DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. SUMMARY:Carter County Omnium
DESCRIPTION:The Carter County Omnium (May31 and June 1) is able to provide the challenging race courses as previous years with some Helene caused necessary changes. The Carter County Roan Groan will register in back of the County Court House and start from in front of Food City. The distances will be the same 30\, 55 and 80 miles and 4040\, 7020\, and 9747 feet of climbing depending the different level of ability and experience of the racers. \n\nThe Temple Time Trial will be the same as previously but the exit 40 off I-26 will require going back through Erwin to get back on I-26 heading west after the Time Trial. The detour signs are easy to follow. Though the road didn’t suffer damage\, the damage to the area is very visible to the competitors. \n\nThe Eastman Credit Union Criterium had to be completely move to a new location from Downtown Elizabethton.  The Closure of the Broad St Bridge prevents the closure of Elk Ave for the Downtown races. The races will be at Tennessee College of Applied Technology on Hwy 91 in Stoney Creek. This new course will be more challenging with six turns instead of four. \n\nRegistration closes Wednesday night with current registration from 16 states including racers from New Mexico to Utah and Florida to Pennsylvania. In the Women’s Pro 1\,2\,3 field Jennifer Thornton-Brooks the 2024 winner and Florence Howden the 2023 winner have joined the same team United Cycling p.b. Cadence Cyclery and with an additional team mate Catie George will be a formidable power to have a winner this year. \n\nIn the men’s Pro 1\,2 field team White Space Bikes has three entered. Their leader will be Devin Hatch who has already won both a road race and a criterium this year. \n\nBring a chair and watch the Sunday races where you will be only a few feet away form the racers. There will be a mix of current National Champions and under 23 racers looking to move into the professional teams. Also ran racer in 2021 and 2022 at the Carter County Omnium\, Artem Schmidt\, is now racing for Ineos Grenadier in Europe at 21 years old. Last week Schmidt\, as the 2024 National Pro Time Trial Champion won again at the 2025 Time Trial Championship.
