DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EXHIBIT: REAL FOLK\nMAR 6 – 12:00AM TO AUG 30 – 11:59PM\nREAL FOLK: PASSING ON TRADES & TRADITIONS THROUGH THE VIRGINIA FOLKLIFE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM EXTENDED THROUGH AUGUST!\nVIRTUAL TOUR & ACTIVITIES \nSince 2002\, the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program at Virginia Humanities has brought together over 150 experienced master artists and eager apprentices\, ensuring various art forms are passed on in ways that are conscious of history and faithful to tradition. All forms of Virginia’s expressive culture – from the Appalachian hills and the Chesapeake shore to new immigrant traditions brought to the state – are represented\, including letterpress printing\, mandolin making\, African-American gospel singing\, quilting\, old-time banjo playing\, Mexican folk dancing\, classical Iranian and Persian music\, broom making\, and more. The master artists comprise some of Virginia’s most celebrated practitioners of folk traditions both old and new to Virginia\, and the apprentices learn their chosen craft not in classrooms or lecture halls\, but in their traditional contexts\, such as local dance halls\, churches\, woodshops\, stables\, and garages – making the passing on of these crafts even more meaningful. \nReal Folk: Passing on Trades & Traditions through the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program gives viewers an inside look at these traditions and the people who are keeping them alive\, helping to ensure that Virginia’s treasured folkways remain in good keeping for years to come. \nThis exhibit\, on display at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum March 6—August 30\, 2020\, was produced through a partnership between the museum and the Virginia Folklife Program. \nA variety of complementary programs will be offered to go along with Real Folk; keep an eye on our events page to learn more.

This two-hour workshop will allow students to learn a new dance and about the culture from which it was born. This will be a general African Dance class that encompasses many different styles. Be sure to wear clothes that allow freedom of motion as you join us for this educational\, fun\, and active dance workshop\, with a focus on rhythm and movement that will have everyone moving together! This workshop is free and open to all ages. \n\nThe workshop will be led by area expert\, Doris Owah. Owah is a student at ETSU and works with the ETSU group “Shades of Africa” and is Ms. Shades 2019. \n\n“Shades of Africa” is a student organization that is “interested in uniting African students and non-African students by facilitating interaction through activities and events. We seek to create cultural awareness\, social and scholarly growth of African students. The organization promotes an understanding of the diverse African cultures that are present on ETSU’s campus. This belief system encourages the ability to commune and share diverse cultures\, resulting in strength\, growth\, and awareness\, breaking down stereotypes and fostering an atmosphere of understanding and mutual respect.” \n\nThis event is a part of a series through October\, to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Booker T. Washington School that served as the Black school from 1940 until integration. The professor of art in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Wilson will give an artist talk on Thursday\, April 2\, as well as work with ETSU students while on campus. Then following the storytelling concert Davis will host a meet and greet for fans. \n\nDavis’ resume boasts numerous experiences including Davidson College\, Duke University Divinity School\, a retired Methodist minister and former chairperson of the board of Directors for the National Storytelling Association.
