated Hammons\, “people were in different situations and we felt it was only right to give people a refund for the classes that they could not take.  There were also a good number of students who donated their registration fee and we are so grateful!  Those donations along with those who donated their Art in the Park Vendor fees and their Masterpiece Mingle ticket fees helped us tremendously.”  Although the Center has been closed for most of the summer\, the staff and faculty are looking forward to starting fresh come August\, beginning with their Fall Open House on August 15\, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \n\nThe Fall Open House will give visitors a look into what classes will be offered this semester.  Visitors can socially distance while viewing class information and displays.  The McKinney Center faculty will be present for any questions potential students may have about their classes. “The Open House is a good time to meet your instructor and to really see what you will get out of taking a class here at the McKinney Center\,” states Hammons. \n\nArt\, music\, drama\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this fall for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop understanding and experiment with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and processes.  For older elementary aged students\, courses are taught to build their skills as artist\, including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level.  Classes in drama\, film\, music\, and dance are also available for this age range to include Art Adventures\, Creative Construction\, Homeschool Art\, Kids N Clay\, Young Potters\, Let’s Make a TV Show\, Anime\, Mosaics\, Ballet\, Tap\, Jazz\, Pottery\, and Guitar. \n\nOfferings for older students and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music\, and various workshops.  Director There Hammons states\, “There is something for everyone here at the McKinney Center.  Most of our classes are for beginners.  While our classes have always been small in size\, we are taking it a step further this semester and limiting the maximum number of students in our classes to 8-9 students.  For our dance classes that take place in the auditorium\, the maximum number of students will be no more than 15. So\, if you are more or less skilled\, the instructor has time to work with you one on one.” \n\nThe McKinney Center had to change their schedule of classes a bit this semester\, giving 30 minutes between classes to provide ample time for students\, faculty\, and staff to clean up and disinfect before the next class.  To do this\, a few classes had to be eliminated from the schedule\, but were replaced with more one-day workshops.  Several new workshops will be offered including mosaics\, Zentangle\, glass fusion\, pottery decorating\, soap making\, crocheting\, and even hydroponics!  The McKinney Center has also developed a few online only classes for those who prefer to take a class at home. \n\nOther changes will include supply kits for individual students rather than using shared supplies\, breaks in classes to wash hands\, continuing a strict regimen of disinfecting and cleaning the building\, and providing video options for students who miss a class due to feeling ill.  To read the McKinney Center’s complete list of policies and procedures please go to mckinneycenter.com. \n\nSave money and register early. Early registration secures a spot in class as well as a $10 discount through August 15. Individual class costs vary. The Fall Open House will be held at the McKinney Center on August 15\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be an opportunity for the public to see what the spring classes have to offer. Faculty will be present for questions and demonstrations.  The last day to register for classes is August 21\, 5 p.m. \n\nThe McKinney Center is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Staff members encourage all visitors to be at home at the McKinney Center; take a class\, participate in an exhibition\, come to a lecture\, volunteer your time\, attend a workshop\, or set up an easel on the grounds and paint.  Please check the McKinney Center Facebook page throughout the year for information about our exciting programs and events. \n\nFull descriptions of class offerings can be found online at www.mckinneycenter.com or by stopping by the McKinney Center\, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, to pick up a catalog.  For additional information contact McKinney Center Director\, Theresa Hammons at theresah@jonesboroughtn.org or call 423.753.0562.

SUMMARY:MOONLITE DRIVE-IN THEATRE Disney's Mary Poppins
DESCRIPTION:Based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time and the Broadway musical that played for over 2\,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Awards nominations\, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect Broadway musical at the Moonlite Drive-In! \nThe jack-of-all trades\, Bert\, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense\, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures\, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” \nDisney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

SUMMARY:Long Journey Home
DESCRIPTION:Just about as far northeast in Tennessee as you can get\, you’ll find a place where folks still get together and play Old Time music on their front porches. Every year a celebration takes place honoring the iconic Old Time mountain music style that shaped country music as we know it. \nThis year’s Long Journey Home festival on September 4th and 5th might look a little different\, but even a global pandemic can’t stop the celebration. The anticipated events will be enjoyed virtually: \n· An exclusive one-time community preview of the new film Short Life of Trouble: The Legend of G.B. Grayson\, will be shown Friday\, September 4th at 8pm \n· The largest mural yet A Day in the Life of a Song will be unveiled in Downtown Mountain City- Saturday\, September 5th \n· Authentic Old Time music from heritage music sites throughout Johnson County- September 5th \n· An exclusive guided virtual tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile in Downtown Mountain City- September 5th \n· An online visit with best-selling Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb-September 5th \nAll events will be presented online at www.longjourneyhome.net and on the Long Journey Home Facebook page. \nThe excitement begins on Friday\, September 4th with an exclusive one time online community preview of Short Life of Trouble: The Legend of G.B. Grayson. This film tells the long overdue story of the blind mountain fiddler G.B. Grayson\, whose short career produced The Ballad of Tom Dooley\, Train 45\, Handsome Molly\, and about 40 other songs that became the standards of Bluegrass and early country music. The film was created by Appalachian Memory Keepers in partnership with Johnson County Center for the Arts and funded by Tennessee Arts Commission. \nOn Saturday\, September 5th\, the Musical Heritage Homecoming Tour goes live at 11:30. First\, you can watch the unveiling of A Day in the Life of a Song\, the newest addition to downtown Mountain City’s Musical Heritage Mural Mile. Artists Cristy Dunn\, Temple Reece\, and Lewis Chapman created scenes that celebrate music as a part of everyday life\, from singing while making biscuits to ‘Lassy Making and Sawmillin’ and ending with a family gathered around an old fashioned radio listening to The Grand Ole Opry. \nThe Kody Norris Show will entertain with the songs of G.B. Grayson at noon\, and then two more virtual sites will celebrate the music of Clarence “Tom” Ashley\, Clint Howard and Fred Price with video segments ‘Sawmillin and ‘Lassy Makin’ and My Home in the Mountains. \nAfterwards\, viewers are invited to go for a guided tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile. This virtual tour through beautiful downtown Mountain City will give you an in-depth look into the inspiration behind the musical heritage murals. \nFinally\, acclaimed Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb will join us for an online talk and share her insight into ballads and murders in Johnson County. Wherever you are this year\, you can tune in and share in the sites and sounds that make Johnson County such a special place at www.longjourneyhome.net. \n  \n“It’s about as real as it gets. If you were wondering whether authentic Appalachia still exists\, look no further.” -Evelyn Cook \nFor more information\, please contact Cristy Dunn at 423-957-6346 or Evelyn Cook at 423-727-8700 \ncdunnoriginals@hotmail.com \nor go to www.longjourneyhome.net

SUMMARY:Free Drive-In Movie September 19
DESCRIPTION:Unicoi\, Tenn. —  The Town of Unicoi will host a free drive-in movie at its Tourist Information Center Saturday\, September 19\, at 8 p.m. at 106 Unicoi Village Place. Sound will be played through FM radio and concessions will be available. \n“We’ve never tried a drive-in movie before\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “But COVID has changed a lot of things this year and we’re just happy we’ve found a way to give the community something to do that’s relatively low risk.” \nThe recently relocated Clinchfield Caboose CRR111 will support the screen\, with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot\, and the feature will be a family-friendly Disney movie. A map of the setup may be viewed on the town’s website in addition to the announcement of which Disney movie will be showing. The newly finished Buffalo Pavilion will house the concession stand and food-handling precautions will be taken\, including masks and gloves and one person to handle money while another handles the food in an effort to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 exposure. \n“This is exactly what we want to see at the Village Place Complex\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “The pavilion\, visitor center\, kitchen and future amphitheater … just all of it working together to create a space that’s multifunctional and really useful to the residents and visitors.” \nConcessions will open at 7 p.m.\, including Little Caesars Pizza for $1 per slice or $6 for a whole pie (paper plates provided for less mess in vehicles). The movie will start at dark and guests are asked to remain in their vehicles except for restrooms and concessions\, and only one person from each car is allowed in the concession line.  Masks are required if out of the vehicle and guests are asked to please practice socially distancing. \nSpecial thanks to drive-in movie sponsors Unicoi Walmart\, Single Dad Homesteading and Erwin Record for their generosity and contribution to local community events. \nFor more information or for the name of the movie showing\, visit the Town of Unicoi’s Facebook page at facebook.com/townofunicoitn.
